George Soros Made A Huge Bet That Stocks Will Fall

It seems legendary hedge fund billionaire George Soros might be souring in his view on the market outlook for U.S. stocks, based on his most recent 13-F filing in the U.S., which showed a 605% increase in his short S&P 500 position (through put options on 11.29 million shares of SPDR S&P 500 ETF) to $2.2 billion.
In a 13-F filing three months ago, Soros' fund had puts on 1.6 million shares, valued at $299.264 at the time.

Two months ago, Fed's Bullard went full hawktard and implicitly told bondholders to "sell, sell, sell." As we explained here, there was a hidden motive for his demands - the bond market was breaking bad. So, perhaps it is not a total surprise that on the week when Treasury "fails to deliver" break back above $1bn to 2-month highs (broken market), that Jim Bullard is back:

*BULLARD SAYS MARKET TRADING 'TOO DOVISHLY' COMPARED TO FOMC, TIPS REAL RATE `SHOCKINGLY LOW'
*BULLARD SAYS HE SEES FIRST RATE RISE AT END OF 1Q 2015

stocks and bonds have massively diverged (just as they did last time Bullard spoke)

Wall St. falls but still on track for positive week

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Friday, reversing earlier gains as forces in Ukraine engaged a Russian armored column on Ukrainian soil, raising the prospect of a deeper escalation in the region's unrest.

Markets had opened higher as investors continued to bet that the tension between Ukraine and Russia was waning. However, a Ukrainian military spokesman said Ukrainian forces had tracked a Russian armored column after it crossed the border into Ukraine, and that after the engagement "part of it no longer exists." Shares turned lower in heavy volume.

Investors have been concerned about the potential fallout from any escalation between the two countries, though recent signs of easing tensions had lifted equities this week.

Current Market Conditions:
Europe markets were slammed late in their day by word that Ukraine forces had engaged a Russian convoy on Ukraine territory. As a result the markets are going into the weekend in a RISK-OFF posture. The EURUSD is just below 1.3400.

  • Yields in prime Eurozone fixed income markets are sharply lower on the developments in Ukraine. The 10-yr bund is 0.96% -6 bp. The 10-yr 1.00% line remains an obvious market benchmark. Peripheral bond yields are lower.
  • The U.K.10-yr gilt  yield is 2.34%  -9bp. The +25bp BOE rate hike has been pushed a quarter later to 1Q15.
  • U.S.10-yr yield is 2.32%, -9bp. The psychological pivot has become  2.40%?
  • Far East equities closed higher. Bourses in Europe are up. U.S. share futures are up.

The heat map color scheme of interest rates reflects yields. This aligns all the colors in the chart to reflect risk-on (green) and risk-off(red).

GBP/USD - .... Although Britons are finding EU goods & services cheaper this month as compared to a year ago when they take their vacation in Europe in this holiday Aug month after eur/gbp cross slid to a near 2-year low of 0.7874 in Jul, the flip side of this is the widening of Britain's trade gap esp vs the EU.

The U.K. Telegraph reported why the eurozone's woes could hurt Britain. Growth in EU ground to a halt in the 2nd quarter of the year. This was mostly due to weaker-than-expected figures from the eurozone's economic heavyweights.
Germany's economy shrank by 0.2% in the quarter, while France's flatlined. At the same time, the bloc is on the cusp of a deflationary spiral.
Prices are falling in Portugal, Greece n Spain, while Italy isn't far behind.

Because the EU is still Britain's single biggest overseas market, so an economic standstill in the eurozone will hit UK exports hard.
MPC member David Miles summed it up on Thur when he said British exports to the EU are "dead in the water".

Britain's overseas investments are also concentrated in the EU, so poor performing EU firms will hit the UK's return on foreign investment hard, too. Both of these factors mean further pain for the U.K.?s current account deficit, which already stands near a record high at 4.4% of GDP.

Why Isn't the EURUSD at 1.30?

In an attempt to open discussion I have posed the question "Define Trend" twice but without anyone wanting to respond so in a further attempt to perhaps widen the discussion a bit further I would offer the following:

approx. (depends on exactly how you count) 93 weeks higher from 1.2042 July 2012 to 1.3993 May 2014 and here we are in the 14th week where the low from Nov 2013 at 1.3294 has not been challenged.
In other words we have had a 15% time pullback with a 32% price pullback. What this amounts to is the price is ahead of time

We are currently an inside week sitting mid-point roughly between 2 minor fibs (38% and 23%) ...Yes for the last 14 weeks there has been a knee-jerk followed by consolidation followed by a knee-jerk followed by the current consolidation move but we are still in a well defined range rather than a trend as particularly evidenced by the EurXxx which for approx. 6 weeks have gone absolutely nowhere.

There is a perfect storm yet the trend is frustratingly slow. See why in my latest article.

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.
