The Neverending Search for Forex Equilibrium

Do you ever wonder why you turn on your screens and it is often hard to figure out which way the forex market will move as it appears to be in balance? Have you ever thought about why currencies settle into tight ranges with interest on both sides before making the next move? Have you noticed how a currency gets stuck in a tight range in one center and needs to see another center open up to break from that range? Well I have and can tell you the reason why.

U.S. New Homes Sales for July fell short of street expectations. The ISM flash Service PMI weakened in August as well. Monday was a holiday for London.

According to a musing in the Economist : "Deflation would be particularly grave for the euro area because both private and public debt is so high in many of the 18 countries that share the single currency. Even if inflation is positive but stays low it hurts debtors, as their incomes rise more slowly than they expected when they borrowed. If deflation were to set in, the effects would be worse still: when prices and wages fall, debts, which do not shrink, become harder to repay."

Bottom Line
Remember Ben Broadbent next time you hear a peddler of printing and "inflation" - like Kuroda or Draghi for example - claim that inflation will raise incomes, jobs growth and economic prosperity: wage earners are and will be first to suffer and if they will ever accrue a benefit for inflation, they will always be last to do so.

You can see the speculation about an ECB rate cut as early as next week in the decline in peripheral bond yields below. The surge in the DAX today stems from hopes for ECB ease. I heard a while ago that Nomura is predicting ECB ease in September or October. I don't see how waiting helps them?

Current Market Conditions:
Late Monday in Europe markets remain in a mixed risk posture. London markets were closed Monday for a Bank Holiday. Dovish comments by ECB President Draghi have been a weight on the EURUSD. It has been  pivoting the1.3200 line.

  • Yields in prime Eurozone fixed income markets have fallen after the dovish Draghi comments Friday. The 10-yr bund is 0.95% -3bp. The 10-yr 1.00% line remains an obvious market benchmark. Peripheral bond yields are sharply lower.
  • London Markets are closed. The U.K.10-yr gilt  yield is 2.56%  +4bp. I expect a +25bp BOE rate hike in February 2015, subject to future data.
  • U.S.10-yr yield is 2.40%, -2bp. The Yellen speech Friday disappointed the doves. The psychological pivot is 2.40%.
  • Far East equities closed mixed. Bourses in Europe are sharply higher. U.S. shares are up with the S&P testing above 1000.

Morning notes -

1. Yellen did not make the usual disclaimer of "not speaking for the Fed" - she consistently used "our" in describing past and future considerations - I doubt she has lost her bias towards labor weakness theory (i.e., slack)

2. Yellen said if "either" labor or inflation moved faster than anticipated the rate hike would be earlier and subsequently faster

3. Data dependent is about as vague a term as possible -- the correct interpretation of the data is the key -- the quantity of data is not as critical as the quality of the interpreter

4. Bunds seem to be calling the tune as money in sovereign market is willing to pay up for most sovereign credits - as the Prince of Citi remarked "we're still dancing" -- eventually somebody is going to have to pay this PIPER

Trader Alert: Beware of Forex Bucket Shops
Reply

I get asked a lot for suggestions about specific brokers and which broker to choose. Some brokers I never heard of and it got me to thinking about the different tiers of forex brokers. It also got me to thinking about the term forex “bucket shop.” This generally refers to a broker who “buckets” all or most of its trades and takes them on its own books without going to the market (it may pass through the trades of profitable traders only). In other words, it is betting on the statistics that most retail forex traders lose money and thus is willing to take the other side of most trades. The question is why should you care?

Using Pivot Points in Forex Trading: A Simple but Effective Trading System

Let's put it this way, I have been on record consistently as saying that EURUSD at a minimum will trade below 1.3000. I find the slow pace of the decline to be surprising.

I don't think this is a tradable move, meaning you run a risk of permanently being taken out if your position if you try to get in and out of your shorts.

As I said 1.3000 has been my initial target but I think there is considerably more room on the downside.

Draghi surprise means further EUR/USD downside Fed Chair Janet Yellen Friday showed what an experienced central banker she is as she made a speech that sounded profound without actually saying very much. (Former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan famously said, ”if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I said.”) Mostly she described the difficulties that she and her colleagues were having discerning what was going on with the labor market, because of structural changes that make previous indicators unreliable. The line that captured the market’s attention was when she confirmed the message from the July FOMC minutes: that the debate in the FOMC is no longer about whether to raise rates, but rather when to raise rates. “With the economy getting closer to our objectives, the [Committee’s] emphasis is naturally shifting to questions about the degree of remaining slack, how quickly that slack is likely to be taken up, and thereby to the question of under what conditions we should begin dialling back our extraordinary accommodation,” she said. Thus the die is cast in the US for further tightening.

with no headline data to hamper trading, its pure technicals and dollar side action for cable this week.
former 50% fib at 16537 commanded the markets attention and while abv there the risk is of a test of 16605, a past fib which has recently supported price action from both sides. interim support at 6662 keeps slight upside bias in play. a move through that 16605 fib brings the 10 day ma into play. aggresive players can short there with stops abv the 200 day at 82, another fib 16694 and also prev low. alternatively, risk missing the trade and wait for any break abv 10 day to reduce drawdown.
the dollar has gone a long way and some pullback cannot be rules out. fwiw cable has gone 7 weeks negative, i cannot find any historic evidence of a longer run. so some pullback may be due. and with it now being a bear market (more than 20% of 1.48/1.72), pullback can be short but v sharp.

The fact that price is trading below Fri's 1.3220 low suggests intra-day downside bias remains following a short-covering rebound to 1.3297 in Europe last Fri but bears returned in full force after Fed Chair Yellen's rather balanced speech in Jackson Hole.
Offers are tipped at 1.3220/30 n more abv n initial bias are noted at 1.3185-80, suggesting selling euro is the favoured strategy.

Forex Forum

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.

FX Trading

Global-View also offers a full fx trading chart gallery that includes fx pairs, such as the EURUSD, commodities, stocks and bonds. In a fx trading world where markets are integrated, the chart gallery is a valuable trading tool. Look for updates on the Forex Forum when the chart gallery is updated.

Forex Blog

Global-View.com also offers a forex blog, where articles of interest for currency trading are posted throughout the day. The forex blog articles come from outside sources, including forex brokers research as well as from the professionals at Global-View.com. This forex blog includes the Daily Forex View, Market Chatter and technical forex blog updates. In additional to its real time forex forum, there are also Member Forums available for more in depth forex trading discussions.
