Returned yesterday from a fortnight in New Zealand. Used my Australian credit card whilst over there.
AUD/NZD over that time traded between 1.0360 and 1.0570.
Yesterday while purchasing duty free at Wellington airport was given the option to pay in AUD or NZD. AUD/NZD was below parity while interbank traded at 5 cents higher at that time.
Travelex which has a monopoly at Australian and NZ airports quoted a spread of 15 cents between bid and offer 1.05 to 0.90 on AUD/NZD.

yes it's truely the end of La Dolce Vita.

Ms. Ekberg had kept a low public profile in recent years. She did make an appearance in 2010 at a film festival in Rome, where a new restoration of “La Dolce Vita” was having its world premiere. In December 2011 it was reported that she was almost penniless, had no family to help her and was seeking financial assistance from the Fellini Foundation while living at a nursing home in Italy, her adopted country.

Skeptics are ridiculed as "naysayers," "permabears" or "doom-and-gloomers." As the bull market goes higher, many investors think that maybe it really is different this time. Maybe central banks have the power to keep markets levitated indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the bubble gets bigger and bigger, until complacent investors accept the bubble as the "new norm." Nowadays, uber-bulls believe this market is unstoppable, while some experts have made predictions of Dow 20,000 in 2015.

in any sense a drop in oil price should benefit the economy but that problem lies in artificial inflation of asset which combined with low int rates creates a mkt for debt. we saw the same in other commodities. when the banks move out the price falls. and of course packaging this debt and selling on at the highs (and then positioning short) is what has made the fall in oil not completely without a minus.

I believe I heard earlier that Jeffry Gundlach (sp?) said that ALL the job growth in the U.S. recently has been energy-related. He also said that energy investment has tumbled as oil prices have fallen. If this is true, I don't see how the FOMC can even think about tightening policy.

if its announced but light or sketchy on details then its certainly a good possibility Chris. after all fx mkt always prefers to travel than arrive. think we could do 11640 but finish the day higher. after qe there is no more that they can do while the us can only disappoint as far as rates are concerned - the only surprise can come on the downside for us rates ie. no way in world they can raise pre may/june, but theres a good chance that falling inflation knocks back rate increases til 2016. the big question here is will the fed see through short term dip in inflation as it saw through blip high some time ago. if so they raise mid year. if not and if its data dependant then its possible theres no increase til back of year year at earliest and quite possible early 2016 becomes the focal point. which of course means a bit of a repricing for dollar. no change in lt trend but a much needed correction.

14 January-- 10:00 GMT- Current Market Conditions
. Markets are in a broad  RISK OFF posture in the wake of the ongoing sell-off recently  in U.S. share  markets. Today, the European Court of Justice provided a non-binding ruling that provided the ECB with leeway to embark on additional QE as early as next week. The USD is up cs Europe while weakness in the Nikkei has seen funds repatriated to Japan and the JPY strengthen.  U.S. equities and bond yields are lower.

USD/JPY - ....... Dlr tumbles to a fresh 3-week low of 116.75 in heavy Asian trading.
Despite initial recovery from Tuesday's NY low of 117.53, renewed selling emerged at 117.96 (Aust.) and knocked price to lower 117.50 shortly after Tokyo open.
Renewed weakness in the Nikkei (N225 closed down nearly 300 points at 16795 - a near 3-week low) triggered broad-based yen buying on risk aversion n the pair remained under pressure throughout Asian session after tripping stops below 117.00.

The lack of a rebound ahead of European open suggests intra-day downward pressure remains and looks like any rebound in the dlr would be ltd in European session as more stops are touted below 116.25, then below 116.00.
Offers are tipped at 117.20/30 n more at 117.50/60, so selling dlr on recovery is the way to go.

Obama wants to attack Syria. Always did. Russia got in the way. Do they think that Europe will now 'support' the attack after the recent false flag in Paris? Obviously the creeps still need our consent for more war otherwise why would they bother? Russia and China will not consent though. The American war on the rest of the world is about to backfire in America. The U.S. is getting no new funding and the Japanese are taking back their cash.

USD/JPY - ...... The greenback remained under pressure in Asian morning due to the decline in Nikkei-225 index which fell by 138 points to 16950 following Tuesday's strong retreat in U.S. stock markets. U.S. dollar fell to an intra-day low at 117.50 in Tokyo morning before recovering briefly to 117.82.

Offers are now tipped at 117.80 and more at 118.00.
On the downside, mixture of bids and stops is located at 117.50 but buying interest is noted at 117.30-20.

In other news, Bloomberg reported that "the plunge in the price of oil makes it increasingly uncertain whether the Bank of Japan will reach its 2 percent inflation target in the coming fiscal year, according to people familiar with the central bank's discussions.
The BOJ is considering cutting its price forecast for the year that starts in April, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.
The BOJ is also mulling raising its growth outlook for the same period, the people said."

Wednesday will see the release of Japan's Machine Tool Orders, France's CPI, Italy's CI, euro zone industrial production, U.K.'s CB leading economic index, U.S.'s Exports, Imports, Retail Sales, Business Inventories and Fed's Beige Book.

The O has pretty much "trial ballooned" most of his State of the Union speech next week.

President Obama on Tuesday called on Congress to pass broad legislation to bolster cybersecurity across the United States government and private industry, working to capitalize on concern about recent high-profile computer breaches to counter an escalating threat.

Concern about cybersecurity has increased after the hacking of Sony in December, which the United States government says was the work of the North Korean government. The president said that breach and a Monday attack on the United States Central Command’s Twitter account proved the need for an overhaul.

“It just goes to show how much more work we need to do, both public and private sector, to strengthen our cybersecurity to make sure that families’ bank accounts are safe, to make sure that our public infrastructure is safe,”

In this forex trading tip I emphasize why the word HOPE has no place in a trader's dictionary. I have seen too many traders over the years lose discipline, replace sound analysis with hope that a trade would work out and wind up blowing their accounts. Winning traders do not reply on hope but sound risk and money management rules.

This 0bama thinggie to go after some jihadists raises a doubt thought that US was at war with 'terrorism' already..

I was just discussing with a colleague that suddenly there are a lot less Russia vilificating headlines on MSM. Iran is only exporting 1mil barrels of oil anyways... think Saudis are exporting at least 5 mil. so who is more vulnerable to the oil price drop? it would rather ironic that we see regime change from internal islamic dissidents in S.A. ... and then the crazy mf-ers shut off the oil flow and the world economy goes into panic mode as in.. the suadi royals sowed the seeds of their own demise with this power play.

but the game's stakes could be much bigger. In 2007, the $1 trillion subprime market lost 20% -- $220 billion - and was enough to take down the entire economy. Today, the energy market is five times as large. Similar losses in a collapsing oil market could total in excess of $1trillion - as Jim Rickards points out

seems this is being taken as an Act of Cooperation. Asking Congress, rather than claiming continued power that was given to Bush in the ought/oughts...12 years ago.

If you want to play it, I'd buy defense contractors, esp those who support troops, as this is probablly where it's heading, with Congressional approval...Boots on the Ground. After all look what "they" did in France. And there is Zero Hope that the $8bil spent training the Iraqii Army has produced anything capable of taking out ISIS...or so we are told.
