U.S Auto sales 18.19 mln annual rate in November. Fastest pace ever vs. 17.2 a year ago. One part of the economy is booming.

'cept it seemed the fibbed a bit, according to ZH. To whit.

Well this is a little awkward. After a day of exuberant unsubstantiated auto sales proclamations that a) it's not all subprime, b) 8-year credit terms do not pull forward demand, and c) it's totally sustainable; anyone could have been forgiven for being excited about the total vehicle sales of 18.12mm (according to Wards' data), just above expectations of 18.10mm and flat from October.

However, Wards reported just 14.03mm domestic vehicles sold (missing expectations by the most since June) and dropping for the 2nd month in a row. Those darned facts do get in the way eh?

..."Evans repeated his view that interest rates should be raised "very gradually," that it could well be appropriate for the Fed funds rate to still be under 1 percent by the end of next year, and continued to fret about a weak inflation outlook.

"I talk to a wide range of business contacts, and virtually none of them are mentioning rising inflationary or cost pressures. No one is planning for higher inflation. My contacts just don't expect it," he said." .../..

I wonder if that list of contacts is available for independent verification of Evans' assertion

Economic Data

When the data is all on a consistent trend then the trend is your friend - look to anecdotal evidence at turning points in various indicators (employment, mortgages, spending et al)

For example, Friday - ISM in OCT showed a weakening trend in employment but NFP showed a big jump - so today we have a rebound in NOV but the NFP may not exceed last month's figure - ISM measures direction but not magnitude

"The euro is too strong, and if it were 10% lower against the dollar we would increase our national wealth by 1.2%, create 120,000 jobs and reduce our deficit by 12 billion euros ($16.44 billion). If the euro went down by 20%, we would create 300,000 jobs and reduce our deficit by one-third," said French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg.

John - in Australia the market is waiting for the RBA to ease (recession dead ahead, falling commodity prices and general poor economic outlook). Mortgage rates in Australia however have already been RAISED by the major banks. The name of the game is funding and the cost of funding (which Australian banks do to the tune of 40% of their books in overseas market) has risen. Banks have increased borrowing rates (which count) while the RBA does nothing with the official cash rate. So who's in control here? Central Banks have lost credibility and, quite frankly, relevance and control. Funny old world.

What's more I am totally bored to death with this FED chatter. So is that it? Is it over before it even begun? Or do we have to wait another two weeks before we get on with things?

The FED: To Hike or Not to Hike

ib- good question. We have been discussing it over here. I think we agree that the Fed is committed to hiking rates unless we get a disastrous number on Friday. I don't know what a number like that would look like, but some say an increase in jobs of under 100K might be it. I'm thinking it would also take weak internals such as hourly earnings etc.

The new theology of Central Bankers now seems to be that ZIRP itself can cause low growth, so they want to raise rates ASAP.

PREVIEW: Reserve Bank of Australia Decision at 03:30 GMT Tuesday

At its meeting today, the Board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 2.0 per cent...

At today's meeting the Board again judged that the prospects for an improvement in economic conditions had firmed a little over recent months and that leaving the cash rate unchanged was appropriate. Members also observed that the outlook for inflation may afford scope for further easing of policy, should that be appropriate to lend support to demand. The Board will continue to assess the outlook, and hence whether the current stance of policy will most effectively foster sustainable growth and inflation consistent with the target.

As posted on GVI Forex

EURUSD broke its daily trendline today (1.0574) but may be more of the slow pace down than a reversal but is worth noting.

You can also use the 200 hour mva (currently 1.0630) on a closing hourly bar as an indicator to watch along with 1.0641.

On the downside, 1.0584 (Monday repeated resistance) needs to hold keep the retracement bid.

This is another case of the fx market rarely moving in a straight line but price action will raise talk of ECB being priced in or some hedging in case it does not go all in with its easing.

USD/JPY - 122.87
Despite yesterday's cross-inspired break of 122.94 res to 123.34 in New York, intra-day sharp retreat to 122.64 due to broad-based long liquidation is the usd in Asian morning suggests further 'choppy' trading below Nov's 12-week peak at 123.77 would continue with near term downside bias, only below 122.21/26 sup would bring stronger retracement of early upmove to 122.00/01.

On the upside, above 123.34 is needed to revive previous bullish scenario on dollar for subsequent re-test of 123.77.

If possible at least every day a live trade.

Yesterday it was usd/jpy. First entry was about 17 pips off, the last only 4-5. The reason i shorted cause it was late for real moves and no GN.
Got a few pips, and doing this every day makes a nice living. Not the only trades i do. Keep in mind ozmond and kiwi, and mostly e/u on wrinkles.

Today i will focus on OZMOND shorts on an another account. I have 5 accounts and i can trade multiple pairs.

EUR/USD - 1.0568
Yesterday's marginal weakness below last Wednesday's 7-month trough of 1.0565 to 1.0558 in New York suggests euro's medium-term downtrend would resume after consolidation and reckon 1.0595/05 res area would hold and yield one more fall.
However, near term loss of momentum should keep price above daily sup at 1.0521 today and bring a long-overdue correction later.

On the upside, a daily close above 1.0605 would be the 1st signal temporary low is in place, then euro would move higher to 1.0638/42 but last week's high at 1.0689 (Wed) should cap upside.

Don't expect miracles from gold.
Reply

It may rise into the [1140,1145] range, but I doubt if more.

Contrary to the last time I warned here of market crooks trying to victimize new traders, gold will behave now as a currency, supported by weakening USD.

I pointed last Friday to a "take or break" point for gold, and indeed a bottom was formed(I am not like the ONE anointed who can definitely know the next level).
Euro is a heavy ship, and will take time to turn it back.

One has to know that gold too, as a commodity has no demand(people have no money), but if there will be any big financial institution collapse, one may consider matters again.

USD/JPY - ..... Dlr finally pares intra-day losses ahead of Tokyo lunch session after tanking from 123.28 to 122.64 despite yesterday's cross-inspired rally from 122.69 (Asia) to as high as 123.34 in NY. Traders citing broad-based long usd liquidation as the main reason for the intra-day steep fall.

As dlr has remained under pressure despite intra-day gains in the Nikkei, suggesting near term upmove from last week's low at 122.26 has made a top yesterday at 123.34 and choppy sideways swings are likely to continue and if the greenback continues to weaken versus its major peers, then the pair may ratchet lower in European trading.
Offers are noted at and 122.90/00 and more above with stops reported above 123.35.
Some bids are touted at 122.60-50 and more below with fairly large stops building below 122.20.
