U.S. car sales hit record high in 2015

Drivers in the United States bought more cars last year than ever before, a staggering turnaround for an auto industry fighting for its life half a decade ago, as low gas prices and a strengthening economy marked a banner year on American roads.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/us-car-sales-hit-record-high-in-2015/2016/01/05/363aaf30-af14-11e5-b820-eea4d64be2a1_story.html

US Auto Sales Plunge To 6-Month Lows - Biggest Miss Since Nov 2008

Despite the blustering propaganda from CNBC's Phil LeBeau, it appears the Auto-sales (and massive inventory build) party is over in America. December US domestic auto sales SAAR printed 13.46 mm - the lowest in 6 months (missing expectations of 14.15mm by the most since November 2008). With non-revolving credit growth slowing in December, and inventories at record highs, the wheels just fell off the credit-fueled auto 'recovery'.

Which should not be a big surprise since we just suffered the lowest level of "plans to buy an auto" since January 2013:

Stanley : Four Rate Hikes in 2016 ‘in the Ballpark’

Regarding China, Fischer said "there are levels of uncertainty and they’ve risen a bit now," while downplaying the direct effect on the U.S. economy. “If all China’s neighbors and other large parts of the world are negatively affected to a considerable extent by China, then that would be an impact,” he said. “The rest of the world matters to us. If it was only China it would still matter, but a good deal less.”

Fed Losing Touch With Reality?

John - folks start to believe "one and done" -- the Summers and Krugman followers will be ecstatic // if the Fed believes that its rate hike was the cause of this correction it may panic but correlation is not cause -- extremely stupid to think that 1/4 point tipped the Business Cycle (money supply has been growing sub 2% for months)

The Fed is now focused on inflation - employment is a minor concern -- But the Minutes for Dec may have gone through a major re-write overnight

Fed Losing Touch With Reality?

If the US economy is turning weaker than expected, will the Fed have to reconsider its policy tightening path? Two key pieces of news today could be the ADP private payrolls estimate for December and the ISM Services PMI. Both statistics might lag what appears to be an economic slowdown.

Keep in mind that a recovering economy is a major component of the higher USD scenario.

USD/JPY - ...... Dlr resumed recent decline and fell briefly but sharply from 119.17 (AUS) to a fresh 11-week trough of 118.45 as news of China authority to extend share share ban triggered another wave of yen-buying on risk aversion.

As price has stabilised after said intra-day selloff, suggesting consolidation is in store.
However, as the Nikkei has continued to weaken, immediate short-covering rebound in the dlr is unlikely to be seen.

Offers are noted at 118.70/80 and more above with some stops reported above 119.00 and more above 119.30.
Some bids are touted above 118.50-40 and more below with stops touted below 118.00.

GBP/USD - ...... The pound continues its recent losing streak on Tuesday and fell to a near 9-month low of 1.4638 after market fear of a 'Brexit' grew after allowed his minister to campaign to leave the EU. Reuters reported
British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday bowed to pressure to allow government ministers to campaign to leave the European Union in an upcoming referendum, heading off the prospect of multiple resignations from his top team.

Cameron wants to keep Britain in the bloc if he can persuade other EU leaders to agree to his demands for reform before a vote expected to take place later this year, though he has cautioned he could campaign to leave if he doesn't get a deal.

A British exit would rock the Union - already shaken by differences over migration and the future of the euro zone - by ripping away its second-largest economy, one of its top two military powers and by far its richest city, London.
Pressed by lawmakers over his own future, Cameron - who has said he will not lead his party into the next parliamentary election due in 2020 - said he would not resign in the event of a 'no' vote in the EU referendum.
Europe played a major part in the downfall of two previous Conservative prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major.
