US Auto Sales Plunge To 6-Month Lows - Biggest Miss Since Nov 2008

Despite the blustering propaganda from CNBC's Phil LeBeau, it appears the Auto-sales (and massive inventory build) party is over in America. December US domestic auto sales SAAR printed 13.46 mm - the lowest in 6 months (missing expectations of 14.15mm by the most since November 2008). With non-revolving credit growth slowing in December, and inventories at record highs, the wheels just fell off the credit-fueled auto 'recovery'.

Which should not be a big surprise since we just suffered the lowest level of "plans to buy an auto" since January 2013:

Traders jumped the gun at the end of Dec and now the Feb contract has retreated 20 cents or so.

QG is a quarter the size, the Emini....use pull down to see other product. Also it is a "financial" contract, ie Cash settled, no deliveries of product. Thinner trading, but easier to hold.

They don't call Nat Gas the WidowMaker for nothing tho.

Ive been keeping a close watch on EURGBP today. GBPUSD trading very weak. Also EURGBP well bid in a range. Looks like GBP selling vs. EUR today.

The recent weakness of the GBP vs,. the EUR and USD recently has been notable.

John - folks start to believe "one and done" -- the Summers and Krugman followers will be ecstatic // if the Fed believes that its rate hike was the cause of this correction it may panic but correlation is not cause -- extremely stupid to think that 1/4 point tipped the Business Cycle (money supply has been growing sub 2% for months)

The Fed is now focused on inflation - employment is a minor concern -- But the Minutes for Dec may have gone through a major re-write overnight

Fed Losing Touch With Reality?

If the US economy is turning weaker than expected, will the Fed have to reconsider its policy tightening path? Two key pieces of news today could be the ADP private payrolls estimate for December and the ISM Services PMI. Both statistics might lag what appears to be an economic slowdown.

Keep in mind that a recovering economy is a major component of the higher USD scenario.
