Collapse in Shipping

Bit more of a nuanced view on why the Baltic Dry Index has fallen so far:

"The reason for the slump in the price goes beyond the slowing of the Chinese economy, because while the pace of growth is slowing down, growth is not.....

The world fleet doubled in size from 2010 to 2013. At the same time, China doubled its shipyard capacity and took huge orders for new ships as it sought to control the commodities trade."

FOMC TO SIGNAL CAUTION AS IT AWAITS FURTHER DATA

  • FOMC to stand pat and is unlikely to send a strong signal of a March rate hike
  • US and UK GDP releases likely to show  relatively modest growth in 2015 Q4
  • Modest near-term inflation pick up unlikely to stand in the way of further ECB stimulus

The New York Fed raised the rate it pays on overnight borrowings through RRPs with foreign central banks to 0.09 percent on average over the first nine months of 2015 from 0.03 percent during the same period of 2014, according to the U.S. central bank’s latest quarterly financial statements.

During the same period the Federal Open Market Committee held the RRP rate paid to domestic money-market funds at 0.05 percent.

Expansion of the foreign RRP pool could also be a sign that big domestic banks are telling foreign central banks to take their excess dollars elsewhere, because U.S. banks are trying to shrink their balance sheets, said Joseph Abate, a money-market strategist at Barclays Plc in New York, one of the 22 primary dealers that trades directly with the Fed.

oil still has a couple of bucks before reaches its broken channel lines so cad could strengthen further. it shouldnt retrace the full move below 138 so should stop c. 140. if we get a monthly close beloe 1380x then this move is over. thats not likely given oil would need to move higher and stay higher, so most will try a fib near 140 with a couple of fig stop under last low.

USD/JPY - 118.15
Although price has risen again in Asia on the back of strong gains in crude oil price as well as broad-based relief rally in Asian stocks, suggesting near term erratic upmove from Wed's 1-year bottom at 115.97 would head to 118.28/38 after consolidation, only a daily close above this previous res area would retain bullish prospect of stronger correction twd 118.85.

On the downside, below 117.54 (Asian low) would be the 1st signal top is in place and yield stronger retracement of aforesaid rise to 117.00/10 later.

You have made it the other way round:

Your idiotic $3 dlrs risk for $0.5 gain is of course, a disaster, not to mention the risk is 10% of the value.

Comparing with my previous trading plan on crude, yours is nothing.

What's more, let's take a look of history

If you followed this "great trader" call yesterday, Gold closed 1361.5 for that EXACT 1 h bar, shall small fish like you buy? then, 1337 was reached minutes ago.

Anyway, I don't even bother to compare yours positions with mine, we have opposite views and directions on r/r ratio ;).

ECB's President, put a stop to the risk-aversion trading yesterday, by giving quite a dovish speech and leaving the EU economic policy unchanged.

The European Central Bank opened doors for further easing, announcing a probable revision of the ongoing measures next March. This provided a boost to local share markets that led to US indexes and even commodities peaking.

Nonetheless, the oil price slide and the problems in China cast a shadowy doubt.

Meanwhile, Draghi opined that the rates will stay at current levels or dip for a longer period of time. He further mentioned that the downside risk has increased again.

USD/JPY - ...... Dlr pares intra-day gain after climbing to 117.95 at Asian open on early news report of possible easing measures by the BoJ at next Friday's policy meeting (see 01:28GMT update for details).

Looks like consolidation is in store until European open, however, intra-day strong rebound in Asian stocks suggests European Bourses will open high and this will continue to boost risk sentiment, leading to renewed yen-selling, therefore, trading dlr from long side for short-term trade is still favoured, reported offers at 117.28/38 area are expected to cap intra-day gain.
Initial bids are noted at 117.55-45 with stops below 117.25.

Later today, U.S. will release January mfg PMI, existing home sales n leading indicator, if these numbers miss market estimates, then expect dlr to come under selling pressure as the greenback has been based vs other G6 currencies in overnight New York session.

US/JPY - ...... Dollar continued its o/n gain New York session and climbed to an intra-day high of 117.95 at Asian open following dovish Reuters news report which came out ahead of Thursday's New York close.

Reuters reported the Bank of Japan is "taking a serious look" at expanding its monetary easing measures as sliding oil prices make it ever harder to reach its 2 percent inflation target, and a higher yen and falling stock prices would also loom large at the central bank's next two-day policy meeting on Jan. 28 and 29.
The Nikkei quoted one senior BOJ official as saying that sliding oil prices could depress inflation expectations among consumers. "Then we should consider additional easing," the official was quoted as saying.

While earlier Japan Financial Minister Aso said that they are closely watching the FX movements but won't comment on its levels, and stress that Japan economy's fundamentals are very strong.
With the declines in oil prices, Aso believed it is positive for Japan economy.
