Market Timers Losing Their Touch?
John, the only answer is printing money and that is just pushing on a string. Fiscal policy is the way to stimulate and that is not an option. Printing not spending = lack of confidence

Market Timers Losing Their Touch?
I don't know about a meltdown soon, but I think the "crowded trade" is investors looking for another "V-bottom" in stocks and that its not going to happen for a very long time.
Whether they realize it or not, they are waiting for the next global growth catalyst and there is none on the horizon. No new internet, China, U.S. consumer, etc. I think when investors realize this, stocks are going to fall and the central banks are going to realize they can do nothing about it.

All those clever clogs talking about a rally of a few weeks and THEN another sell off might just have to have another look at that.
Sell off, dead cat bounce and then ongoing sell off looks more like it.
Confidence in the economy, in the authorities, in the markets.... pretty close to zero. That's OK when the market is rallying, when it's not there really is NO tolerance for pain. NONE.
Central bankers? Looking like a very bad idea indeed.

The Townn Country grocery in Oriental, North Carolina, a local fixture for 44 years, closed its doors in October after a Wal-Mart store opened for business. Now, three months later -- and less than two years after Wal-Mart arrived -- the retail giant is pulling up stakes, leaving the community with no grocery store and no pharmacy.
Though mom-and-pop stores have steadily disappeared across the American landscape over the past three decades as the mega chain methodically expanded, there was at least always a Wal-Mart left behind to replace them. Now the Wal-Marts are disappearing, too.
I was devastated when I found out. We had a pharmacy and a perfectly satisfactory grocery store. Maybe Wal-Mart sold apples for a nickel less, said Barb Venturi, mayor pro tem for Oriental, with a population of about 900. If you take into account what no longer having a grocery store does to property values here

Johnson Controls Inc., already exiting the auto-industrys supply chain after decades as a key player, is now seeking to shed its U.S. corporate citizenship in a multibillion-dollar tie-up with Tyco International Plc.
The deal, announced early Monday, marks the latest attempt by a historic U.S. company to reduce its tax bill through a so-called inversion, a maneuver that allows U.S. corporations to acquire foreign-domiciled companies and shift their headquarters to reduce their tax rates.

Its not that 17.8 inches of snow wasnt enough.
But the number that will go down in the history books as Washingtons official total recorded at Reagan National Airport is downright paltry compared with some other spots in the region, raising the question: Why the disparity?
The reason, it turns out, may be partly due to the improvised technique used by a small team of weather observers at the airport who lost their snow-measuring device to the elements midway through the blizzard. It was buried by the very snow it was supposed to measure.

My Forex Trading Forecast for the Week Ahead
Slow motion trading to start the week and for those who missed it, I suggest watching my video forecast as EURUSD has tested the resistance zone but is still below 1.0850.

Open Access
What a start to the year with the third week ending with some sighs of relief with oil and equities recovering and the fx market following as extreme risk off positions got unwound. This sets the stage for a week where the focus will be on 3 central bank meetings, the RBNZ, FOMC and BoJ as markets look for reasons to extend current retracements. Each central bank meeting has potential to move markets although the key focus will be on the FOMC to see if the Fed blinks on its 3-4 rate hikes this year with markets pricing in 1-2. This suggests some caution on the dollar upside ahead of it but as i show, EURUSD is not a beneficiary after Draghi put a March easing on the table,

USD/JPY - ..... Dlr rallied in the 2nd part of last week on active short-covering. Reuters reported earlier speculators reduced bullish bets on the U.S. dollar for a fourth straight week, as net longs fell to their lowest level since late October, according to Reuters calculations and data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission released on Friday.
The value of the dollar's net long position slid to $25.03 billion in the week ended Jan. 19, from $25.29 billion in the previous week. This was the third straight week that net dollar longs came in below $30 billion.
The volatility in financial markets driven by the downtrend in oil has diminished the allure of the dollar against both the euro and yen, which have lower interest rates than the U.S. currency.
This week, Japanese yen net longs totaled 37,653 contracts, from 25,266 previously. This week's yen net longs were the largest since mid-February 2012.
These days, the safe haven yen and low-yielding euro tend to struggle in times of increased risk appetite because these currencies are often used to fund investment in risky assets. They consequently rise back up when there is a retreat from those assets in periods of market stress.
Japan's exports fell 8.0 percent in December from a year earlier, down for the third straight month, Ministry of Finance data showed on Monday, in a sign the slowdown in China's economy and emerging markets is taking a toll on external demand.
The decline compares with economists' median estimate for a 6.8 percent drop in a Reuters poll. It followed a 3.3 percent decrease in November.
Imports fell 18.0 percent in December, versus the median forecast for a 16.4 percent decline, bringing the trade balance to a surplus of 140.2 billion yen ($1.18 billion). Economists expected a surplus of 100.0 billion yen.
