having broken 110 it poss we move major res at 11145 after taking 11060-85 zone out. however normally you trade within prev days range (dwn to 10975 would be enough to negate below view). 10r going thru 2.30 to test 235-238 can take us to 11145 but if buyers of the 10yr come in at this major level, you could see a 2.30 or sub close, taking yen from 11145 to 110 tomorrow by the close. tops or bottoms form often on major intraday retracements. its never worth trying to pick tops or bottoms, but we have gone from 101 to 110 in a week with no daily retracement and you have to consider it with the 10yr not far from a major hurdle. further down the line the reflation trade can take us much higher than 110 assuming bonds break the lt trend, but many mkts now ob or os and could do with a healthy retracement for a day or two before reasserting with the underlying trend by the close of the following wk.

U.S. dollar, global stocks climb as Yellen signals rate hike coming -- Reuters.com
Reply
"Global stock indexes rose along with the U.S. dollar on Thursday after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said the central bank could raise interest rates "relatively soon."

Yellen, who testified on the economic outlook before the congressional Joint Economic Committee, indicated little had changed following the victory of Donald Trump in the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election.

She said she intended to serve out her term, which ends in 2018, and indicated the Fed remained on track to raise rates at its meeting next month..."

Trading Themes--
  • Thursday saw Congressional testimony by Fed Chair Yellen was expected to be the highlight of the week and it proved to be. It appeared that she confirmed market expectations for a rate hike on December 14. During and after her testimony, yields on the U.S. 10-yr note rose and the EURUSD steadily fell. She also said she intends to serve her complete term until early 2018.

  • Another USD positive was the Bank of Japan announcement that it was conducting its first operation to cap JGB rising yields by buying bonds. It tries to cap the 10-yr JGB at 1.00%. Sovereign bond yields globally have been rising in the wake of the Trump victory.

  • Thursday saw generally positive U.S. economic data. As for now markets are trading on data collected before the Trump presidential victory last week. At that time the economy was showing mixed improvement signs. The Trump administration will not be installed for another two months. His inauguration is on January 20, 2017. At this point though we still know little about who will be in his cabinet.

  • Friday will see only the Canadian CPI figures in the way of key data. Markets are expecting a strong fiscal stimulus from the new administration in the way of infrastructure spending, lower taxes, increased energy production and a reduction in government red tape. Increased economic growth is expected to lead to rising stock prices, higher interest rates and a stronger USD.

Much has changed in a few short 8 days and Trump hasn't even been sworn in. His plans are bold and ambitious BUT if the Republicans want to retain both houses in the mid-term they will have to say NO to much of his spending plans.

tomorrow we will see their hand as 2.30 is coming up on the 10yr. its poss they fluctuate and close at 2.30, but if breached then 2.35-2.38 is the nxt res and marks the last high of the multidecade downtrend. if breached you will see 2.50 quite quickly. if that if taken then 2.68 within days followed by 3%. normally such moves took months/years but the short term approach the mkt takes, it is going to happen v quickly. and you cant hedge against that. but not to get ahead of ourselves, as anything below 235-238 and we could just be marking a high that isnt seen all next year. so we are at an inflection point.

Any increase in interest rates is probably going to be felt the most severe among mortgage holders in Australia whether they be investors or owner-occupiers.
1. Rents in Melbourne and Sydney have recently been falling.
2. Wages have been increasing at the lowest on record.
3. The average mortgage in Sydney is AUD 550,000,
4. Average weekly take home earnings in May was AUD 1,575.

A 50 basis points increase in interest rates based on the average mortgage equates to AUD 27,500 while a 2% increase to the average wage is AUD 1,638.00.

Sydney and Melbourne property prices have increased by around 50% over the last three years.

As Frank Sinatra once said "Somethings Gotta Give" and that's probably AUD/USD.

Ain't that the truth John. Now you think 5 percent? You must be kidding. 25 year fixed rate mortgages are now available in France at... wait for it: 1.25 percent FIXED. Seriously. So the bank margin is what? I don't know. Not much I would assume. A five percent mortgage looks like a rip off. Not so long ago it would have been a very good deal. And we are all now used to this. Even though during the GFC - which was not during the Dark Ages - mortgage rates spiked higher.

Don't know who is swimming naked but we are about to find out. Creative thinking is recommended.

At what point do higher funding costs becomes a real concern for economic growth and government funding programmes. Double digits would be a big problem. Can we do 5 percent on the 30 year without too many issues? Don't know. There must be a back of th envelope calculation out there somewhere.

Just a thought about the Housing Starts data, keep in mind this is "pre-Trump" data. Post-Trump, we saw a sharp decline in weekly Mortgage applications yesterday, presumably in response to higher rates.

As for future data, keep in mind what will be coming out for the next couple of weeks will be "Pre-Trump". "Post-Trump" data will gradually filter in. Also keep in mind he does not take over for about two months.

As pointed out in our meeting (those who don't attend are missing out), EURUSD 1.0759 is the key level and unless taken out, treat the move up as a correction, which was needed to setup a fresh run at the downside. I also said keep an eye on US bond yields again as this is the fx driver.

Now EURUSD 1.07 and USDJPY 109.50 both pivotal.

Supports at 1.0680-83 (LOD) ahead of the 1.0665 low.

Why JPY is most sensitive to rising yields (in Europe as well) is the BoJ is capping rates in Japan.

Today's testimony by Yellen may be the first shot in a year long battle - if the committee picks up on the populism theme and pushes Yellen for firmer commitments it will signal future pressure from the new administration (VP-elect Pence served in the House of Representatives w/ many of these committee members) -- one of the TRUMP nominees will likely be Yellen's replacement next year as Chairman

That Exit Door

What's good for the United States might not necessarily good for the Australian economy.

Case in point

Paris ib 10:34 GMT November 17, 2016
That Exit Door

The Australian economy will be very badly hit in a rising interest rate environment if that's what we are heading into. First, because almost all private sector borrowing is on variable rates and fixed rates are available only up 2-5 years. Most people are on straight out variable. Second, because private sector real estate debt is at record levels and property prices are also in the stratosphere. And third because with the mining sector in trouble real estate is what has kept the Australian economy humming along. Last, but not least, if the U.S.-China relationship deteriorates and that impacts China then Australia will be caught in the backwash as China is Australia's export market.

Trading Themes--
  • The Bank of Japan surprised markets by conducting its first operation to cap JGB rising yields by buying bonds. It targets the 10-yr JGB at 1.00%. Sovereign bond yields globally have been rising after the Trump victory.

  • Today sees another busy day for data. The highlight event is testimony on the economy by Fed Chair Yellen starting at 15:00 GMT (prepared text is due at 13:00 GMT). Hints on future monetary policy could be forthcoming. Market odds strongly favor a Fed hike rate hike on December 14. I feel the Fed will speed up pace of interest rate hikes in the new year.

  • As for now markets are trading on data collected before the Trump presidential victory last week. At that time the economy was showing mixed signs of improvement. The Trump administration will not be installed for another two months. His inauguration is on January 20, 2017. At this point though we still know little about who will be in his cabinet.

  • Markets are expecting a strong fiscal stimulus from the new administration in the way of infrastructure spending, lower taxes, increased energy production and a reduction in government red tape. Increased economic growth is expected to lead to rising stock prices, higher interest rates and a stronger USD.

Dollar stays near 13-and-a-half year peak; BOJ bond operation weighs on yen -- Reuters.com
Reply
"The dollar caught its breath on Thursday, after charging to a 13-1/2 year high against a basket of currencies on bets the Trump administration will adopt inflationary policies, while the yen sagged after a Bank of Japan bond-buying operation.

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against six major rival currencies, eased 0.1 percent to 100.32 .DXY, after climbing as high as 100.57 on Wednesday, its loftiest peak since April 2003.

The yen retreated from its intraday highs after the Bank of Japan conducted its first special operation to curb rising yields on Japanese government bonds (JGBs)..."

War On Cash Intensifies: Citibank To Stop Accepting Cash At Some Branches:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-11-16/war-cash-intensifies-citibank-stop-accepting-cash-some-branches

This is how it works.

The government, media, banks, and even academia have formed a single, unified chorus to push this idea out to consumers that “cashless” is good for everyone.

And it’s happening across the planet, from Australia to India to Europe to North America.

They’re partially right.

Going cashless probably will save a lot of money; paper currency is costly to transport in large quantities due to the need for security.

It’s also accurate to suggest that going cashless will be “good for the banks.”

As UBS pointed out yesterday, “de-monetizing” Australia’s $50 and $100 bills would force anyone holding those notes to deposit them back in the banking system.

Bank deposits would rise as a result, and consequently, so would bank profits.

Governments would benefit from a cashless society because all savings would be in the banking system, and they have full regulatory control over the banks.

This means that your politicians would have more control over your savings and fewer obstacles to impose capital controls or engage in Civil Asset Forfeiture.

Even policy wonk academics would have a rare opportunity to take their lousy theories and PhD dissertations for a test drive.

Everyone benefits from a cashless society… except for you.

For individuals, cash still has plenty of important...."

Oil Man Who Foresaw Crash Sees OPEC Uniting in Self-Interest

..."It’s in the interest of all producers to reach a deal that’s aimed at stabilizing prices, which are 61 percent lower than their 2014-highs, said Gary Ross, executive chairman at PIRA Energy Group, which is now a part of S&P Global Platts. A failure to implement an agreement could drag down crude to as low as $35 a barrel, while success at the group’s meeting later this month may push oil to $60, almost 35 percent higher than current levels, he said."...
