Forex Trading Ideas -- Pre-Market Wed 14 Dec 2016

Forex Trading Outlook

  • Activity in the GBP dominated trade again on Tuesday. The GBP started out the day bid on the back of hotter than expected inflation data, but The EURUSD suddenly turned bid late in the London as long GBP positions were suddenly unwound. The U.K. will see its latest employment report well before the FOMC decision, which comes after the U.K. close.

  • By now, U.S. markets should be prepared up for the widely-expected +25bp Fed rate hike on Wednesday. With rates still at ridiculously low levels, higher rates do not mean much. Its the signals about the pace of future hikes that matter. Markets will be watching the "Dot Plot" forecasts and Chair Yellen's testimony for guidance.

  • The FOMC is seen raising the mid-point of its 0.25%-0.50% target range (0.375%) for Fed Funds by 25bps to 0.625%. Markets placed 100% odds on a rate hike. News algos often do not know what we humans expect. They mindlessly react to headlines, so the Fed rate hike could trigger price volatility. With the U.S. moving to a more expansive fiscal policy, Yellen should be cautious, but the tone of her comments should be less dovish than in the past.

  • ECB President Draghi was playing a semantics game Thursday when he announced the "taper" of its asset purchases to EUR60b per mo from EUR80b starting in April 2017, but he claimed it was not a "taper". His dovish comments were an effort to soften the blow.

appears yield spreads moved against euro thru this particular move off the days highs, probably not too much downside below 106 maybe 10570/80 pre fed but any squeezes of note have already been dealt with. 10690 would have been nice, a lot were looking for it, poss why it got chased dwn once rally faded. cable, while inflation is a given frm weak pound, its more of a stretch to look for employment running ahead during this uncertain phase, so it poss that tomorrows data doesnt follow the recent trend of beats. i think things are in limbo for now, which is enough to cap emp gains. even so, cable would be worth picking up on a dip tom after data and also quite poss after fed hike, depending on the text.

For those who missed our meeting, as I explained, EURUSD and GBPUSD have been driven today out of EURGBP more than vs. the USD. This provides opportunities as follow through tends to be difficult when in a tug-of-war where the dollar is not the main focus. Note how EURUSD lost its bid after EURGBP failed to hold .84+

Forex Trading Ideas -- Tues 13 Dec 2016

Forex Trading Outlook

  • Today markets will be setting up for a widely expected +25bp Fed rate hike on Wednesday. With rates still at ridiculously low levels. higher rates will not realy mean much. Its the signals about the pace of future hikes that will matter. Markets will be watching the "dot plots" and Chair Yellen's testimony for guidance.

  • The GBP is in the headlines today. Potentially market-moving data could be U.K. inflation data, when CPI and RPI data are released. The Bank of England targets inflation, so with levels still below target, the impact of ther report will be largely psychological. GBPUSD price swings can can impact EURUSD via the EURGBP cross.

  • As for Wednesday's FOMC policy decision, the central bank is seen raising the mid-point of its 0.25%-0.50% target range (0.375%) for Fed Funds by 25bps to 0.625%. Markets placed 100% odds on a rate hike. News algos do not know what we expect. They mindlessly react to headlines, so the Fed rate hike could trigger price volatility.

  • With the U.S. moving to a more expansive fiscal policy, Yellen should be cautious about the future, but the tone of her comments should be less dovish than in the past, which SHOULD be USD constructive.

  • ECB President Draghi was playing a semantics game Thursday when he announced the "taper" of its asset purchases to EUR60b per mo from EUR80b starting in April 2017, but he claimed it was not a "taper". His dovish comments were an effort to "soften" the blow. The ECB is unlikely to increase future asset purchases.

USD/JPY - ..... Although the greenback continued its recent winning streak on Monday and climbed to a fresh 10-month peak of 116.13 in Europe as gain in the Nikkie to a 1-year high plus rising U.S. Treasury yields (benchmark 10-year bond yield briefly hit fresh 2-year high of 2.528%) boosted risk appetite, broad-based long liquidation in the usd in New York session as investors took risk off the table ahead of today's 2-day Fed rate meeting sent dlr lower to 114.86 in New York afternoon, price briefly fell to 114.74 after hitting stops below 114.80.
However, renewed buying interest emerged at Asian open and lifted the pair.

Intra-day rebound from 114.74 suggests 1st leg of correction from said yesterday's high has ended and choppy range trading is in store with mild upside bias but strong gain is not envisaged.

Bids are noted at 115.00 and more at 114.85/75 with stops below there.
Offers are tipped at 115.50/60 and more above with stops above 116.15.
