Forex Trading Ideas -- Pre-Market for Thu 15 Dec 2016

Forex Trading Outlook

  • Thursday sees a slew of data pushed forward due to holidays next week. A slew of flash PMIs are scheduled along with Australian employment, policy decisions from the BOE and the SNB.

  • U.K. retail sales data will likely be another market-moving release. The U.S. featured releases are: CPI and Weekly Jobless Claims.

  • U.S. markets should have been set up for the Fed policy decision today, but apparently they were not. As expected, the FOMC raised the mid-point of its 0.25%-0.50% target range (0.375%) for Fed Funds by 25bps to 0.50% to 0.75% (0.625%). The Fed "Dot-Plot" forecasts for interest rates were raised in response to recent economic developments. On the other hand, as expected, Yellen was less dovish, but remained cautious.

  • True to form, the news algos reacted to headlines, so the Fed rate hike triggered significant price volatility.

BREAKING NEWS:

Fed Policy Statement

For release at 2:00 p.m. EST
Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in November indicates that the labor market has continued to strengthen and that economic activity has been expanding at a moderate pace since mid-year. Job gains have been solid in recent months and the unemployment rate has declined. Household spending has been rising moderately but business fixed investment has remained soft. Inflation has increased since earlier this year but is still below the Committee's 2 percent longer-run objective, partly reflecting earlier declines in energy prices and in prices of non-energy imports. Market-based measures of inflation compensation have moved up considerably but still are low; most survey-based measures of longer-term inflation expectations are little changed, on balance, in recent months.

Consistent with its statutory mandate, the Committee seeks to foster maximum employment and price stability. The Committee expects that, with gradual adjustments in the stance of monetary policy, economic activity will expand at a moderate pace and labor market conditions will strengthen somewhat further. Inflation is expected to rise to 2 percent over the medium term as the transitory effects of past declines in energy and import prices dissipate and the labor market strengthens further. Near-term risks to the economic outlook appear roughly balanced. The Committee continues to closely monitor inflation indicators and global economic and financial developments.

In view of realized and expected labor market conditions and inflation, the Committee decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 1/2 to 3/4 percent. The stance of monetary policy remains accommodative, thereby supporting some further strengthening in labor market conditions and a return to 2 percent inflation.

In determining the timing and size of future adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate, the Committee will assess realized and expected economic conditions relative to its objectives of maximum employment and 2 percent inflation. This assessment will take into account a wide range of information, including measures of labor market conditions, indicators of inflation pressures and inflation expectations, and readings on financial and international developments. In light of the current shortfall of inflation from 2 percent, the Committee will carefully monitor actual and expected progress toward its inflation goal. The Committee expects that economic conditions will evolve in a manner that will warrant only gradual increases in the federal funds rate; the federal funds rate is likely to remain, for some time, below levels that are expected to prevail in the longer run. However, the actual path of the federal funds rate will depend on the economic outlook as informed by incoming data.

The Committee is maintaining its existing policy of reinvesting principal payments from its holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities in agency mortgage-backed securities and of rolling over maturing Treasury securities at auction, and it anticipates doing so until normalization of the level of the federal funds rate is well under way. This policy, by keeping the Committee's holdings of longer-term securities at sizable levels, should help maintain accommodative financial conditions.

Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Janet L. Yellen, Chair; William C. Dudley, Vice Chairman; Lael Brainard; James Bullard; Stanley Fischer; Esther L. George; Loretta J. Mester; Jerome H. Powell; Eric Rosengren; and Daniel K. Tarullo.

of course its dwn to the reaction, always is first and foremost but hike is done, else they would have wheeled out speakers about a wk ago to redirect mkt. its how hawkish they are going forward, the dots. not sure for them the economy has moved on that much, certainly they are unlikely to forecast 3 hikes nxt year, really what the mkt neds to rally much further, we have about one and a half hikes priced in nxt year as is. what i would say is if they do join the hype, it will be a v big shift and will given huge legs for further usd rally, couple of course with stocks. however given their fear of the economy turning lower, i dont think they will be comfortable at this stage in green lighting the usd rally. saying nothing about usd is in fact saying something. at least after today we will know what side of fence they stand.

Labour market data fails to move sterling as all eyes turn to Fed -- Reuters.com
Reply
"LONDON, Dec 14 Sterling steadied on Wednesday after data showed the number of people in work in Britain falling but wages growing, as investors focused on a Federal Reserve meeting later in the day that is set to produce the first interest rate rise in a year.

The Office for National Statistics numbers suggested a slowing in the labour market after the Brexit vote, with the number of people in work falling by 6,000 in the three months to October - the first decline since the second quarter of last year..."

Forex Trading Ideas -- Wed 14 Dec 2016

Forex Trading Outlook

  • The U.S. will release November Retail Sales data on the N.Y. open today. A number of other key items are due as well.

  • U.S. markets have been set up for a Fed rate hike later today for a couple of months. U.S. rates have been set at a ridiculously low level, for years, and a 25bp rate hike is not likely to matter much. Its the signals about the future course of policy that will produce the headlines. With the U.S. moving to a more expansive fiscal policy, Yellen should be less dovish. Nevertheless, she has had a pattern of cautiousness that we are likely to see again today.

  • The FOMC should raise the mid-point of its 0.25%-0.50% target range (0.375%) for Fed Funds by 25bps to 0.625%. News algos often do not know what we humans expect. They mindlessly react to headlines, so the Fed rate hike could trigger price volatility.

  • The GBP dominated is trading weaker today following a lackluster unemployment report for October and November. Swings into and out of the EURGBP cross have been having a significant impact on the EURUSD pair this week, as post-Brexit trades are being unwound. No changes in policy are expected from the Bank of England on Thursday.

GBP/USD Forex Trading Tips
Reply
The GBP/USD pair is seen extending previous losses, as the bears remain in control amid risk-off markets, which dampen the sentiment around the higher-yielding currency GBP.

The major trades largely subdued, despite broad based US dollar weakness, as investors shift to the side-lines and refrain from placing directional bets on the cable, in the showdown to the highly-influential event of this year, the FOMC interest rate decision, with a 25 bps rate hike widely expected.

In the meantime, the major may receive some fresh impetus from the UK labor market report, BOE Governor Carney’s speech and US macro releases due on the cards later today.

The GBP/USD pair is last seen changing hands at 1.2651, down -0.06% on the day, hovering close to 10-DMA at 1.2645.

Now the GBP/USD exchange rate is 1.2654
