According to analysts, you better buy gold because gold has 0% interest rate, that compared to negative ones in some major currencies.
The fact is that those who owned Eur, Chf, Yen all bearing negative interest rates currencies, made very well compare to positive yielding ones like; NZD AUD USD GBP.
Those who sold their Neg. interest currencies for Stox, got already whacked, and probably the next will come from gold.
Regarding the effects those Neg. interest currencies cause, maybe one should own them rather than the positive yielding ones.
Gold rise this time is a mania only, and this is the only explanation(look at J. Cramer last nite), where in fact there is no demand for physical gold except by institutional, which will be more than happy to drop it on the head of the speculators.

With the central bank already in Congresss crosshairs on a variety of issues from regulatory policy to the transparency of its operations, the last thing it needs is to be blamed for making a monetary policy error by raising rates prematurely.

so this would put crude oil even bigger pressure as it is still coming out of the ground but you have nowwhere to store it as storage is near full.

Aussie has tended to be bought as a hedge against inflation. While on the week it hasn't moved much this has masked the degree of volatilty. On two separate days (Tuesday and Thrsday) the currency got hammered sank to below 70 USA cents (0.6985) but on each occasion on the day it rallied all the way back to 71 US cents.
I read that spot iron ore was quoted at USD 43.00 a tonne prior to the Lunar New Year, gold well need I say more and copper is clinging tenaciously to 200 cents a pound.

DJ Yellen: US Economy Behind Dollar's Strength -- Market Talk
12:55 ET - During her Senate Banking Committee testimony, Yellen offered some thoughts on the yawning gap between US monetary policy and that of some other advanced economies--which are slashing rates below zero. "We have a global economy in which there is considerable weakness in many parts of the world," singling out Europe and Japan. Although some countries are adopting expansionary monetary policies in order to boost inflation and to address weakness in their economies, Yellen noted the US is in a different position. "The US, with a 4.9% unemployment rate, is far-more advanced in that process of recovery--and the different cyclical positions of our different economies are a factor that is pushing up the dollar." She added the dollar's strength in part reflects "disproportionate" strength in the US economy. ([email protected]; @HarrietTorry)

U.S. Energy Information Administration data on Wednesday showed inventories at the Cushing, Oklahoma delivery hub hit a record 64.7 million barrels last week - just 8 million barrels shy of its theoretical limit - stoking concerns that tanks may overflow in coming weeks.

IF Gold dosen't get wacked this week, with Yellen's 2 day 6 hour grilling by lawmakers and the 10Y and the 30Y auction going off on those days...
THEN: CBs have lost control.
Today Trader Yellen faces the Senate Banking Committee, a bit more erudite and more secure in their positions...terms in the Senate 6 years -- the House 2 years, so there will be less political grandstanding. Their main constituency consists of corporations, big banks, and lobbyists, as opposed to the hoi polloi-voter that House Members must face bi-annually.
However, they and their constituents have so far this week taken a big hit to their portfolios, and self-interest was never considered anything but a virtue among this crowd. There is also surely some annoyance that the Presidential primaries are so far showing a strong anti-establishment bend, which can only be fueled by talk of Negative Interest Rates and Market turmoil pointing the finger of failure at Trader Yellen and the Federal Reserves 8 year long policy of Monetary Repression.
Several on the committee were never "friends of the court" either, esp Elizabeth Warren.

I did not think the Yellen testimony would mean much today, but clearly it will. Her prepared text usually will not change, but she MIGHT plant a question with the committee Chair. It appears that happens occasionally so she can comment on today's developments. She can't be comfortable with LT U.S. rates falling like this today. Problem is I don't see anything in the U.S. triggering today's developments. Also I don't see how the U.S. can respond.

With USDJPY having fallen over 8% to a low today at 110.97 vs. a 121.11 spike high set less than two weeks ago following the surprise BoJ decision to cut rates to negative, the market will be on high alert for any hints of intervention. In fact, USDJPY just spiked higher following reports that the BoJ was checking forex rates. By itself this means little as all central banks have access to electronic platforms so it is a warning in what will be a battle to keep USDJPY above 110. I would be surprised if the Japanese central bank was not already intervening covertly or through surrogates to try and offset some of the safe haven flows into the JPY.

Now.... ish. But it won't be default. It will be taxing and reducing pensions, raising age limits, changing entitlements. In the case of private pensions and superannuation it is more likely you just lose your savings buddy and too bad. The process is underway. It also depends on how much 'they' can raise taxes on everyone else to convince people to keep the pension ponzi going a little longer. But it is already happening. In the UK pension entitlements are getting carved up.

As stock markets take a huge hit Yellen has to choose: the USD or the stock market. She goes for tightening rhetoric and the USD might see some buying (I would expect that to be short lived), she goes for easing rhetoric and the USD gets nuked.

Purk I was totally mainstream until a few years after 9 11 when I happened on a link on Bull not Bull (now no longer updated). When I came to understand that maybe 9 11 was NOT what 'they' said it was... Then you start to wonder about a lot of things. IMVHO the guys behind 9 11 totally stuffed up. They took a huge risk, and despite the control of the mainstream media, there are too many people who question what is going on. In short 9 11 was a mistake by the powers-that-be. Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if it were confirmed that the Yanks never did get to the moon after all. 10 years ago I used to laugh at the conspiracy nuts. Trouble is the conspiracies now have more predictive power than the mainstream media. So if you go with the scientific method (keep a theory as long as it has predictive power) you have to be a conspiracy theorist. Who'd have thought it? :-)

First risk: the nut cases decide to bomb everyone in a fit of pique.

USD/JPY: the canary in the coal mine
nh - in terms of trade and capital flows EUR USD is a sideshow. In terms of capital and trade flows USD JPY is where it is at. China is important if you like but who trades the Chinese currency? And the Chinese economy is only important as a slave colony for Western industry.
USD JPY is a proxy for Asia if you like. Japan is a de facto U.S. colony. It is occupied and has been since Captain Perry sailed in, though the real occupation happened after the U.S. launched two nuclear bombs. Recent policy moves in Japan - which took USD JPY off 80 - show just how much control the U.S. has over Japan. The BoJ did more to save the USD than the FED could or did.
So for me the USD/JPY is a litmus test. If, despite the manipulation, they can't hold it - and it's NOT holding - then the USD has a real problem.
FWIW it is my contention that the U.S. domination of global economics and finance has not been achieved via consensus or cooperation. Should it become clear that that hold is weakening - and I believe it is - then the movement away from the USD could very easily become an avalanche. Geopolitics, and the emergence of a determined Russian resistance only adds fuel to the fire.
So for me the USD/JPY is the canary in the coal mine. Pay attention when it moves.

Indian Point tritium leak 80% worse than originally reported
Reply
New measurements at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in upstate New York show levels of radioactive tritium 80 percent higher than reported last week. Plant operator insists the spill is not dangerous, as state officials call for a safety probe.
Entergy, which operates the facility 25 miles (40 km) north of New York City, says the increased levels of tritium represent fluctuations that can be expected as the material migrates.
Even with the new readings, there is no impact to public health or safety, and although these values remain less than one-tenth of one percent of federal reporting guidelines, Entergy said in a statement
New York governor Andrew Cuomo raised an alarm last Saturday over the reports of groundwater contamination at Indian Point, noting that the company reported alarming levels of radioactivity at three monitoring wells, with radioactivity increasing nearly 65,000 percent at one of them.
The groundwater wells have no contact with any drinking water supplies, and the spill will dissipate before it reaches the Hudson River, a senior Entergy executive argued Tuesday, suggesting the increased state scrutiny was driven by the companys decision to shut down another nuclear power plant.

ib - I don't know which of your posts re:USD/JPY to respond to -- this seems the oldest so -- exactly why do you believe the yen is critical to USD value? -- as I mentioned earlier this is a Japanese focus problem not USD related
My thought is that China was irrelevant prior to HK takeover and that the Asian balance re:JPY was rearranged after ~2004
