JP - another guy w/ the 1937 bogeyman - the Fed was different then, the US monetary regime was still tied to GOLD (but gold had been confiscated) and the FDIC was in place to avoid the seize up of Money Supply -- the Recession had little to do with interest rates; most of the problem in 1937 was fiscal policy
The problem in Japan is the same as it has been for the past 20 years -- Fiscal Policy was not focused on the consumer saving side of the contraction and monetary policy reacted w/ an interest rate policy that was not appropriate to the Japanese savings based economy (nega interest rate may be the last straw before somebody wakes them from this nightmare)
AND 1998 was a classic EM bubble, it's the nature of the BEAST (Soviet Union and the collapse of Empires made it look worse)
These aren't even GOOD analogies
____________
Yellen was her timid self again (I guess nobody asks the Treasury secretary for his dollar view anymore) - Volcker testimony and operations were 180 degrees different

The head of Russia’s Investigative Committee, Aleksandr Bastrykin, has called for the creation of an international coalition of states to fight the “dictatorship” imposed by the US on the rest of the world, and to reject the use the US dollar as a reserve currency.
Speaking at a roundtable in Moscow, Bastrykin said that the world urgently needed a new system of checks and balances that would allow equal representation of all nations on the international political arena.
He said an alliance of countries was needed which could act in concert as “a feasible pole to counter the dictatorship imposed by the Americans together with their Western allies,” according to the minutes of the roundtable

Hostilities in Syria could come to a halt within a week after confirmation by the government of President Bashar Assad and the opposition, according to an official communiqué from the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting.

No one here has commented on it, but one Senator yesterday complained about the muddled messages coming out of the Fed. Yellen seemed ready for the comment and said that the policy at the central bank is for Fed members to indicate when they are speaking for themselves and when they are talking about Fed policy.
I am now watching anything these guys say to see if their behavior has changed. If they start to toe a party line rather than freelancing it, their comments could become useful for trading as they once were.

- seen dollar weaken a bit in recent weeks
- completely agrees wtih Chairwoman Yellen's assessment of policy environment
- won't commit on rate decisions because data could change before March meeting; recent events will factor into March decision
- policy decisions overseas will not have much impact on US economy, negative rates abroad have only small effects on the US economy
- Talk of negative rates for the US is premature, not spending a lot of time thinking about it, there are many other actions the Fed would take before resorting to negative rates

euro a bit sticky here but watch the hourly close for euro. if they test 20 into the close they can move lower into new hour before a bounce and thats where youd want to cover to get the hours low and reload higher if necessary. a test of 20 well before the close of the hour might mean a rebound first and maybe or maybe not lower. 20 is the 23.6 fib so once tested and bounced doesnt have to go dwn again. prob will but not a sure thing.

intervention. if uncorodinated tends not to last more than a few hours or days if going against the trend/flows. however, as a last line of defence it may be required as a lesser evil than doing nothing. the CB intervening is naturally going to want to get biggest bang for buck and to hit speculators hardest...
back in the day the break between cme pit and globax left 45 min window to hit the market. today, friday, they can consider late US session when market is thinnest, many has clocked off. in the last hour they can do a lot of damage for relatively little money and technically "correct" some bad looking charts on the wkly close (115/116). do it earlier and they will fade, but that late on and everyone will be sent packing as nobody will hold lrg over long weekend and with china set to return.
ultimately you cant fight flows but if they want to slow things down and burn a few fingers, they can.

EUR/USD - ...... Euro pares yesterday's erratic rise to a fresh 3-1/2 month high of 1.1377 in New York session and retreated in Asian morning to 1.1302. Traders reported fairly good offers were noted at 1.1370/80, so intra-day retreat suggests choppy consolidation with downside bias is in store as market now test euro's downside and short-term specs may probe for euro's sup (stop hunting).
As a slew of important European data are due out, expect choppy price action after the release.
Pay attention to German inflation data at 07:00GMT and flash GDP, Italy will release GDP at 09:00GMT followed by EZ GDP and u=industrial production at 10:00GMT.

USD/JPY - .... The Japanese yen took centre stage again in Asia today, not by its sharp price moves but by Japanese officials' rhetorics (see previous updates) who expressed dismay over this week's spectacular but unwelcome yen's ascent.
Although dlr briefly dipped to 111.91 when the Nikkei opened lower weakened by 4%, falling briefly below psychological 15,000 level, intra-day recovery in the N225 index plus comments by Japanese officials quickly lifted the pair to 112.60.
Looks like dlr would gain respite today n brings choppy trading above yesterday's fresh 15-month trough at 110.99. If Asian stocks pare recent losses, one can expect a modest bounce.
Bids are noted at 116.80-60 area and more below with stops below 110.90.
Offers are tipped at 112.60/70 with some stops above there, however, more selling interest is reported at 113.00/20 area. Pay attention to release of key U.S. retail sales at 13:30GMT.
