BREAKING NEWS
"The UK will also be able to enact emergency safeguards to protect the City of London, Downing Street said, and EU treaties will be amended to state explicitly that references to the requirement to seek ever-closer union "do not apply to the United Kingdom"."
This is nothing new because SOVEREIGNTY provides this despite any treaty, agreement or suggestion otherwise
This highlights the silliness of the whole EU concept - there is no enforcement measure - it's a trade zone that parts of it uses scrip (EUR)
Britain could easily negotiate individual agreements w/ the EU (representing its constituent parts) and avoid the silliness of an EU Court ruling that is a mere suggestion
It's not in the EUR zone so a divorce can be amicable w/o the attendant financial nastiness
Get off this TAR BABY before this whole mess collapses

Today's CPI may be the precursor to a Fed panic or a mere one off BUT the Fed has repeatedly said it would tolerate a higher inflation rate and maintain gradual "tightening" -- SO now a market that has debunked any further rate hikes needs to believe a Fed that has lost credibility -- will the market wait to see if the Fed can really wait or will it take action to move out the door on the first whiff of smoke?
So do ya feel lucky, punk??

Regardless of CPI demotion by the Fed a higher than expected figure will have more of an impact than a downside miss because a) it will be a negative impact on LT expectations which are now biased towards deflation fear and b) it will be a second data point following a "surprising" but generally irrelevant PPI
This upside plays against the Fed because it adds to the sense of confusion that the Minutes displayed in full view -- not dovish, not hawkish, just lost

Although euro's break of indicated daily sup at 1.1086 to 1.1071 in New York morning on Thur suggests the medium- term rise from 2015 Dec's 7-1/2 month bottom at 1.0523 has made a top last week at 1.1377, intra-day rebound in Asia today suggests consolidation with near term upside bias is in store, above 1.1150/57 res would bring stronger retracement to 1.1179, however, reckon res at 1.1193 would hold and yield retreat later today or Monday.
Below 1.1071 would extend to 1.1060 (December's high, now sup), however, weakening of downward momentum should keep euro above projected sup at 1.0035/40.

I remember that when the euro was being designed in the late 1990s, I argued with my European G7 colleagues that skirmishing over seigniorage by issuing a 500 euro note was highly irresponsible and mostly would be a boon to corruption and crime.
in certain circles the 500 euro note is known as the Bin Laden confirms the arguments against it.
Id guess the idea of removing existing notes is a step too far. But a moratorium on printing new high denomination notes would make the world a better place.
If Europe moved, pressure could likely be brought on others, notably Switzerland.
I confess to not being surprised that resistance within the ECB is coming out of Luxembourg, with its long and unsavory tradition of giving comfort to tax evaders, money launderers, and other proponents of bank secrecy and where 20 times as much cash is printed, relative to gross domestic, compared to other European countries.

There are 300 million AUD 100 notes and a further 600 million AUD 50 notes. Ignoring other notes and coin that's 60 billion dollars.
There are now 24 million people in Australia.
That's AUD 2,500 for everyone from 0-105.
I never carry more than AUD 200 and that's after I've been to an ATM.
The only time the average person would have more than AUD 500 I'd say is when they're paying a tradesman and avoiding GST.
There's something to be said for periodically replacing all notes in circulation and requiring a person to divulge their tax file number to avoid tax being withheld by the Reserve Bank on changeover.

Australia's missing $100 bills could be being stockpiled by criminals or those seeking to avoid taxes, an expert says, as momentum to axe high-denomination bills builds worldwide.
The Reserve Bank's website says there are 300 million $100 notes in circulation.....However, the $100 bill is rarely seen.
Swinburne University adjunct professor in marketing Steve Worthington said speculation was rife $100 bills, which are rarely stocked in ATMs, were being used for tax evasion and crime.
"The RBA is printing a lot more $100 notes than are out there, so one must speculate they're either being hoarded by people to avoid paying tax or by criminals to store wealth," he said.
