Gold basic fundamental::: NO DEMAND!!!!!!!!!!

RF - have a care there - the miners will expand supply (if possible) to take advantage of "irrational" price - demand will increase as the "irrational" price increases -- unlike oil, gold has no utility price and doesn't get consumed so it's priced on a belief system

Thus gold can rise as long as the rubes "Believe"

Much of what was said in the RBNZ statement could apply to Australia as well.
1. Global growth applies just as well to resource commodities. Iron ore fell; back yesterday following Monday's spectacular rise, although gas seems buoyed presently.
2. While still maintaining a reasonable lrevel of immigration it's not as high as it was during the commodity boom.
3. The TWI and the AUD/USD are both higher than where the RBA would like.
4. House price is moderating in the markets that matter - Sydney and Melbourne. There are a significant number of apartments nearing completion that will hit the market over the next two years that will dampen prices.
Inflation is low and lies below the Bank's range. Petrol is prices while having risen from extreme lows of a fortnbight ago are still very low.
5. Most market commentators still look for a cut to the cash rate.

Aussie may have got a little beyond itself maybe today's cut win NZ will bring forawrd a reality check. Must admit I thought we were heading for 77/78 US cents beforehand.

JP - this gets complicated but bear with me -- for the last few election cycles Republican candidates have bent to the Conservative dogma in the primaries but had to swing back to the center in the general election (leading to cries of Foul) -- so betrayal has led to an abandonment of the Conservative "establishment" --- the Survivor candidate is Kasich not Cruz (VERY conservative) -- the Great Unwashed are rising against the OWB (older wiser and better folks) who think they know better

Having documented the unprecedented shortage of underlying 10Y paper as a result of record low repo rates which have been at "fails" for the past week, everyone was anxiously awaiting today's 10Y auction to see just how the market would soak up today's $20 billion in 10 year paper. And the answer, somewhat surprisingly, was lousy because traditionally when there is a massive, and in this case record, short overhang, the auction tends to price through the when issued.

Bottom line, whether the result of the overnight fireworks in the Japanese bond market, or some still unknown reason, today's auction was a dud.

Which brings up the next question: now that the 10Y is over, will the issue drop back to 0% in repo, or will the shortage persists with ongoing near-fails rates, and if so, just who is it that continues to press for higher yields?

Gold has no market, except maybe some bullion banks.

The public: No money to buy it, + a lot of alternatives for the ladies to look better at much lower prices.

The Swiss were smart enough to reject increasing their bullion holdings.

Except New-Rich-primitives, and mountain people in the remote Himalayas+ Bullion banks, no others have too much interest.

Some crazy people talk gold to 8000$/Oz.

With little industrial use, it is a metal being mined from one underground hole, to be placed in another underground hole.

The simple common sense says: Stop mining it!!!

The only way to promote holding gold and convince stupid people to keep it, is by terrorizing them with doomsdays horror stories about the end of the world.

All the loud talkers of gold to thousands per ounce, are propaganda boys of a despaired gold mining industry

Gold bugs scaring people into buying gold, should be declared members of Terror Organizations!!!

Hackers stole $100 million from the account of Bangladesh's central bank at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York last month, laundering the purloined funds through Sri Lankan banks and casinos in the Philippines.

Bangladesh officials are blaming the New York arm of the U.S. central bank for allowing the transfer to go through and on Tuesday threatened to sue, but are also reportedly investigating whether the theft was an inside job by employees who had access to the proper transfer codes. The Fed has denied that its systems were hacked.

The money was moved out of the Bangladesh bank's account on Feb. 5 using the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication system, known as SWIFT, which is one of the secure messaging platforms used to transmit money transfers around the world between banks.

Fed officials haven't said much other than to deny any breaches at their end. "There is no evidence of attempts to penetrate Federal Reserve systems and no evidence Fed systems were compromised," the bank said in a statement on its official Twitter account.

Imho it is mathematically impossible the European inflation is lower than US inflation. Every price in Europe has been rising faster than in USA partly because of the higher dollar, partly because of rising VAT and other taxes .

DJ Dollar Weakens After Inventory Data Boosts Oil -- Market Talk

11:40 ET - The dollar lost ground against the euro, reversing earlier gains, after US government data showed that demand for gasoline and diesel fuel was higher than expected, prompting a rally in oil prices. Oil and the dollar tend to move inversely. In recent trade, the euro was up nearly 0.2% against the dollar to $1.1017. "The catalyst happened to come from the energy markets," TD Securities says. Earlier, the euro was weaker against the dollar as investors looked to the European Central Bank's policy meeting this week, where additional stimulus measures are expected. DJ Wholesale Inventory/Sales Ratio at 7-Year High -- Market Talk

10:04 ET - US wholesale inventories surprisingly rose 0.3% in January as sales plunged, pushing the inventory-to-sales ratio to its highest level since April 2009 at 1.35. The metric measures how many months it would take to sell stockpiles at current sales pace, and the increase suggests wholesalers may try to empty warehouses rather than place new orders near-term. Much of January's ratio rise was in autos, a sector with strong recent demand and traditionally higher inventories, and petroleum--a commodity battered by overproduction. But paper, pharmaceuticals and farm products also saw big inventory growth. ([email protected])

Goldman doubles down on calls to short the euro ahead of ECB

Goldman’s economists have called for a 10 basis-point deposit-rate cut, and for the central bank to increase its monthly asset purchases by €10 billion. But Brooks believes the ECB will go even further — possibly cutting its deposit rate by 20 basis points or more while committing hundreds of billions of additional euros to its program of monthly asset purchases.

The Goldman team has stood by its call for the euro to hit parity with the dollar even as many other strategists have backed away from that view over the past six months.

Goldman’s current forecasts put the euro at 95 cents in 12 months.

Setup for ECB depends on market reaction to "disappointment" - last time EUR jumped but it would be a bit unusual to react the same way twice (if Draghi wants a 1.07 EUR he may see this too)

what Draghi can do while the major drive is ro 'sustain' social rest?

with the holy ratio:
10% untouchable because they are financially poor
80% keeping paying taxes for everybody and without any time either energy left to make any change
9% untouchable because their assets keep the balance
1% controls the masses narrative and for themselves they can anywhere and they can anything as they wish

so, what Draghi can actually do?

  • Tomorrow's ECB policy decision remains the headline event of the week. A break in EURUSD to below 1.10 today could be in anticipation of ECB ease. While President Draghi is expected to make a dovish presentation, many fear his actions will not measure up to his rhetoric.
  • Street expectations are for the central bank to cut the Bank Deposit Rate by another 10bps to -0.40%, and possibly increase its bond purchases (QE).
  • Central bank policy decisions are due over the day from the Bank of Canada and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. No rate changes are seen from either. Both are expected to maintain a dovish tone to their policy statements.

This Is the Real Point of Europe’s Negative Rates

A pickup in inflation is needed to see Europe escape its debt burden

By
Paul J. Davies and
Richard Barley
March 8, 2016 8:23 a.m. ET

Banks and insurers don’t like it, borrowers are seeing little or no benefit from it and savers and pensioners fear their money is being eaten away by it: The policy of negative interest rates is as unpopular as it is mysterious.

The European Central Bank looks likely to cut rates further into negative territory this week and yet no-one really knows exactly how it is supposed to help.

"Expectations for more ECB action are high

The ECB is widely expected to announce additional policy measures tomorrow, including another cut in its overnight deposit facility rate (also used as the reference rate for Eurozone banks’ excess reserves). The Bloomberg-compiled economists’ consensus expects a rate cut to -0.4%, from -0.3%. At the same time, German debt markets imply a cut by up to 30 basis points, if we look at the dif-ference between two-year bond yield and the ECB policy rate (chart on the left below).
By contrast, the euro has been relatively stable by comparison this year (chart on the right), perhaps implying a smaller move, while equities have rallied recently, implying a larger move. The bottom line is a significant move has most likely been already priced in some segments of the financial markets. The ECB is hence more likely to underwhelm tomorrow, at least in the short term.

However, markets may also shift focus to any other, accompanying measures the ECB might announce tomorrow."

USD/JPY - ...... Dollar met renewed selling at 112.76 just ahead of Tokyo open and then fell 1 tick below yesterday's low at 112.42 (New York) as renewed weakness in the Nikkei at the open (currently down 267 points at 16515) following o/n decline in the Dow triggered more yen-buying on risk aversion.

Although the pair has staged a minor recovery on lack of follow-though selling, as Asian bourses are in the red, suggesting selling the greenback on recovery is still favoured. Offers are tipped at 112.75/85 and more above with stops reported above 113.30.
Initial bids are noted at 112.45-40 with some stop touted below 112.10.
As no major U.S. economic data are due out later today, traders will take cue from intra-day performance of European and U.S. stocks.
