Don't Fight The Fed

nh the odds-on-favorite is that the FED is more likely to intensify its interference in an attempt to prevail than it is likely to fold.

It has a bunch of non-negligible powerful tools the market does not:
- exclusive privilege to print
- genuflecting MSM to aid in its spread of propaganda
- legislative power and
- backed by physical power of the state

Livingston nh 21:15 GMT April 14, 2016
Don't Fight The Fed

jp - first, the primary rule in cross-examination is "NEVER ask a question unless you know the answer" - I know what it would look like

second, the "market" will gobble up anything that is profitable -- when the Fed stubborness interferes
with market reality (aka inflation) then the Fed will fold

Mtl JP 21:06 GMT April 14, 2016
Don't Fight The Fed

nh u would trust something the FED publishes ?
seriously ?
-
There is only one way to trade off the FED:
by assessing how the market trusts what the FED "communicates" and then betting on how the market will react to it. Sometimes it may matter how the FED reacts to player reaction, whose severity / draconianism can never be under-estimated.

It is not what the FED says that matters.
What matters is how the market gobbles it up.

Maybe the FOMC could publish a chart showing any 10 yr periods since WWII that inflation has been at or below 1.8% - the performance of 10 yr treasuries for the last 70 years in the periods that inflation has been above those levels mighte iformative

Don't Fight The Fed

John - the risk I see is that she and her cohorts have danced around the inflation issue by saying they can tolerate a higher than 2% benchmark -- but they don't say how high -- now despite her sophomoric presentation on inflation last Fall inflation comes in different flavors and destructive effects based on the current economic environment -- comparison to year ago levels is like epidemic planning that ignores recent growth rates

There was a time when WAGE and PRICE controls were introduced @ 4% after a long period of benign inflation -- of course, the next King might think this time its different

John - up until the SPEECH fed funds were trying to deal w/ data (as in DEPENDENT) -- Yellen has made it clear that she has final say on what the "Data Means" to her - so mere mortals have no basis to judge other than she is a confirmed DOVE -- so no hikes until somebody takes her on (market, politicians or peers)

Trading Themes --
  • Crude Oil prices are off their overnight lows. The major event at hand is the OPEC meeting over the weekend in Doha. Markets have already priced in a reported agreement between Russia and Saudi Arabia to cap oil production. Speculation about a production cut has been knocked down by the Saudi Oil Minister. The global economy will remain over- supplied oil after the meeting. Markets continue to keep close tabs on prices.

  • Higher oil prices and some better data have been giving equity markets a boost. The USDJPY has stabilized due in part higher equity prices. Keep in mind there is a close correlation between the two markets. Traders are also sensitive to recent threats by Japanese authorities to intervene to contain the strength of the currency.

  • Headline Australian Employment improved as expected in March. However a look deeper into the data showed that full-time jobs had actually fallen -8.8k in the month, while all the increase came from a 34.9K increase in part-time employment. This was a disappointing report.

USD/JPY - ...... Although the greenback retreated from 109.02 in Wednesday's New York morning after downbeat U.S. retail sales data, price climbed marginally higher above 109.39 (Europe) to 109.41 later in the day, then 109.49 in Tokyo morning on Thursday before easing.

Today's focus for the greenback will be on the release of inflation data from U.S. in New York morning.
Market expects the inflation in U.S. in March to turn back into positive territory to +0.2% from -0.2% in preceding month but core CPI to drop slightly to 0.2% from 0.3% in Feb. Having said that, investors should also pay attention to the U.S. jobless claims (12:30GMT) and speeches from Fed's Lacker and FOMC member Powell at 14:00GMT.

At present, bids are reported at 109.20-10 and more at 109.00-108.90 with mixture of bids and stops in 108.80-108.60 region.
On the upside, offers are noted at 109.50-60 and more at 109.70-80 with stops above 110.00.
