  • The Bank of Japan shocked the markets early Thursday by keeping policy steady. It had seemed like a sure thing after odds for additional BOJ ease increased after the recent earthquakes in southern Japan. All I can say is it appears that the BOJ has thrown in the towel. Everyone knows that NIRP does not work and nobody knows that better than the BOJ. After all, they invented QE. On top of all this Japanese CPI turned negative in March.

  • Markets are still attempting to sort out the unexpected Bank of Japan lack of stimulus earlier today. It seems that whenever Japan is hit with uncertainty that the first action by investors is to repatriate funds back home. As a result, the JPY gained about 3% afterwards. We cannot document it, but assume that the Bank of Japan has been in over the day trying to put a floor under the USDJPY.

  • The Fed policy decision this Wednesday was to keep rates key steady as broadly expected. However the removal of of the reference to global economic events has been taken as a sign that the risk of a rate hike has risen. No specific guidance for the June meeting, which includes a press conference with the Fed Chair, was forthcoming.

For those of us who did not get caught in the BoJ earthquake it is business as usual. For those and assume there were many) who got caught wrong footed by betting on the BoJ to ease it is like getting caught in an earthquake.

The move in USDJPY from high to low was 3.5%, a big FX move over time but a mammoth move in a matter of hours(JPY crosses had huge moves as well). Markets don't move this way when they get it right so while it seems like business as usual for many of us, it is not for those who have to dig out of the rubble.

Keep that in mind as we head into month end tomorrow where Asia will be thinned by a holiday in japan. UK and China are closed on Monday and Japan is closed Tues-Thurs for Golden Week.

USD/JPY - ...... Despite dlr's volatile swings in post-FOMC New York session, price found renewed buying at 111.08 and later climbed above o/n New York high of 111.75 to 111.86 in Tokyo morning on Thursday due to renewed broad-based gain in usd.

Today's focus for the greenback will be on the release of U.S. GDP, PCE n weekly jobless claims at 12:30GMT.
Market expects the U.S. economy to slowdown to 0.7% in Q1 compare to 1.4% in previous quarter.
Meanwhile, forecast for the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week is to be 260K compare to previous reading of 247K.

At present, bids are noted at 111.60-50 and then 111.40-30 with stops below 111.20, whilst offers are noted ahead of Monday's 3-week peak at 111.91 with stops above there, however, selling interest from various accounts is tipped at 112.00-20 region.

The problem I have with calculating a rally is where do you start.
Do you begin when the euro was launched i.e. 1.1686, or from its lowest level 0.84 or the highest 1.60 as you have done.
If you take a start being the lowest and calculate the move to the high then that's a rally of 90%.
On the other hand a move from the launch to today's level is only 3.1%.

Any thoughts on the BoJ meeting? Conspiracy theory says price action ahead of it suggests someone has the inside scoop, which would be typical of Japan Inc.

Only question is whether we see a repeat of last time the BoJ surprised the market and cut rates to negative, USDJPY up 1 Yen and then down 10 big figures. This time surprise would be no change.
