Trading Themes --
  • Trade in the USD continued to be subdued Monday to start the new week after the poor U.S. jobs data last Friday, which just about completely removed the market odds of Fed rate hike in June.

  • A threat of forex intervention by a top Japanese official in Japan gave USDJPY a strong lift in trading on Monday.

  • Large fires in the Alberta oil sands region of Canada persist and could drag on for a good while longer. No fundamental lasting impact is seen once they are extinguished. WTI closed lower.

Obama's TTIP
Reply
On May 7th, Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten, or German Economic News, headlined, "USA planen mit TTIP Frontal-Angriff auf Gerichte in Europa” or “U.S. Plans Frontal Attack on Europe’s Courts via TTIP,” and reported that, “America’s urgency to sign TTIP with Europe has solid reason: Megabanks must protect themselves from claims by European investors who allege that they were cheated during the debt crisis. … The U.S. Ambassador to Italy has now let the cat out of the bag on this — probably unintentionally.”

............................
Under TTIP, a megabank fined this way might in turn sue the nation’s taxpayers to restore the megabank’s ensuing loss of profits. If the cheated investors win, taxpayers might thus end up bearing the cheated investors' losses.

TTIP Necessary So As To Protect Megabanks From Prosecution

Meanwhile an explosive situation is developing in the race for the vice-presidency, where Marcos son is leading with an uncomfortable margin(39000 votes) over the next runner Maria Roberdo.

If Marcos loses, and Duterte may be served summon for investigation(now can be understood why he prefers to wait in the forest hehehe), that means Maria may become the next president.
And...Chaos may break out.

USD/JPY - 107.57
Despite last Tuesday's resumption of recent downtrend to a fresh 18-month trough at 105.55 in European session, subsequent strong rebound to 107.50 last Thursday and intra-day breach of this level suggests a temporary bottom has been made and consolidation with upside bias would be seen for gain towards 107.90/00.
However, resistance at 108.73 would remain intact and bring another fall later.

On the downside, only below 106.13 would confirm aforesaid recovery has ended and turn outlook bearish for a re-test of 105.55, break would extend Medium Term downtrend to 105.05/10.

Trading Themes --

  • Trade in the USD continues to be subdued after the poor U.S. trade data last Friday, which just about completely removed the market odds of Fed rate hike in June. Some feel that the central bank is unlikely to change rates in the pre-election period, so the longer they wait, the greater the odds are of no change until yearend.

  • The April non-farm Payrolls report on Friday fell short of market expectations withh jobs increasing only by +160K in the month vs. expectations for a gain in excess of +200K. Average hourly earnings (after revisions) also disappointed the those optimistic on the economy.

  • Large fires in the Aberta oil sands region of Canada persist and have some worried about near term oil production. No fundamental lasting impact is seen once they are extinguished. WTI is up modestly.

USD/JPY - ...... The greenback found renewed support in New Zealand and gained in Australia, hitting session high at 107.63 at Tokyo open due to the initial rise in Nikkei-225.
However, profit-taking there capped current rise and pressured the pair lower.

Since there is no major data due from U.S. today, Asian and European traders will continue to focus on Friday's jobs report and the implications it would have on the upcoming FOMC meeting.

Bids are now seen at 107.20/30 and more below at 107.00/10 with stops building up above there whilst initial offers are noted at 107.90/00, suggesting near term upside bias remains, hence buying on dips is favored.
