Trading Themes --
  • The USD gained Tuesday on the back of an unexpectedly strong New Home sales Report. Usually this report is not closely followed. Some feel the Fed could use the data as a pretext to hike rates in June or July, conditions permitting. The EURUSD finally is closing back below the psychological 1.1200 line. The EUR is lower on its crosses.

  • The GBP gained on mounting speculation that the Brexit referendum is likely to go down to defeat on June 23. Some still doubt that view. The AUD weakened on mounting speculation about an imminent RBA interest rate cut.

  • The German ZEW Survey came in mixed for the second straight month with the "Current Situation" improving but "Expectations" were weak.

  • Interest is growing in a scheduled speech by Fed Chair Yellen at Harvard Friday at 17:15 GMT. The hope is she will clarify the outlook for Fed policy heading into the long U.S. weekend.

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. New Homes Sales Beat Estimates

The key here is the agency doing the reporting

The Census Bureau collects new home sales...........A Gov Agency
VS
Existing home sales data are provided by the National Association of Realtors.....

draw yr own conclusions.

dc CB 16:20 GMT May 24, 2016
BREAKING NEWS: U.S. New Homes Sales Beat Estimates

The Census Bureau collects new home sales based upon the following definition: "A sale of the new house occurs with the signing of a sales contract or the acceptance of a deposit." The house can be in any stage of construction: not yet started, under construction, or already completed. Typically about 25% of the houses are sold at the time of completion. The remaining 75% are evenly split between those not yet started and those under construction.

Existing home sales data are provided by the National Association of Realtors®. According to them, "the majority of transactions are reported when the sales contract is closed." Most transactions usually involve a mortgage which takes 30-60 days to close. Therefore an existing home sale (closing) most likely involves a sales contract that was signed a month or two prior.

Given the difference in definition, new home sales usually lead existing home sales regarding changes in the residential sales market by a month or two. For example, an existing home sale in January, was probably signed 30 to 45 days earlier which would have been in November or December. This is based on the usual time it takes to obtain and close a mortgage.e year the house was built or the year after it was built.

DJ Mortgages Drive Americans' 1Q Debt Growth -- Market Talk

11:15 ET - The New York Fed says US household debt rose $136B in 1Q to $12.55T, with mortgage balances up $120B in the period and student-loan debt up $29B. Meanwhile, credit-card and home-equity balances declined slightly. Overall the picture is steadily improving as delinquency rates are at their lowest level since 2007, suggesting the new debt accumulation is mostly healthy for a growing economy. But money owed on student loans continues to hit quarterly records; the total is now $1.26T. And while delinquencies eased to 11% from 4Q's 11.5%, don't take much comfort in the decline. The New York Fed says 1Q's read is "likely to understate effective delinquency rates because about half of these loans are currently in deferment, in grace periods or in forbearance and therefore temporarily not in the repayment cycle." Finally, adding fabricated data insult to intellectual injury, we learn that Americans - the same consumers who according to recent retail data are loath to even go out and buy clothes - rushed out to buy new homes in the month when the median new home sale price just hit an all time high of $321,100.

"The high level of non-performing loans remains one of the biggest problems for the euro zone economy and the European Central Bank is working on new proposals to speed up their resolution, ECB supervisory chief Daniele Nouy said on Tuesday.

Battling the legacy of its debt crisis, euro zone banks still hold around 900 billion euros of non-performing loans, limiting their ability to extend fresh loans and holding back growth. "

Imho the solution for a nonperforming loan is very easy . You have to write it down and if you after that dont have enough capital you either raise capital or go bankrupt .

French police break up refinery blockade in anti-reform showdown

French riot police broke up a strike picket at an oil refinery near the southern port of Marseille on Tuesday in a government versus union showdown over unpopular labour law reforms.

Police fired tear gas and water canon at protesters outside Exxon Mobil Corp's Fos-Sur-Mer refinery and terminal after scores of fuel stations ran dry and the government warned the CGT its industrial action would not be tolerated.

ZEW Outlook Falls Unexpectedly in May, Current Conditions Up

By Steven Arons

FRANKFURT (MNI) - Germany's benchmark investor sentiment index declined unexpectedly in May, the ZEW Institute said Tuesday, snapping a two-month streak of consecutive increases.

The headline expectations component of the indicator fell to 6.4 points in May from 11.2 in April, the ZEW said, while the median estimate from analysts polled by MNI had anticipated a rise to 12.8 points. None of the surveyed economists had expected a contraction.

The current conditions index rose, however, snapping a streak of two consecutive declines and improving sharply to 53.1 from a tally of 47.7 in April, well above the MNI median forecast of 49.7 points.

"The strong growth in the first quarter of 2016 probably surprised the financial market experts," said ZEW President Achim Wambach Steffen in a statement published shortly after the release. "But a further improvement of the situation is not to be expected in their view."

"Uncertainties such as a potential Brexit do not allow for a more optimistic outlook," Wambach added.

AceTraderFx May 24: Intra-Day Market Moving News and Views (USD/JPY)
Reply
24 May 2016 02:00GMT

USD/JPY - ...... Dlr is nursing loss in subdued Tokyo morning after yesterday's intra-day selloff from 110.24 (AUS) to as low as 109.11 in 'delayed' reaction to weekend's warning issued by U.S. to Japan on yen-intervention to weaken the yen.
Although dlr tumbled to session low of 09.11 in New York after tripping stops below 109.33 (European low), short-covering (profit-taking) lifted price back to 109.41 in Asia, suggesting choppy trading above said New York low would continue before decline from Friday's 3-week top at 110.59 resumes later today.

Offers are tipped at 109.55/65 and more above with stops reported above 110.00, initial bids are noted at 109.20-10 with stops below 109.00.

Later today, U.S. will release Redbook retail sales, then Market mfg PMI, new home sales data n Richmond Fed mfg shipment index during New York morning session.

Forex Forum

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.

FX Trading

Global-View also offers a full fx trading chart gallery that includes fx pairs, such as the EURUSD, commodities, stocks and bonds. In a fx trading world where markets are integrated, the chart gallery is a valuable trading tool. Look for updates on the Forex Forum when the chart gallery is updated.

Forex Blog

Global-View.com also offers a forex blog, where articles of interest for currency trading are posted throughout the day. The forex blog articles come from outside sources, including forex brokers research as well as from the professionals at Global-View.com. This forex blog includes the Daily Forex View, Market Chatter and technical forex blog updates. In additional to its real time forex forum, there are also Member Forums available for more in depth forex trading discussions.
