BREAKING NEWS

The RBNZ's Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) this morning held the OCR at 2.25% and retained an easing bias, signalling one more cut to come via the 90d interest rate forecast which was unchanged.

The overall economic assessment was slightly more positive than April's. The market reacted as we would have expected, the NZD and NZ interest rates higher.

BREAKING NEWS

RBNZ says the kiwi is too strong and leaves the door open to a future rate cut.

GVI 21:23 GMT June 8, 2016
BREAKING NEWS

Official Cash Rate unchanged at 2.25 percent

Statement by Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler:
The Reserve Bank today left the Official Cash Rate unchanged at 2.25 percent.

Global financial market volatility has abated and the outlook for global growth appears to have stabilised after being revised down successively over recent quarters. There has been a modest recovery in commodity prices in recent months. However, the global economy remains weak despite very stimulatory monetary policy and significant downside risks remain.

Domestic activity continues to be supported by strong net immigration, construction, tourism and accommodative monetary policy. The dairy sector remains a moderating influence with export prices below break-even levels for most farmers.

The exchange rate is higher than appropriate given New Zealands low export commodity prices. Together with weak overseas inflation, this is holding down tradables inflation. A lower New Zealand dollar would raise tradables inflation and assist the tradables sector.

House price inflation in Auckland and other regions is adding to financial stability concerns. Auckland house prices in particular are at very high levels, and additional housing supply is needed.

There continue to be many uncertainties around the outlook. Internationally, these relate to the prospects for global growth and commodity prices, the outlook for global financial markets, and political risks. Domestically, the main uncertainties relate to inflation expectations, the possibility of continued high net immigration, and pressures in the housing market.

Headline inflation is low, mostly due to low fuel and other import prices. Long-term inflation expectations are well-anchored at 2 percent. After falling in recent quarters, short-term inflation expectations appear to have stabilised.

We expect inflation to strengthen reflecting the accommodative stance of monetary policy, increases in fuel and other commodity prices, an expected depreciation in the New Zealand dollar and some increase in capacity pressures.

Monetary policy will continue to be accommodative. Further policy easing may be required to ensure that future average inflation settles near the middle of the target range. We will continue to watch closely the emerging flow of economic data.

so I tot I d waylay the RBNZ cretins rate release. DUH !
15 seconds to the release I activate my trading robot and it plants a pending short nzdusd order. exactly top of hour price shoots uP - no ticket.

so I try to cancel my robot's pending order. here is what happens next:

I can' t cancel my ticket as a message saying "market is closed" pops up instead.

so I am thinking to self : "weird... my dealer accepted a pending short nzdusd but now that I didn't get a ticket and want to take off the pending ticket getting a message that "market is closed" . wonder if I missed some notice about far east trading hours ?

so I get on the chat and ask the dealer:

Dealer says: "We just had the 5 minute rollover period that occurs each day on our forex pairs, it will show "market is closed" during those five minutes, but trading is open again"

and further comments

"The timing of the RBNZ news release is not a good one for traders as banks around the world are observing rollover and liquidity is not available during that time".

Bottom Line
read the fine print of Market Open Hours.

Trading Themes --
  • Fed Funds Futures prices continue to inch higher as perceptions grow that the timing a Fed tightening is moving later. The yield on the 10-yr Note continues to hold the psychological 1.70% line. A break into the 1.60%'s could be taken as a bad omen for the economy. Monetary policy now is certainly data-dependant.

  • Crude oil prices remain persistently high and last were above the $51.00 level. Worries about production disruptions repotedly are behind the price rise, despite large amounts of oil in storage. Equities are seeing mixed influences.

  • Mixed messages from U.K. polls ahead of the Brexit referendum on Thursday June 23 are keeping the GBP in play. Polling data remain volatile and put the outcome in pretty much a dead heat. Some warn that a number of the pollsters have an agenda and that results should be viewed in that light.

  • This a very light week for major U.S. data. Fed officials are now into their quiet period ahead of the next Fed meeting on Wednesday, June 15.

John - unfortunately the Fed has been guided by this risk but failed to correct it (yesterday's post from FTAlphaville re: ECB buying) - every time Bernanke/Yellen found an excuse to maintain "emergency" rates (or worse QE###) instead of normal the hole got deeper -- there has been a scramble to paydown/recast dollar denominated loans in EM (see china) but Yellen trying to give them more time just exacerbates the problem

But once again the biggest action was in the internals, where Indirects Took down a whopping 73.6%, higher than last month's 73.5% and the highest on record. Directs were left with 7.2%, the lowest since last August, while Dealers ended up with only 19.2% of the issue.

Trading Themes --
  • The EURUSD has crept higher as Fed Funds Futures prices inch higher as perceptions grow that the timing a Fed tightening is moving later. The yield on the 10-yr note has eased as well to a hair above 1.70%. Policy now is certainly data-dependant.

  • Nevertheless, crude oil prices remain persistently high and last were at the $51.00 level. Equities are seeing mixed influences, with high valuations a worry which is being mitigated by the prospect of continued Fed accommodation.

John, using the 4 hr chart I go back to 3/31/16 - 4/13/16 time frame when the EURUSD traded 1.1317-1.1466. This time 1.1457 serves as R1 on a weekly chart , which I believe will break, eventually, opening up a move to the 100wk mva at 1.1520 or R2 at 1.15530. Will look to sell EUR at 1.1450 lightly to begin up to 1.1520. Otherwise buy dips against 1.1280

USD/JPY - ....... Although the greenback found renewed buying at 107.50 in Europe yesterday n rose marginally above Asian high at 107.89 to 107.90, price pared its gains and tumbled to 107.15 in New York morning on yen's broad-based strength.
Dlr met renewed selling at 107.45 in New York afternoon and fell sharply at Tokyo open, hitting a low at 106.85 in Tokyo morning on yen strength as Japan's GDP data was revised upwards.

As there is no major eco. data due from U.S. today, range trading is likely to be seen with offers noted seen at 107.20/30 and more above at 107.40/50 with stops building up above there whilst initial bids are noted at 106.20/30.
