Paperback

"The Last Election" is a distopian, political novel set in some unspecified future in London. Some critics have called it satire, others a thriller. In this future England, the Money Party reigns over the political scene, and they control pretty much everything, including the media. The Money Party tells everyone, "We're doing very well" - positive messages tend to keep the population from dwelling on the negative. The Money Party strongly supports the service sector b/c in this future state, people have been replaced by machines or by outsourcing because it is cheaper to do so. Money is not tied to goods but exchanges hands electronically. Disappointing to the Money Party, the population is largely jobless and therefore has copious amounts of freetime. The young cannot find jobs and are on welfare. They spend their time in dance clubs, doing drugs and drinking. There are 13 million OAP's (old age pensioners) collecting money from the government. The global economy is pumping less oil b/c there's too much of it, so the price has gone down. Therefore, there is less money to spend on public works like roads and hospitals.
The main characters are Wally Wasted, a bitter but beloved television personality w/ weak moral fiber; Grief, a very popular and rich nightclub owner and drug distributor; Bludge, a good cop; Milla, a closet People Party supporter and creative ad woman working for the Money Party; Moses, a chemist and designer of drugs; Crinkly, re-election campaign manager of the Money Party
B/c those with jobs are so lucky to have them, our characters often find themselves stuck w/ jobs that lean towards the immoral. Moses' job is to create ever-cheaper drugs for all the oldies; because he is driven by the desire to medicate to forget or to escape his life, these drugs often have a secondary aim: to get people high. In our story, Moses creates a new drug to devastating effects; b/c of the spin the government takes on this drug, our protagonists are finally triggered to do something drastic about their society and the direction it is headed

REVEALED: Merkel NEEDS free trade deal with UK or 750,000 German jobs could face the axe
Reply
This is a piece worth reading.
ANGELA Merkel will have to agree to a free trade deal with an independent United Kingdom because 750,000 jobs rely on cross-Channel exports, a senior economics analyst has warned.
By NICK GUTTERIDGE
PUBLISHED: 05:32, Fri, Jul 1, 2016 - UPDATED: 08:10, Fri, Jul 1, 2016
Marc Biese urged German politicians to think about the vast economic benefits of close ties with Britain as the cavernous trade deficit between the two countries was laid bare.
He further highlighted the growing split between Berlin and Paris over how to deal with post-Brexit Britain, accusing the hardline French government of trying to scupper talks in its own interests - something which would deeply damage the German economy.
Germany exports to the UK are more than double the value of those heading in the other direction, with British customers acting as a lifeline for crucial industries including car manufacturing on which its economies relies.
Figures from the German government show last year the country sold 89 billion euros (73.5bn) worth of products to customers on our shores, whilst British industries exported just 38 billion euros (314bn) in reply.
Mr Biese, who is the chief political analyst for the broadsheet Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, said as many as 750,000 jobs could be on the line if Merkel pursues a policy of punishment towards post-Brexit UK.
In an article for the paper he warned it would be a huge mistake for European leaders to take an emotional response and attempt to kick Britain out of the bloc without a free trade deal.
..................................................
..................................................
It has also emerged that Britain is already beginning the groundwork for new free trade deals with emerging economies across the globe.
New Zealand has offered the Government the help of its expert negotiators whilst a number of countries including Australia, South Korea, Canada, India and Mexico ready to start talks.

nh- do you recall, I believe it was in the early 90's, when the GBP "devalued" and against conventional wisdom, it provided the economy with a strong stimulus?
I think that is what he is thinking now. With inflation not an issue, after being tin the "stay" camp, he is going to make the case for Brexit.

Yet another take on BREXIT
If either Labor or Liberal have a clear majority can't see any impact on the currency.
Biggest differences in policies relate to negative gearing and Labor running slight;y larger deficits over the next three years.
If, however, neither has a majority in the House of Representatives AUD will likely gap lower on Monday morning. If Labor goes into a formal coalition with Greens then that will be bad.

Yet another take on BREXIT
The Australian press titled this article from The Telegraph regarding Boris Johnson's Political assassination ny Michael Gove:
"It makes House of Cards look like Teletubbies"
Read it it left me thinking it provides the outline for the script of an excellent political movie. Much better than The Deal.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/30/how-boris-johnson-was-brought-to-his-knees-by-the-cuckoo-nest-pl/
Bill Clinton was quoted as saying if you want a friend in politics - get a dog.
Better still there's a joke thats told to new MPs. A first-timer takes his place in the chamber, and, looking across at the other benches, says to teh older MP next to him, "It's good to get a sight of the enemy."
"No dear boy, that is the opposition," his colleague says,. "You will find the enemy on this side."
How true after this week.

FOREX-Yen gains on safe-haven demand
Reply
LONDON, July 1 The yen climbed sharply against the dollar, euro and sterling on Friday, as political uncertainty and a Reuters report that the European Central Bank was not considering loosening its rules on monetary easing boosted demand for safe havens.
The euro recovered against the dollar after sources told Reuters that the ECB is not currently discussing buying government debt out of proportion to euro zone countries' shareholding in the bank, and the hurdle for abandoning this capital key is high...

- The dovish policy statement by Ban of England Governor Carney yesterday where he said that there could be an easing of BOE policy over the summer has been reverberating in global markets as many are seeing it as the first step in a new round of central bank ease. Bond yields have fallen today and equities have been given a modest boost.
- In the U.S., the equity to S&P correlation broke down over the day Thursday as crude oil fell. We will be watching this relationship closely today. The yield on the U.S. 10-yr is back down at 1.410% -6.8bps. In my opinion, any yield below 1.70% is seriously depressed.
- Canada is closed for the Canada Day holiday and the U.S. celebrates Independence Day on Monday

"The people chose, but their choice is unacceptable to the establishment which intends to substitute its choice for the peoples choice.... Consider the political establishments response to the Brexit vote. The federal election is tomorrow and the latest poll shows the Coalition and Labor running equal at 50% on a two-party preferred basis. There is a strong possibility that there may be a hung parliament due to third-parties and independents taking seats in the House of Representatives.
In South Australia the Nick Xenphon Team (NXT) has 24% of the primary vote with Labor on 26% and the Coalition on 36%. NXT are targeting five Coalition and Labor seats.
In Grey which covers almost 92 per cent of the state, an area larger than New South Wales the Liberals hold the electorate by a margin of 13 per cent, but a ReachTEL poll commissioned by Channel 7 earlier this month showed NXT leading in a two-party preferred vote.
Voters in Australia in common with the UK and the USA are despondent with the two main parties. Nick Xenophon has been a senator for over a decade during which time he has accumulated great respect from voters throughout Australia. This is the first occasion is party has competed for senate seats outside South Australia and seats in the lower house.
In the NSW seat of New England Barnaby Joyce is facing a fight to retain his seat against the independent Tony Windsor who held seat prior to the last election. Polls show Joyce leading 51%-49%.
Given the standing of the two main parties Australia could have a hung parliament after tomorrow's election a likelihood that doesn't seem to be factored in to the exchange rate.
