Trading Themes --
  • Markets remain optimistic after the faster than expected decision a new Prime Minister. Theresa May is a known quantity, having been Home Secretary. She will take office on Wednesday. Many are worried about who will been in her government and about how difficult the Brexit discusions will be once they get underway, both with the EU and in the U.K. Parliament. The GBP saw strong short-covering demand again on Tuesday.

  • Markets have been reacting strangely to proposals by Japanese PM Abe to lift the economy out of deflation via a fiscal stimulus after strong victories in weekend elections. The chatter is that Abe is putting together a USD 100bln stimulus plan. It will be announced later this month. The Nikkei has advanced on these developments and curiously the JPY has eased. My guess is that JPY weakness is more the product of an unwinding of post-Brexit flight-to-safety demand.

  • Higher global equities has seen another solid rise in the yield in the U.S. 10-yr note to above 1.50% today (last 1.52%, +8.8bp) as flight to safety demand for U.S. sovereign debt abates. Fed Funds futures odds on one rate hike this year have risen from near zero to about one in three. This week's onslaught of Fed talk continues.

API Crude Oil Inventories Could Push Crude Oil Prices Higher

By Gordon Kristopher

API crude oil inventories

On July 12, 2016, the API (American Petroleum Institute) will release its weekly crude oil inventories report. A Reuters poll estimated that US crude oil inventories fell by 3.3 MMbbls (million barrels) for the week ending July 8, 2016—compared to the previous week. The decrease in crude oil inventories will support crude oil prices. For more on crude oil prices, read the previous part of the series.

The API reported that US crude oil inventories fell by 6.7 MMbbls for the week ending July 1, 2016—compared to the previous week.

RF, the UK relatively has become a cheaper place to invest, you saw a billion pound deal announced today. In a corelated world where returns are pretty much the same everywhere, you are getting the chance to invest on the back of a deeply discounted pound. So folks are putting money to work. This is the not as bad as it seems bounce, theres a tough road ahead, meaning probably that sterling moves even lower. But longer term is a standout buy if coupled with uk asset purchases in the right areas.

MPs to debate second EU referendum after record four million people sign petition.

MPs will debate a petition calling for a second EU referendum , after it was signed by more than four million people.

The campaign is the most popular ever launched through the Government's online petitions system.

The House of Commons Petitions Committee confirmed today the petition will be put forward for debate.

It means MPs will debate a second referendum in Westminster Hall, and there will be a response from a Government minister - but it does not guarantee a re-run of the vote will happen.

“The Petitions Committee would like to make clear that, in scheduling this debate, they are not supporting the call for a second referendum.

“The debate will allow MPs to put forward a range of views on behalf of their constituents. At the end of the debate, a Government Minister will respond to the points raised.”

The petition - which was originally set up before the referendum - called for the vote to be re-run if fewer than 60% of votes called for remain or leave.

RF, you call an election if you strongly believe you can win. May doesnt know who labour is going to have as leader nor who the public really percieves her vs whoever the new labour leader will be. If you dont have a chance of winning why call and cut your term short potentially. She can simply bide her time until 2020 if necessary. If polls show her strongly in the lead and Ukip well subdued, she can call it at some point in the future, but the earliest that can happen is maybe late 2017/early 2018 call for end 2018. AT the earliest. The Brexit chips just wont fall any faster given the workload to get through.

May has said there will be no second referendum no early general election. The second is a fluid situation. She cannot be sure she will win> If/when she is sure, she will call or. The second referendum however will make you unelectable, its political suicide. Its not an emerging african country with a dictator we are talking about. You cannot go against the majority in the UK. Scotland is going to be independant and when you take out London, which lives in its own sphere, the vast majority voted to leave.

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - Britain will not rush to trigger divorce proceedings with the European Union, a leading ally of incoming Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday as David Cameron bowed out at his final cabinet meeting.

May, 59, will on Wednesday replace Cameron, who is resigning after Britons rejected his advice and voted on June 23 to quit the EU, plunging the country into political and economic uncertainty.

Arriving for the brief cabinet meeting, she waved to reporters from the doorstep of 10 Downing Street, shortly to become her home. She will face the enormous task of disentangling Britain from a forest of EU laws, accumulated over more than four decades, and negotiating new terms of trade while limiting potential damage to the economy.

Global Stocks Rally as Abe Stimulus Weakens Yen; Pound Advances --Bloomberg.com

Global stocks advanced for a fourth day and commodities rose, buoyed by the prospect of stimulus in major economies. The pound strengthened as the U.K. moved closer to getting a new leader.

Japan’s Topix index of shares capped its biggest two-day jump since February and the yen extended its biggest loss since October 2014 after an election victory for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s coalition emboldened him to step up economic support...

Sterling bounces back as markets cheer May appointment -- Reuters.com
Reply
Sterling rose along with UK government bond yields on Tuesday as the early anointing of interior affairs minister Theresa May as prime minister fed into a generally improved global mood among financial investors.

The 1.2 percent rise in the pound against the dollar put it on track for its biggest daily rise since Britain's vote to leave the European Union on June 23 drove sterling to 31-year lows...

Trading Themes --
  • Markets have turned optimistic following a faster than expected decision on naming a new Prime Minister. Theresa May is a known quantity, having been Home secretary. She will take office on Wednesday. The specific timing of action on Brexit is yet to be determined.

  • Another source of positive feelings is the pledge by Japanese PM Abe, after a solid election victory, to lift the economy out of deflation. The chatter is he is putting together s USD 100bln fiscal stimulus plan that will be announced later this month. The Nikkei has advanced on these developments and the JPY has eased.

  • Higher global equities has seen another solid rise in the yield in the U.S. 10-yr note to 1.47% today, as flight to safety demand for U.S. sovereign debt has abated. Fed Funds futures odds on one rate hike this year have risen from near zero to about one in three. This week's onslaught of Fed talk continues today.

USD/JPY - ..... Although the pair erased on/n gain in New York and retreated ahead of Tokyo open, renewed buying at 102.45 quickly lifted price and intra-day gathered momentum after penetrating o/n high of 102.89, dlr rallied to 103.29 after tripping stops above 103.00 before easing on profit taking.

Looks like range trading in in store, however, with the Nikkie clocking up another 400-point plus gain today, market's risk sentiment remains very much alive.
Furthermore, yesterday's report of ex-Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke ('Helicopter Ben') was seen visiting Bank of Japan and will also be meeting PM Abe some time today suggests something important is cooking (there is no smoke without fire).
So market is highly anticipating another round of fresh or new fiscal stimulus measure to be announced in the future, this has triggered massive long liquidation in yen against G7 currencies.

Buying dlr on dips is the way to go, some bids are noted at 102.80-70 and more at 102.50-40.
Some offers are tipped at 103.30/40 with some stops touted above there.
