“I believe the migration crisis is bringing Turkey closer to Europe,” he said."

  • Early Tuesday will see key data in the form of U.K. inflation data, which is what the Bank of England targets.

  • Also German ZEW economic Sentiment data are due. The ZEW Survey is used as one indicator of how the IFO will turn out later in the month. It is seen weaker. The U.S. will release housing Starts and Permits.

  • Equities are trading mostly higher in the U.S. once again. The instability in Turkey is already fading into the background. In the U.S., the week-long Republican convention is under way.

  • The ECB meets on Thursday. Its out of ammunition and Draghi is expected to call again for fiscal stimulus from Eurozone economies. Is anyone listening?

Three police officers shot dead in Baton Rouge, gunman killed -- Reuters.com

Three police officers shot dead in Baton Rouge, gunman killed -- Reuters.com

I was in the streets of Chicago in 1968 during the Democratic Convention. It was only a few months after Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King were shot to death. The “establishment,” as we called it back then, was all set to nominate Vice-president Hubert Humphrey who had started out in Washington as a Midwestern progressive firebrand but was now was broadly perceived by America’s hippie youth as a stooge and a sell-out to the evil forces running the Vietnam War.

I wasn’t exactly a protester, more like a proto-journalist, there to witness an epochal event. It was a wild three days with a lot of moiling in Lincoln Park and Grant Park, and finally out on Michigan Avenue the night of Humphrey’s awful apotheosis, where things got especially ugly and the tear gas canisters flew. But that was about it. Nobody got killed by the police, or vice-versa, and then we all went back to college (my SUNY school cost $500-a-year back then, by the bye). Nixon was the consolation prize.

Back then, it was in style to assassinate political leaders. Today it’s in fashion to assassinate police.

A Dark Prospect

Beijing announces S. China Sea drills, warns foreign navy patrols could end in ‘disaster’

This may end in a US provocation+ Chinese response, after which the US will try to destroy the Chinese installations on the disputed islands, and also will sabotage any attempted deal between the Philippines and china.

All that without risking a wider conflict beyond the islands.

In event like this, gold can rise.

  • Trade is off to a mixed start early Monday. Equities were mostly higher in the Far East, but are mixed in European trade. Dealers are still trying to assess the implications of the failed coup in Turkey. In the U.S., the week-long Republican convention is under way.

  • The late Friday military coup in Turkey failed. Now the EU must contend with a non-democratic and increasingly theocratic strategic partner. Longer-term this is EUR negative.

  • The ECB meets on Thursday. Its out of ammunition and Draghi is expected to call again for fiscal stimulus from Eurozone economies. Is anyone listening?

  • Another police shooting in the U.S. is is being digested. The market impact of the terrorist attack on civilians in Nice Thursday evening has waned. Unfortunately such events have become too commonplace.
