  • Equities are ending trading lower into the U.S. close. Fixed income prices are generally higher. In the U.S., the week-long Republican convention is under way. The Democrats meet next week.

  • The ECB meets on Thursday. It is out of ammunition and Draghi is expected to call again for fiscal stimulus from Eurozone economies. Is anyone listening?

  • U.S Housing Starts and Permits proved to be positive for June. However, they are running roughly at 50% of their pre-crash peak.

  • Hotter than expected U.K. inflation data gave the GBP a short-lived lift, but it quickly faded. U.K. monthly employment data are due on Wednesday.

  • Post Brexit, the German ZEW economic Sentiment data missed estimates. The ZEW Survey is used as one indicator of how the IFO will turn out later in the month.

IMF: China Exports Lowflation Through Manufacturing Capacity -- Market Talk

19 July 2016, 15:09

11:09 ET - China's excess production capacity is more than just a trade headache for the US and other markets as cheap steel and other commodities and goods undercut sales and weigh on growth. It's also undermining central bank policies around the world as China exports disinflationary pressures. "Global overcapacity in manufacturing does to some degree weigh on inflation," says IMF chief economist Maurice Obstfeld. That's one of many reasons why US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and other G-20 finance officials will press China on the issue when they meet in China later this week. ([email protected]; @iantalley)

BREAKING NEWS: German ZEW Survey Misses

"In May it was reported that Germany's government expects to spend around 93.6 billion euros by the end of 2020 on costs related to the refugee crisis. German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel cited a report it said it had seen from the German finance ministry, which detailed the costs for accommodating and integrating refugees as well as tackling the root causes for people fleeing from crisis-stricken regions.

Officials based their estimates on 600,000 migrants arriving this year, 400,000 next year and 300,000 in each of the following years, the report said, adding that they expected 55 percent of recognised refugees to have a job after five years." Telegraph

USD/JPY - 105.77.. Dlr erased intra-day gain in Asia as despite initial rise to a fresh 3-week peak of 106.33 in Australia due to return of risk sentiment following gains in the S&P and the Dow hitting record highs overnight, selloff in the antipodean currencies (aud & nzd) ahead of Asian open dampened risk appetite, leading to a broad-based liquidation of near term short yen positions, dlr fell to 105.70 before stabilising.

Looks like the daily high print is here to stay as choppy trading with downside bias is expected to take place.
Offers are tipped at 106.00/10 and more above with some stops above 106.35.
Initial bids are note at 105.70 and more below with stops touted below 105.20.

Later today, U.S. will release June housing starts and redbook retail sales data.
