  • Tuesday saw forex markets come to life after the EURUSD for a second day made no progress to the downside after the better than expected July employment data released on Friday. The data suggested that the U.S. economy is growing faster than thought. No EURUSD decline saw some of the weak shorts start to get squeezed out.

  • More data today suggested that the Chinese economy is soft with the CPI yr/yr faling to 1.80% y/y from 1.90%. The official target is 3.00% yr/yr.

  • U.K. data have been weaker than expected as well. The impact of Brexit is gradually working its way into official statistics.

US Socialism: More jobs+Less productivity+Higher hourly salary+No inflation

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has purchased a nearly $600,000 summer retreat on Vermont’s Champlain Islands, the Vermont newspaper Seven Days reported Monday.

“We’ve traveled up to the islands many times over the years — almost always on day trips,” Jane Sanders, the former White House contender's wife, said in a statement. "The entire family is very excited about it.”

“We’ve always been impressed with the North Hero community, eaten at the North Hero House and Shore Acres and have suggested them to friends who were looking for a beautiful place to stay or have dinner. St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte is my favorite church and it is nearby.”

The Sanders’ new waterfront home has four bedrooms and 500 feet of Lake Champlain beachfront, Seven Days reported.

The town of North Hero has fewer than 1,000 residents, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Policy makers in Europe and Japan have turned to negative rates to stimulate their lackluster economies. Yet, instead of opening their wallets, many consumers and businesses are squirreling away more money. Recent economic data show consumers are saving more in Germany and Japan. In Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden, three non-eurozone countries with negative rates, savings are at their highest since 1995. Companies in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Japan also are holding on to more cash. Tumbling interest rates are also motivating companies and government agencies to “call” bonds at the fastest pace in four years, taking advantage of provisions that let them redeem securities under certain circumstances and save money by reissuing at lower rates.

The signal to the consumer is that something is wrong—it’s a crisis measure,” says Carl Hammer, chief currency strategist at Swedish bank SEB.

Lasse Bohman, a 63-year old newsstand worker from Stockholm, said the concept of negative interest rates is “weird” and makes him want to save more for retirement rather than spend. “I am just going to keep on putting money in the bank,” he says, or “put it under the mattress at home.”

In Germany, Europe’s largest economy and a nation known for thrift, savings as a percentage of disposable household income rose to 9.7% in 2015, according to preliminary data from the OECD. That is the highest rate since 2010, and the OECD expects the savings rate to rise further this year, to 10.4%.

Many Germans worry that negative rates pose a threat to their rainy-day funds. Four in 10 Germans cite the ECB’s monetary policy and low interest rates as their biggest concern when it comes to savings, according to a survey by the German Savings Banks Association last October.

Japan says ties with China 'deteriorating' over disputed islands 32 minutes ago
Reply
Japan's foreign minister has warned that ties with China are "significantly deteriorating", after Chinese vessels repeatedly entered disputed waters in the East China Sea.

Fumio Kishida said he had called China's ambassador to protest against the "incursions".

On Friday, about 230 Chinese fishing boats and coast guard vessels sailed near islands claimed by both countries.

Beijing has been increasingly assertive about waters it believes are Chinese.

The Japan-controlled, uninhabited islands - known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China - are the source of a long-running dispute.

The Japanese coast guard said on Monday that about 13 Chinese coast guard ships, some of them armed, had been seen near the islands, higher than the usual number.

"The situation surrounding the Japan-China relationship is significantly deteriorating," Mr Kishida told Cheng Yonghua, Beijing's envoy to Tokyo, according to a statement on the foreign ministry website.

"We cannot accept that [China] is taking actions that unilaterally raise tensions."

EUR/USD - 1.1084
Although yesterday's intra-day sideways swings following early decline from last Tuesday's 6-week peak of 1.1234 to 1.3046 on Friday suggests initial consolidation is in store, outlook remains bearish for aforesaid fall to head to 1.1030, near term 'loss of downward momentum' should keep euro above 1.1000/05 and risk has increased for a stronger retracement later this week.

On the upside, only a daily close above 1.1114 (previous sup, now res) would bring further gain to 1.1135/40 but res at 1.1161 should remain intact.
