Pre-Opening Forex Trading Ideas for 5 Jan 2017

Forex Trading Outlook

  • The latest Fed Policy Minutes sent mixed messages. What's new? The two most salient items seemed to be that increased fiscal stimulus should cause the FOMC to raise its economic growth forecasts, but that a higher USD could be a restraint on inflation. As the dust settled, the markets seemingly were reading the statement as mildly hawkish and the USD was trading off its lows of the day.

  • A heavy flow of economic data continued today as agencies continue their catch up from the end of year holidays. Final PMI data from Europe saw some unusual improvements. Euphoria over the Trump Presidency persists. At some point market expectations will start to become more realistic.

  • The balance of the week sees more PMI data and the key employment reports from the U.S. and Canada plus a number of other items.

Goodbye to the Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Jon Stewart has faded out of sight but Tucker Carlson is out there really asking some tricky questions. Good for him.

Watch the financial market pundits tie themselves into similar knots as we go forward. Doom and gloomers are still lurking. I have seen no positive forecasts for 2017 so you have to wonder.

Universal positive calls on the USD are also out there. We are still in silly season. After the 8th of January we should see liquidity come back into the market. Meanwhile stay safe. And Happy New Year every one.

The GBP/USD pair found some support near 1.2220 region, and from there attempts another run towards the mid-point of 1.22 handle, as focus now remains on the UK construction sector activity report due later in the European session.

The cable stalled its phase of steady decline in early Asia, and looks to regain the bids amid stalled USD buying and a better risk environment amid higher Asian equities and oil prices.

On Tuesday, the major witnessed two-way trades, after a stronger UK manufacturing PMI to 1.23 handle only to meet fresh supply on the release of better-than expected US ISM manufacturing PMI data to test 1.22 barrier.

GBP/USD Levels to consider

In terms of technical levels, upside barriers are lined up at 1.2248 (daily pivot), 1.2277 (10-DMA) and 1.2298 (daily R1). While supports are seen at 1.2200 (round figure) and 1.2150 (multi-month lows) and below that at 1.2100 (zero figure).

Current exchange rate of GBP/USD is 1.2243.

Our Recommendation:
GBP/USD is going up in Forex market and it is recommended to buy.

Update Time: 04 Jan 2017 02:10 GMT

EUR/USD - 1.0400
Despite yesterday's intra-day selloff from 1.0490 at European open and then a brief break of Dec's 13-year trough of 1.0352 to 1.0341 in New York morning after upbeat U.S. data, subsequent strong bounce to 1.0433 due to broad-based profit taking in usd suggests a temporary low has been made and consolidation is in store.

Above 1.0451 (Monday's low, now res) would bring stronger correction to 1.0480/90 whilst below 1.0341 would yield marginal weakness.
However, loss of downward momentum should keep price above 1.0300 today.
