Global-View Analysis: PMIs Turning Higher
Reply
Its pretty clear that economic conditions are improving almost everywhere. The smoothed data make underlying trends clearer. We are approaching the end of the period of excessive central bank ease. Note the actual LEVELS of the PMIs (all above 50) as well as the upward slopes of the lines. Both are important. Fundamentals for Trading. EXCLUSIVE CHARTs:
PMI readings are not "hard" economic statistics. I like the smoothed manufacturing series, even in Service economies, because it is more sensitive to changes in the business cycle.

EXCLUSIVE CHART: Commodity currencies (plus China).

- No data which are likely to impact the major currency pairs are set for release on Monday. Tokyo is closed for a holiday. The U.S. then will see a number of typically low-impact trading items on Tuesday, although the JOLTS Survey is said to be closely followed by the Fed.
- One key item Monday could be any additional CNY intervention activity by the Chinese central bank, the PBOC, to combat large capital outflows. Some are blame the PBOC activity for the recent USD instability.
- The December U.S. Employment report on Friday was mixed and should have no impact on the expected future path of Fed policy. Nevertheless, it did generate the typical price volatility with the USD ending broadly higher on the day. One 25bp Fed rate hike is still priced-in by mid-year.
- The current focus of trading is more on the incoming Trump administration than the Fed. Donald Trump will be inaugurated one week for Friday, on January 20. Although a lame duck, President Obama remains active in trying to shape his "legacy" with a slew of executive orders.
