WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Wednesday that this week’s devastating chemical weapons attack in Syria had changed his view of the brutal civil war in that country, though he declined to say how the United States would respond.

Mr. Trump said the images of death inside Syria in the aftermath of the chemical attacks “crosses many lines, beyond a red line, many many lines.” And he said that the death of “innocent children, innocent babies, little babies” has made him reassess the situation and Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad.

“It’s very, very possible, and I will tell you it has already happened, that my attitude toward Syria and Assad, has changed very much,” Mr. Trump said as he stood next to King Abdullah of Jordan in the Rose Garden for a news conference with reporters.

“I think it’s going to be the biggest story,” Mr. Trump said in an interview in the Oval Office, declining repeated requests for evidence for his allegations or the names of other Obama administration officials. “It’s such an important story for our country and the world. It is one of the big stories of our time.”

He declined to say if he had personally reviewed new intelligence to bolster his claim but pledged to explain himself “at the right time.”

When asked if Ms. Rice, who has denied leaking the names of Trump associates under surveillance by United States intelligence agencies, had committed a crime, the president said, “Do I think? Yes, I think.”

On balance, Fed minutes leaned a bit to the hawkish side. There was a discussion about how to wind down the balance sheet. Gradually or abruptly. Common sense suggests they will do it cautiously and probably just let mortgage backed securities run off gradually. The last thing they woill want to do is shock the markets.

Forex Trading Outlook

Items likely to drive the FX rates:
  • EVENT RISK: Late today in the U.S. will see the FOMC meeting minutes from the October 15 FOMC meeting where it was decided to hike the Fed Funds target by 25bp. Minutes often include new news as often the Minutes are "shaped" to encompass latest developments.

  • Global Service PMIs. Eurozone Service PMIs saw some downward revisions to stromg flash data. The Service sector tends to dominate in most developed economies. The key U.S. ISM Service PMI was considerably weaker than expected.

  • The first item in the U.S. monthly employment data is the ADP private employment estimate which is based on the payroll data it actually processes. Is showed a stronger than expected gain of 263K in April (+189K expected). This compared to a revised +245K in February.

  • Then on Friday, the government releases its official jobs data. because of its detail, this is by far the most important U.S. economic report of the month. Street estimates are for a gain of 175K in the month vs. +235K in February. Odds are street estimates are too low.

  • Lots to consider. Please comment...

German lawmakers approve dual-agenda like law
Reply
REUTERS: The German cabinet approved a plan on Wednesday to fine social networks up to 50 million euros ($53 million) if they do not remove hateful postings quickly, prompting concerns the law could limit free expression.

Germany already has some of the world's toughest hate speech laws covering defamation, public incitement to commit crimes and threats of violence, backed up by prison sentences for Holocaust denial or inciting hatred against minorities.

"There should be just as little tolerance for criminal rabble rousing on social networks as on the street," Justice Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement, adding that he would seek to push for similar rules at a European level.

The issue has taken on more urgency as German politicians worry that a proliferation of fake news and racist content, particularly about 1 million migrants who have arrived in the last two years, could sway public opinion in the run-up to the national election in September.

However, organizations representing digital companies, consumers and journalists, accused the government of rushing a law to parliament that could damage free speech.

"It is the wrong approach to make social networks into a content police," said Volker Tripp, head of the Digital Society Association consumer group.

The draft law would give social networks 24 hours to delete or block obviously criminal content and seven days to deal with less clear-cut cases, with an obligation to report back to the person who filed the complaint about how they handled the case.

Failure to comply could see a company fined up to 50 million euros, and the company's chief representative in Germany fined up to 5 million euros.

Bitkom, an association which represents digital companies, said the government should build up specialist teams to monitor online content for potential infringements, rather than expect social networks to do it themselves.

"Given the short deadlines and the severe penalties, providers will be forced to delete doubtful statements as a precaution. That would have a serious impact on free speech on the internet," said Bitkom manager Bernhard Rohleder.

Since it was unveiled last month, the draft law has been amended to include new categories of content, such as child pornography. It also now allows courts to order social networks to reveal the identity of the user behind criminal posts.

To address free speech concerns, the legislation was tweaked to make clear that a fine would not necessarily be imposed after just one infraction. "It is clear that freedom of expression is of huge importance in our vibrant democracy ... however, freedom of expression ends where criminal law begins," Maas said. Maas said a government survey showed Facebook deleted just 39 percent of content deemed criminal and Twitter only 1 percent, even though they signed a code of conduct in late 2015 including a pledge to delete hate speech within 24 hours.

Fed Leak Probe Dooms Lacker But Leaves Key Question: Who Leaked?

It was a sudden career stop for a Fed president who was frequently in opposition to the Fed board consensus on interest-rate policy, and the news will likely revive questions in Congress about the value of the central bank’s discretion and transparency.

“The story is not over today,” said Andrew Levin, a professor at Dartmouth College who was previously a special adviser at the Fed board and helped then-Vice Chair Janet Yellen develop the Fed’s policy on external communication. “There are a number of distinct details that suggest that Lacker wasn’t the main source of information.”

Aaron Klein, a fellow at the Brookings Institution and the former chief economist on the Senate Banking Committee, said the Lacker statement “is not a full and complete accounting of what happened.”

  • EVENT RISK: Global Wednesday- Global Service PMIs. Eurozone Service PMIs saw some downward revisions to stromg flash data. The Service sector tends to dominate in most developed economies. It could move markets on Wednesday.

  • U.S. EVENT RISK: Wednesday and Friday: The first week of each month sees Key U.S. employment data. The first item is the ADP private employment estimate which is based on the payroll data it actually processes.

  • Then on Friday, the government releases its official jobs data. because of its detail, this is by far the most important U.S. economic report of the month.

  • Lots to consider. Please comment...

GBP/USD FOREX FORECAST
Reply

The British Pound stays almost unchanged vs. the greenback on Wednesday, taking GBP/USD to the 1.2450 region ahead of the opening bell in Euroland.

Cable is struggling for direction after losing ground for two consecutive sessions, although it seems to have found decent support around weekly lows near 1.2420 for the time being.

Absent news from the Brexit front, the broad risk appetite trends and USD-dynamics remain poised to drive the pair’s price action in the next sessions. Today’s release of UK’s Services PMI would surely collaborate with some volatility around GBP, as market consensus expects a small improvement for the month of March.

GBP/USD levels to consider
As of writing the pair is up 0.04% at 1.2446 facing the next hurdle at 1.2556 (high Apr.3) followed by 1.2598 (high Mar.28) and finally 1.2562 (high Mar.31). On the other hand, a breakdown of 1.2395 (20-day sma) would expose 1.2375 (low Mar.29) and then 1.2362 (50% Fibo of the March up move).

TREND INDEX:
Bearish

AVG SELL PRICE:
1.2410

AVG BUY PRICE:
1.2393

RECOMMENDATION:
BUY

USD/JPY - 110.73.. Dlr gains respite in Wednesday trading after having fallen sharply for 2 consecutive days this week. Despite yesterday's weakness to 110.27 at New York open, release of narrowing U.S. trade deficit triggered intra-day short covering in the greenback, price rebounded to 110.81 on broad-based yen selling, price then briefly hit a high of 110.91 ahead of Tokyo open begre retreating.

Looks like price has hit a temp. low and range trading is in store, however, reported offer at 110.90/95 should put a lid on the upside.
Bids are noted at 110.65-60 and more below with large stops touted below 110.00.

Market's focus is FOMC minutes later in the day, ahead of that, U.S. will release a slew of eco. data starting with MBA mortgage applications, then key ADP private payrolls, Markit services PMI n ISM non-mfg PMI.
