And, indeed, average hourly wage growth is accelerating. In December, wages increased by 2.7 per cent on a year-over-year basis. At the start of 2017, the country’s tepid wage growth was a concern for economists and the Bank of Canada. That worry has largely dissipated for now and a number of increases to provincial minimum wage rates will only further drive wage growth. Hourly wage growth, combined with an increase in hours worked, bodes well for incomes in the year ahead, too, even if it ultimately adds to inflationary pressures. Scotiabank, for one, changed its interest rate forecast and is now calling for the central bank to hike rates later this month.

Commitment Of Traders Report for 2 January 2017 Data
Forex trading is all about stops. The Commitment of Traders Report (COT) is an imperfect, but useful, "sampling" of market positioning. I would prefer more frequent and precise readings, but we have to live with what we get. The data work for the purpose of getting an idea if traders are positioned long or short and if they in big or small. Where and how large the stops are is critical trading intelligence.
EURUSD net long positions shot well above the old 100K ceiling in a holiday shotened week. This is a very bullish EURUSD development. The heavy blue line (once a week spots) provides a useful perspective on the price action. In the latest week closedsolidly above the psychological 1.2000 line.
As the developing alternative reserve currency twin to the USD, keep in mind EUR positions are not just against the USD. EUR crosses vs. the JPY and GBP are critical. The European economy continues to improve and that should remain a EUR positive.

From Friday's New York Times:
Cities where joblessness is 3.5 percent or lower have also witnessed an impressive 4 percent year-over-year increase in earnings, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist of Pantheon Macroeconomics.
Bob Peterson, the chief executive of Melton Truck Lines, said he had no choice but to increase pay for his 1,600 drivers this year.
“With unemployment this low, anyone worth their salt has got a job and probably a darn good one,” Mr. Peterson said. Melton operates in 48 states and has offices in five.
The tight job market has been especially tough on Mr. Peterson, because he requires a drug test for everyone who comes through the door. Many fail, especially after several states legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use.
“There’s guys and gals that like to smoke weed, but they can’t drive a commercial vehicle because it’s prohibited,” Mr. Peterson said. “Some people get here and we find out, oops, they have been smoking or injecting.”
He says he has to talk to 250 applicants to hire one employee.
