The Fed Makes a Major Monetary Policy Turn

Fed Chair Powell Signals Major Changes In Policy One Thing You can’t say about Jerome Powell is that he is not decisive. As widely expected, the Fed kept interest rates steady at its January 30 meeting. Many were predicting a dovish bias at the meeting and on this he delivered. Personally I was expecting a more neutral posture. Powell sent the message that policy is “data dependent”, but the central bank can now be patient in deciding if it needs to raise rates again...

What I think is Powell has blown a great hole in my 10 yr hence my model for Rates rates rates -- I see revenue fails in Stox which are usually corrected by SLY maneuvers in package size or in service industries w/higher fees (i.e., inflation w/ a lag) POOF!!

Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in December indicates that the labor market has continued to strengthen and that economic activity has been rising at a solid rate. Job gains have been strong, on average, in recent months, and the unemployment rate has remained low. Household spending has continued to grow strongly, while growth of business fixed investment has moderated from its rapid pace earlier last year. On a 12-month basis, both overall inflation and inflation for items other than food and energy remain near 2 percent. Although market-based measures of inflation compensation have moved lower in recent months, survey-based measures of longer-term inflation expectations are little changed.
Consistent with its statutory mandate, the Committee seeks to foster maximum employment and price stability. In support of these goals, the Committee decided to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 percent. The Committee continues to view sustained expansion of economic activity, strong labor market conditions, and inflation near the Committee's symmetric 2 percent objective as the most likely outcomes. In light of global economic and financial developments and muted inflation pressures, the Committee will be patient as it determines what future adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate may be appropriate to support these outcomes.
In determining the timing and size of future adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate, the Committee will assess realized and expected economic conditions relative to its maximum employment objective and its symmetric 2 percent inflation objective. This assessment will take into account a wide range of information, including measures of labor market conditions, indicators of inflation pressures and inflation expectations, and readings on financial and international developments.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Jerome H. Powell, Chairman; John C. Williams, Vice Chairman; Michelle W. Bowman; Lael Brainard; James Bullard; Richard H. Clarida; Charles L. Evans; Esther L. George; Randal K. Quarles; and Eric S. Rosengren.

Xcel Energy, the largest utility company in Minnesota, is urging customers to lower their thermostats to prevent natural gas shortages as a deadly arctic deep freeze enveloped the Midwest.
In a Wednesday statement, Xcel spokesperson Matt Lindstrom said extremely cold weather is causing “significant” strain on the utility giant’s natural gas system. The company is asking for residents in central Minnesota, including the areas of Princeton and Big Lake, to lower their thermostats below 60 degrees. It is unknown how many customers will be impacted by the possible shortages.
“We need those in Becker, Big Lake, Chisago City, Lindstrom, Princeton, and Isanti to reduce use of natural gas. Until further notice, you are urged to turn down your thermostat to 60 degrees or lower and avoid the use of other natural gas appliances including hot water,” Lindstrom said.
Xcel is suggesting customers use electric space heaters to heat their homes.

Will the USD trade lower ahead of the FOMC?
jp - CB has been talking about the QT schedule for months // the Balance Sheet will lose over 90 bio of Treasurys in the next 60 days or so due to maturity of the issues - all of the MBS are in the over 10 yr maturity still // it appears that the Fed is just letting Treasurys run off (but note that the OLD balance sheet had all S/T Treasurys, so there is a qualitative difference in composition that is an issue as Gov't issues more s/t paper)
Marketing of the MBS stash is more difficult, perhaps?
Livingston nh 13:20 GMT January 30, 2019
Will the USD trade lower ahead of the FOMC?
USD treading water this AM but FOMC giving away too much to market (i.e., a Pause or slowdown in balance sheet reduction) will send USD tumbling -- this is pretty much a "so what" meeting -- the data for Q4, and Jan PMI/NFP will set the tone
Mtl JP 13:04 GMT January 30, 2019
Will the USD trade lower ahead of the FOMC?
expect USD to be tilting down a bit into FOMC
and market to focus on the Fed’s balance sheet taper (or its asset de-purchase program)

I think the markets could be expecting too much of a dovish posture from the Fed this afternoon. "Patience" is the word of the day vis-a-vis the Fed.

While there has been a majority in favour of NI remaining part of the UK Brexit and ramifications of a possible hard-border may push many to vote for joining the Republic in a referendum.
Under the Westminster NI Act the Secretary of State for NI can call a referendum if he or she feels there is a likelihood of majority vote to leave the UK.
