generally, I believe that Fed officials are "expected" to steer clear of politics. Kashkari strikes me as a very political figure. He seems to have political ambitions. We will see.

The Fed is getting into fiscal and social issues in addition to their traditional roles in monetary issues.
Some background: The state of Minnesota has one of the highest educational disparity rates in the US. Simply put, the high achieving kids do well, and the low achieving kids don't.
Neel Kashkari and Alan Page (a state supreme court judge) are pushing for an amendment to the Minnesota state constitution to "require a quality education for all kids".
Practically speaking...this means a lot more money for K-12 education in the state, a special interest that already has a lot of money and IMHO wastes most of it.
The Fed is exploring social and fiscal and not just monetary issues. I can't see this turning out well. (Minnesota is already one of the highest taxed states in the country, most of it going to education.)

In essence, by intentionally missing U.S. personnel in Iraq, Iran has blinked. Now Trump has allowed this episode to go. Unless Iran acts against the U.S. again, imho this entire episode is over.
Note the 10yr note is now 1.860% +3.5bp. this is close to neutrality. The S&P 500 is back in record high territory.

Ac - Iran NEEDS to keep US in M/E but Prez seemed willing to leave (Syria pullout) -- Iran did not farm out the job to proxies because control was critical (Iran says "proportionate") and now says US must leave (the taunt Prez can't resist) so pullout looks to be meeting IRAN demands -- if no FAST and HARD response (FAST is gone so we wait to see if HARD is still in the building) we go back to "Same old same old" until the next time // Reagan had the better excuse w/ the barracks but NADA // KIM is watching

There are now many voices in Iran that prefer food over demented Ayatollahs.
It is not there yet-- but the trend is clear. We need to be patient---The religious dictators will vanish.

40 years this has been dragging on - Iran has always used proxies and hostages to attack the US (et al) but NEVER from Iran directly -- first time since Prez Eisenhower that 'proportional response' may be off the Table -- Turkey, Iraq and others have been warned today not to assist US in any way -- Europe and UK ??
