dear john,
at the last meeting, I have gone out of my way to try make it clear that we, the Fed gang, are sitting tight unless our outlook changes in some major way and that only a significant and persistent rise in inflation would would kick us out dozing in bed and run to tighten.
we are sensitive to the markets thirst for liquidity altho we try to ignore the screetching out of the W/House.
we have tried - gosh did we ever try - to make you think that when I Chairman Powell comment I do so to remind you of our prudence in sage stewardship. Please also remember that we are fans of little higher inflation for little longer ... lest you start to doubt our comittement to low rates for next while.

Truth be told, not everyone in China wants it this way...it will take a generation or two or three to be more open. Chinese kids are going out into the world, and the world is slowly going into China.

No Gov. in the world would like to hear that the infection has already spread to hundred thousand individuals.
World panic is the last thing world leaders want.
It will just put on them public pressure to take more dramatic actions against the spread of the virus. It can also have implications on the financial system.

At press time, Chinese authorities have documented 6,061 cases of coronavirus infection within its borders. Of those, 132 people have died, all within China. Scientists contend, however, that this number is significantly smaller than the actual number of people infected. Northeastern University estimates suggest that as many as 25,000 people are currently infected within China alone. University of Hong Kong�s medical school nearly doubled that amount, revealing that its mathematical estimates reveal as many as 44,000 people in China alone are carriers.

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment.
Of all of the breaches of medical ethics in history, it's hard to think of one more heinous than the "Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male," which was conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS), working with the Tuskegee Institute, from 1932 to 1972. Researchers initially recruited 600 men, including 399 who tested positive for syphilis ...
Researchers didn't tell the infected men that they had the disease or that the purpose of the study was to document how the disease destroyed their bodies. The men were only told they would receive free medical care for "bad blood," a vague term that didn't imply a specific medical condition. And even when penicillin, an effective treatment for syphilis, became available in 1947, the researchers didn't offer it to them [source: CDC]. Between 28 and 100 of the participants died from syphilis, but the death toll may have been higher, since they may have infected others unknowingly [source: Tuskegee Syphilis Legacy Committee].
The resulting outcry forced PHS to shut down the study in 1972 [source: Beech].
The following summer, the government settled a $10 million lawsuit brought by survivors and their families and provided them with lifetime medical care [source: CDC].

Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that like many things in life, the people who talk (like us and the media) don't know what's really going on, and the people who know what's really going on aren't talking. That is what happens in closed societies, where speculation isn't very enlightening. Posting videos of construction workers running around is useful for public image, but IMHO it's a little late for dealing with the current public health crisis.

"We have suspended all flights to and from mainland China with immediate effect following advice from the Foreign Office against all but essential travel," the company said in a statement Wednesday.
The UK's Foreign Office warned people against traveling to mainland China in all but essential cases on Tuesday.
It's the most drastic action yet by a major airline as the deadly coronavirus continues to spread.
Will the US follow?
