A new energy era is on the horizon. And a number of interconnected events seem to impact and mould this emerging era.
Confirming his commitment to climate change, the US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated, a person of the calibre and stature of former Secretary of State John Kerry, as the special presidential envoy on climate change.
The appointment of Kerry is significant. It reiterates the message that climate change is high on Biden’s priority list. The message is getting loud and clear, to stake holders.
Consequently, the rush to monetise the assets beneath the surface seems to gather momentum. Despite weak markets, low oil prices, and dim future projections, stakeholders are striving to pluck the low hanging fruits.
The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to increase its output capacity. The country’s top body for energy policy, Abu Dhabi’s Supreme Petro¬leum Council has approved plans to invest $122 billion in the oil and gas sector over the next five years. As per Bloom-berg, the country plans to raise its daily capacity to 5 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2030 from about 4m bpd. This is despite the fact that due to the current output constraints, UAE’s production remains capped at roughly 2.6m bpd.
Besides, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has recently announced the discovery of an additional 2 billion barrels at conventional fields. That brings the UAE’s total reserves of recoverable oil to 107bn barrels. Adnoc has also found an extra 22bn barrels of unconventional oil. This is though harder to extract and all of it may not be recoverable.
The decision by Abu Dhabi to boost spending could be a move to monetise its vast oil reserves before the expected peak in oil demand for a number of reasons, including the climate change movement taking a centre stage.
Elsewhere, Norway has also offered 136 blocks in the Arctic Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea in its latest licensing round, opening the way for a major expansion of exploration in the Arctic.
And all this is happening in a rapidly changing and challenging energy environment. Most oil producers, especially in the Gulf Arab region, are faced with immense financial pressures. In a bid to bail them out of the financial quagmire they are in, they are now turning to debt markets. Bond issues in the region have already hit US$100bn, exceeding the previous record amount of bonds issued in 2019.
In order to meet the $75bn dividend pledge to shareholders, the world’s largest and most integrated oil company Saudi Aramco had to raise $8bn last week. The slump in crude prices has caused Aramco’s profit to fall by 45pc in the third quarter, and it has little funds to meet its dividend obligations.
This was the second time in two years, that Aramco had to tap the US-denominated bond market after last year’s $12bn bond issue in its first international issuance, for which it had received more than $100bn in orders.
Major oil producer Kuwait, one of the world’s wealthiest countries is also faced with a debt crisis. As per a report by AP, this fall, the rating agency Moody’s downgraded Kuwait for the first time in its history. Kuwait’s national bank said the country’s deficit could hit 40pc of its gross domestic product this year, the highest level since the financial devastation of the 1990 Iraqi invasion and the subsequent first Gulf War.
For the first time in history, oil revenues would not cover salaries and subsidies, which have swelled since 2006 and now eat up more than 70pc of the national Kuwaiti budget. At current oil prices and spending levels, the general reserve fund will dry up by December, Raghu Mandagolathur, research director at the Kuwait Financial Center was quoted by AP as saying.
Oman and Bahrain’s finances are on a more precarious footing than those of the larger oil producers. Still have also tapped bond markets this year.
Loading on debt currently looks like the only way out of the crisis. It provides the Middle Eastern oil producers, a way to plug the shortfall without further escalating the already tough austerity measures, which could be highly unpopular in the oil monarchies, and could have political consequences.
However, the debt binge will come to an end sooner or later. And the oil producers in the region do not seem prepared to face the reality.
Monetising the assets quickly may not be the silver bullet they all are looking for.

GEORGIA. UPDATE
The prospect of Democrats regaining control of the Senate following Jan. 5 runoff elections in Georgia has caused some deep-pocketed Wall Street Democrats to secretly wish defeat on their party's candidates, according to Bloomberg.
The reason? Biden's plan to raise taxes will directly impact them.
"" Employees of securities and investment firms poured about $77 million into President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign and the super-PACs supporting him, more than quadruple what they steered toward Trump. But the pair of Democrats facing runoff elections in Georgia against Republican senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler on Jan. 5 are unlikely to see such lopsided support -- even with control of the chamber at stake.
For Wall Streeters, keeping the Senate in Republican hands means thwarting tax hikes for corporations and capital gains, as well as other policies that don’t align with their financial interests. -Bloomberg""
"Most Wall Street Democrats and certainly all Wall Street never-Trumpers -- Republicans that voted for Biden -- want a split government," says Hedge Fund manager Mike Novogratz, founder of Galaxy Digital.

Dr. Michael Ryan, Director of Global Alert and Response of the World Health Organization (WHO), told journalists at a press briefing on Monday that "pinch points," otherwise known as places where people gather, must be "managed."
Ryan spoke about numerous types of public areas, such as airports, public transportation, and even places like ski resorts that governments must "manage" to prevent further spreading of COVID-19.
He called on governments around the world to investigate "all forms of gatherings that lead to people congregating are moving en masse and how they are going to de-risk those processes."
Ryan said if governments don't believe those processes cannot be de-risked, governments should "curtail, postpone, and or even manage" those processes.
In other words, just like Thanksgiving - Christmas is likely canceled in the Western world. (ZH)

Month End: Reply
Looking ahead, the sharp rise in stocks this month suggest large dollar selling at month end.
_____________________________________________
Additional selling catalysts include major month-end selling, as JPMorgan recently noted. According to Panigirtzoglou, "if the picture in Figure 1 is a true reflection of how balanced mutual funds have been positioned in recent weeks, then there would be some vulnerability in equity markets in the near term from balanced mutual funds having to sell equities to revert to their 60:40 equity:bond target allocation, either by the end of November or by the end of December at the latest."
Panigirtzoglou echoes Goldman's month/quarter end year-end selling concerns, writing that he sees "some vulnerability in equity markets in the near term from balanced mutual funds, a $7tr universe, having to sell around $160bn of equities globally to revert to their target 60:40 allocation either by the end of November or by the end of December at the latest."
Of course, if this is the real catalyst, there is a lot more downside here, but did these massive managers really leave their allocation shift until the last day of the month?

Month-end London fix at the top of the hour
There was a lot of talk about USD selling into the London fix but we're seeing the opposite. Cable has given up most of its gains in a sharp fall.
Some of the move is mixed in with the pain in equities so we'll have to wait until after the top of the hour to get a cleaner read on what's happening.

gold has been abv monthly tenkan since breaking abv it in dec 2018 (sub 1300). apart from an intra month covid related period in march the monthly tenkan has been supportive. a break lower may suggest a bigger move. that said, if you see inflation then one might expect some kind of support soon. still hold a candle for 1700-1750 as offering a tradeable bounce but as i say gold goes down further than you think it will.

In the spirit of "let the winners run", honor your stops and don't worry about targets. Price will go where the market wants to go. If it reverses too much then your stops will protect your account.
I remember way back when EUR/USD went into the 1.60s...anyone who was around at the time can remember when everyone was thinking of resistances and targets. Price could never go higher than 1.25...1.30...1.40...1.50...up, up and away.
Even now, you can see what happens when (not enough) players try to go short. Price jumps up and that's that.

CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy said that “history will not remember people like Maria Bartiromo very well” and said the way she conducted the interview was “irresponsible” and “reckless.”
Minutes after Fox’s Maria Bartiromo concluded her interview with President Donald Trump, a stunned Brian Stelter kicked off CNN’s Reliable Sources with a segment slamming both Bartiromo and the “delusional” president.
He even went so far as to compare her to Alex Jones:
“There would be outrage if Fox News hired someone like InfoWars’ Alex Jones to be anchoring a show on their network. Frankly, there is not much daylight between Maria and Alex Jones. She’s accepting the same delusional conspiracy theories that the president is spinning. And she’s actually encouraging him. CB 00:46 I tend to agree w/Farber
that, essentially, kids are seen as dangers to weak adults
putting kids aside for a moment: colleague pointed to young adults (~20-something U crowd) monster wild underground maskless by secret invitation parties in Prague. After cops found one and were making arrests and issuing fines some journo got hold of few escapees and asked if people would ID themselves and if they are OK going mask-less. Said one are u kidding me give my name publicly and deprive myself of new invites ? I am not affraid, I already caught the virus, I am fine and immune. MY life continues to go on... (paraphrazing)
And that, to me, underscores and highlights the "us vs them" societal divide between youth and old(er/weak) folks.

IB AND CB. You 2 clowns need to become cellmates and share all the conspiracy theories you want...among other thigs. Even if this election was rigged do you really think USA would have survived another 4 years of Trump. You 2 f-uc-k-wits are clearly delusional

Quarantine May Negatively Affect Kids’ Immune Systems
Keeping children masked and separated is necessary. It could also undermine their bodies’ ability to learn how to fight pathogens.
By Donna L. Farber and Thomas Connors
Dr. Farber is a professor of immunology and surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where Dr. Connors is an assistant professor of pediatrics.

Following his recent decision to appoint Janet Yellen as new Treasury Secretary, Joe Biden has decided to fill many of the key economic advisory spots with female staffers, all close to either Obama or Hillary Clinton.
Biden is turning to longtime Hillary Clinton ally and Democratic policy staffer Neera Tanden to lead his Office of Management and Budget, while Cecilia Rouse will be head the Council of Economic Advisers, according to Bloomberg.
Biden isn't stopping there, and according to a separate Bloomberg report Biden's senior communications team is composed entirely of women, including Jen Psaki as White House press secretary. Psaki, a former Obama White House communications director and State Department spokeswoman, has been an on-camera spokeswoman for Biden’s transition office.
