Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) became the latest lawmaker to threaten to hold up the coronavirus stimulus package "until stronger conditions are imposed on the $500 billion corporate welfare fund."

"Unless Senators Graham (R-SC), Sasse (R-NE) and Time Scott (R-SC) drop their anti-worker objections to fast-tracking the emergency coronavirus legislation, I am prepared to put a hold on this bill until stronger conditions are imposed on the $500 billion corporate welfare fund," Sanders said over Twitter.

This brilliant interview examines the implications of this crash, the likely trajectory for financial markets and crucially WHY we got here as a result of an economy built on ASSET prices and not productivity.

The commentators also outline possible reforms which need to be implemented if the shape of the economy is to change.

ASSET prices can not and should not be the basis for an economy.

What about this:

"Now these imbeciles are deciding whether to hand over that authority to a privately-owned banking cartel that has greatly expanded the chasm between rich and poor, incentivized destructive speculation on an industrial scale, and repeatedly inflated behemoth asset-price bubbles that have inevitably blown up sending stocks and the real economy into freefall."

And so, under pressure from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and several major banks that trade gold, the CME Group has reportedly changed its contract-delivery rules to allow gold bars in London to be used to settle its contracts to ease disruption to trading.

As Reuters reports, London is a key gold storage center, where thousands of tonnes of metal underpin trading, but it uses 400-ounce bars which must be melted down and recast as 100-ounce bars to be accepted by Comex in New York.

Seven years ago - to the day - Dutch megabank ABN Amro changed its precious metals custodian rules to "no longer allow physical delivery."
Have no fear, they reassuringly added, your account will be settled at the bid or offer price in the 'market' and "you need to do nothing" as "we have your investments in precious metals."

** Changes in the handling of orders in bullion
On 1 April 2013,. ABN AMRO to another custodian for the precious metals gold, silver, platinum and palladium...
You need do nothing. We ensure that we have your investments in precious metals now the new way to handle and administer.**

At the time it was unclear who the "other custodian" was but we now know ABN Amro transferred the precious metal trade to the Swiss bank UBS.
Crucually, however, at UBS, it was not possible for customers to actually request the gold or silver.

Which brings us to today's news from Trouw.nl, that ABN Amro customers will no longer be able to put their money into physical gold, silver or platinum.
The bank will discontinue these three investment products next Friday.

****Customers will have to sell their positions before April 1. If that does not happen, ABN Amro will do this for them at the prevailing price.****

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) plan to fight the coronavirus includes a national mandate for ballot harvesting, same-day voter registration, and federally-mandated early voting provisions just in time for the 2020 presidential election.

As part of Pelosi’s coronavirus plan, House Democrats slipped in multiple measures from their H.R. 1 legislation that would implement nationwide ballot harvesting for federal elections — effectively allowing political operatives to collect and deliver an endless number of absentee ballots from voters.

The man is a lunatic and he crashed the economy. Somehow, don't ask me how - I don't understand it - he actually got re-elected.

So now what's this guy doing? He just announced an almost immediate 21 day curfew for everyone in India. No-one can leave the house. How is that supposed to work I have not idea? This is supposedly a response to the Coronavirus. Oh yeah, really? 10 reported deaths and 600 infected cases.

fwiw cable is in a flag range now. a slight upward tilt which suggests a break to downside but not necessarily so. if cannot test 115 area before turning up, it may be a sign selling is exhausted. similarly if once tested channel at 115, if cannot test the top, a sign of more weakness and downside break.

Actually think another downside test in the S&P to around 2300 +/- and then hold would help the bull case by forming a right shoulder for turn and move higher to 2500 and perhaps thru to 2800....

As NYC start we may assume euro selling starting also.
every single day NYC has managed to bring euro 100 pips lower from open. if previous day low at 1,0720 taken out then this vibe (crises under control) may change a lot.

Everything is still way out of control in Spain too. The good news is supplies from China (gloves and masks mostly) are arriving. The bad news is contagions and deaths continue to soar with no slowdown in sight. There has been multiple reports of patients leaving hospitals without being discharged out if fear. Dozens of old people are being found dead in nursing homes abandoned by staff. Mathematical models in the press this morning site number of infected in Spain somewhere between 700,000 and 900,000. The current lock down in place is to April 11. Talk is that gets extended through the end of April at least. The government continues to bicker about who gets what in the form of financial assistance.

Hard to see the € getting too happy with the current state of things over here. Maybe ranges compress and we see something like 1.0750-1.0850 til the end of the week.

ROME (Reuters) - Fatalities in Italy from coronavirus have surged in the last 24 hours, the Civil Protection Agency said on Tuesday, dashing hopes the epidemic in the world's worst hit country was easing after more encouraging numbers in the previous two days.

The death toll rose by 743 on Tuesday, the second highest daily tally since the outbreak emerged in northern regions on Feb. 21, and up steeply from the 602 recorded on Monday.

During a Tuesday press conference, Trump detailed the “critical” need for American independence in manufacturing, the energy sector, and territorially at the nation’s borders to stop the coronavirus crisis:

***' We should never be reliant on a foreign country for the means of our own survival. I think we’ve learned a lot. This crisis has underscored just how critical it is to have strong borders and a robust manufacturing sector. For three years, we’ve embarked on a great national project to secure our immigration system and bring back our manufacturing jobs. We’ve brought back many jobs, record numbers of jobs, and this really shows, this experience shows how important borders are. Without borders, you don’t have a nation.'

“Our goal for the future must be to have American medicine for American patients, American supplies for American hospitals, and American equipment for our great American heroes,” Trump said. “Now both parties must unite to ensure America is truly an independent nation in every sense of the word.”
