San Francisco (AFP) � Apple on Wednesday unveiled a new entry-level iPhone in a launch without fanfare, aiming to appeal to consumers facing a suddenly bleaker economic backdrop.
The updated iPhone SE will start at $399, or less than half the price of its flagship devices, and be available for order as of Friday in more than 40 markets.

�Across the world, governments and health authorities are working together to find solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, to protect people� Since COVID-19 can be transmitted through close proximity to affected individuals, public health officials have identified contact tracing as a valuable tool to help contain its spread. A number of leading public health authorities, universities, and NGOs around the world have been doing important work to develop opt-in contact tracing technology.�
�To further this cause, Apple and Google will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing. Given the urgent need, the plan is to implement this solution in two steps while maintaining strong protections around user privacy.�
�First, in May, both companies will release APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. These official apps will be available for users to download via their respective app stores.�
�Second, in the coming months, Apple and Google will work to enable a broader Bluetooth-based contact tracing platform by building this functionality into the underlying platforms. This is a more robust solution than an API and would allow more individuals to participate

According to the report, the Energy Department has drafted a plan to compensate companies for sitting on as much as 365 million barrels worth of oil reserves and counting it as part of the U.S. government�s emergency stockpile. West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures rose fractionally, about 20 cents to $20.42, on the news.
Unlike previous ideas float by the administration which included ordering forced production shutdowns, this plan is actually workable as federal law gives the Energy Department authority to set aside as much as 1 billion barrels of oil for emergencies - without dictating where they should go. That creates a legal opening for storing crude outside the government�s existing reserve and even blocking its extraction in the first place, according to Bloomberg.

Maryland�s death toll from the new coronavirus jumped by more than 100 Wednesday, as the state included probable deaths from the virus in its daily announcement of new cases and victims for the first time.
Another 47 victims who were confirmed to have the virus were added to the state�s count, with an additional 64 probable deaths announced. In all, 413 Marylanders are reported to have died from the virus.
�A death is classified as probable if the person�s death certificate lists COVID19 as the cause of death, but it has not yet been confirmed by a laboratory test,� tweeted Kata D. Hall, Gov. Larry Hogan�s deputy communications director.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) � The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) unveiled an advanced device that can remotely detect people infected with the novel coronavirus and also the contaminated areas within a range of 100 meters.
In comments at the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami said the homegrown device is a state-of-the-art and unique instrument that has been developed by local scientists after the outbreak of COVID-19.
By creating a magnetic field, the device is able to detect every coronavirus infection case within a 100-meter radius in the surrounding area, the commander said.
When the device�s antenna is pointed at a specific location, it will detect the contaminated spot within around 5 seconds, the general explained.
Major General Salami said one of the great advantages of the homegrown device is that the coronavirus diagnosis does not require a blood test anymore, since the smart detector can remotely identify those infected with COVID-19.

On Wednesday afternoon, massive crowds, organized by a conservative group, have surrounded Michigan's state Capitol building. Protestors are angry at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's (D) stay-at-home public health order during the pandemic.
Supporters of the Michigan Conservative Coalition have requested Whitmer to reopen the economy on May 1 and ease restrictions to return life to normal.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton said organizers are calling the movement "Operation Gridlock." Langton tweeted a video of a traffic jam of protestors that "extends for miles outside Lansing," waiting to get to the Capitol.
WOOD-TV's Heather Walker provides coverage from within Operation Gridlock. Walker interviewed several Michiganders, who are fed up with the public health order and want the economy to reopen. Many said they could make their own health decisions and don't need the government to tell them what to do.

Rates are being cut for a number of affiliate product categories. For example, the affiliate cut from purchases of furniture and home improvement products has fallen from 8% to 3%.

Apple made the announcement in a statement, forgoing the normal splashy product launch events of the past few years.
The screen is on the small side for smartphones, measuring 4.7 inches diagonally � bigger than the first-generation iPhone SE but smaller than the newest phones � yet boasts high-definition graphics for rich visuals.
Apple trimmed coasts by leaving out some of high-end features such as facial recognition, giving iPhone SE a fingerprint sensor and a home-screen button which fans will remember from previous generations.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that 80 million Americans will have their stimulus checks in-hand by next Wednesday.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said earlier that mass gatherings in NYC might not return until September, meaning no concerts, shows or anything for the entire summer as the world fights off the novel coronavirus.
De Blasio, who just one month ago dismissed the virus as a minor concern, said the city is going to "take this slow and carefully to make sure we get it right." It also means that NYC's famous beaches will likely remain shuttered.

Coronavirus has shaved tens of trillions of dollars off global markets, making once out-of-reach European companies prime takeover targets. Airlines, banks, hotel chains, even football teams are now cheap and vulnerable � which is making many in Europe uncomfortable.
EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager believes the best defence is a good offence. In an interview with the Financial Times, she said European countries should buy stakes in vulnerable firms to ward off Chinese takeovers. "The situation now really underlines the need so we work really intensively," she said. "This is one of our main priorities."
Vestager, who is also executive vice president of the Commission, said that measures shouldn't be rushed and that regulations would act as the best deterrent. Brussels is already working on such a proposal.
In the meantime, the EU announced plans to further relax state aid laws, allowing countries to help firms recapitalize when "necessary and appropriate." This opens the door for member states to purchase existing shares of companies at market price.
"We will make sure that taxpayers are sufficiently remunerated for their investment, and companies that receive capital support are subject to controls and governance provisions that limit possible distortions to competition in the single market," Vestager said in a statement.
