Consumer Spending
Reply
Paul Donovan
There are three baskets of consumer spending in a lockdown. Some spending is stable or increases. Some spending is delayed (people will buy, once shops reopen). Some spending is lost in a lockdown. In Europe, about a quarter of consumer spending is "lost". If you cannot get your hair cut in a lockdown, you do not get three haircuts the week the hair salon reopens.
▪ This means lockdowns can force some people to "store" (save) money. A person working from home with unchanged income can save. A person on a European furlough (receiving most of their income) can save. A person who is unemployed or on a US furlough does not have the income to save.
▪ If consumers have had little drop in income, and have not increased spending on things like Netflix and food at home too much, they will have "forced" savings. If consumers are secure in their jobs this money should be spent post-lockdown. This will give an additional (short-lived) boost to economic activity as lockdowns end.

Just like the Gilead thing, when I saw who wrote it...Feurstei(sp?), he used to be the 'rumor' spreader in BioTech for none other than The Street.com...you know who's specious info outlet. He got heat for the same kind of nuz breaks many times.
My take on today is that it's more due to OPEX than Gilead and Trump. Take a look at the options for AMZN and you'll see that what was driving its price moves yesterday were Options trading.
so the Options sellers(puts and calls) over this crash-o-matic 4 weeks across al the big stocks and the Index ETFs are going to use this "windfall of NUZ) to zero out all those "buyers' profits.
SnP Monthly Options have a Last Trade on the Thurs close. These options 'settle' based on the Opening Range price the following morning- Friday- Today.
Some people got HOSED big time, some people had a miracle move in their P/L stats. All on Gilead plus Trump After the Market move, last evening.
So once the Settlement is set --- in the first 15mins...it should get 'inneresting'

Starting off early today with a risk on bias on the back of the Gilead news and the Trump plan to reopen the economy. Both appear to be less than they seam. Gilead is pushing back on the Chicago reports and NYC saw a near 10% increase in new infections yesterday, so caution into the weekend might be warranted? So where are we?
Well watch the media. Coming up (we're told) the Greatest Depression since, well the Great Depression. And this because we all had a semi-enforced month-long break from normal economic activity. Hey, pretty fragile world we live in. Anyhow after our little break: economic catastrophe naturally looms, specially since the powers-that-be helpfully handed out money willy-nilly all over the globe.
So how to pay for it? Slaps forehead - OF COURSE - new Taxes. Temporary new taxes (they are always temporary - income tax was introduced temporarily to fund WWI). So hey we are all gonna be on the government subsistence income and TAXES have to rise.
Seeing this headline in Italy and Australia.... haven't really checked elsewhere.
Special mention to the Australians: closed down the economy on the back of 65 (sixty five) recorded deaths (to date). in 2018/2019 they recorded 3,000 deaths from flu and similar without any real panic. But hey dole queues are off the charts (they kindly raised the crappy dole), all international travel is verboten (tourism has tanked - quelle surprise) and the politicians are actually patting themselves on the back about how well they handled the crisis. Let's not even mention that moron in New Zealand who seems to think she is kind (kindness being the thing to aim for over there when really competence would be good).
Meanwhile back at the farm Donald is trying to open the U.S. economy up before the whole thing craters with ongoing opposition from Fauci (#FireFauci) and the Democrats. So all going to plan: please welcome the return of total government control of everything. Worked well before, nothing to worry about.

Hope denied.
After a one-two punch of disappointing news for Gilead out of China, where as we reported yesterday a trial of remdesivir in Covid-19 patients with mild or moderate symptoms was suspended as no eligible patients could be recruited according to an update on ClinicalTrials.gov, which in turn followed a trial of the drug in severely ill Covid-19 patients which was also terminated for similar reasons, it felt like one or more hedge funds would seek to manipulate public sentiment - and the market - and get out of an underwater position.
They did just that at 430pm today when the low profile Statnews published a report by Adam Feuerstein, best known for doing the bidding of one or more hedge fund clients, according to which a "Chicago hospital treating severe Covid-19 patients with Gilead Sciences’ antiviral medicine remdesivir in a closely watched clinical trial is seeing rapid recoveries in fever and respiratory symptoms, with nearly all patients discharged in less than a week, STAT has learned."
"Learned" from whom? A hedge fund or two who were long GILD and needed a fake news catalyst to get out? Because last time we checked, double blind, secret drug trials are, er... secret.
