JP thinking about this. We have markets without price discovery. The authorities effectively set price, akin to the supressed inflation of the ex-USSR. The trouble with that is this can continue for some time until something gives (like last September when short term rates sky rocketed to 10 percent before the FED stepped in without calling it QE). When the thing blows it can blow quickly but u gotta watch for signals. Obviously I wouldn't want to be holding either the USD or Treasuries but I'm not sure you can make a fortune going short right now either. Gold and select real assets will give you safety and longer term gains (or at least conserve real purchasing power). I want to look up the whole September debacle... it was triggered by the Chinese refusing Treasuries as collateral... in August (or something like that).

The natural air conditioner created some 13 million years ago with the formation of Santa Monica Bay has helped charm and cool Angelenos from the time people first inhabited this land. The chance to enjoy ocean breezes, and perhaps a swim, seemed like a Los Angeles birthright.

But the coronavirus pandemic has upended many truths of earlier eras. Now the people of Los Angeles will enter their sixth week under a stay-at-home order, facing a weekend of 90-degree-plus temperatures, with all 72 miles of the Los Angeles County coast closed to one and all.

The people appear prepared to abide. At least most of them. At least for now.

Update (1205ET): Following yesterday's bombshell revelation that a preliminary random testing of 3k New Yorkers for coronavirus antibodies had turned up 21% of test subjects in NYC as positive, NY Gov Cuomo said Friday that the number of hospitalized patients in his state continued to decline.

The state's "total hospitalizations" number hit its lowest level in almost a month.

The recent Stanford University antibody study now estimates that the fatality rate if infected is likely 0.1 to 0.2 percent, a risk far lower than previous World Health Organization estimates that were 20 to 30 times higher and that motivated isolation policies.

New York City, an epicenter of the pandemic with more than one-third of all U.S. deaths, the rate of death for people 18 to 45 years old is 0.01 percent, or 11 per 100,000 in the population. On the other hand, people aged 75 and over have a death rate 80 times that.

Of all fatal cases in New York state, two-thirds were in patients over 70 years of age; more than 95 percent were over 50 years of age; and about 90 percent of all fatal cases had an underlying illness. Of 6,570 confirmed COVID-19 deaths fully investigated for underlying conditions to date, 6,520, or 99.2 percent, had an underlying illness. If you do not already have an underlying chronic condition, your chances of dying are small, regardless of age

Scott W. Atlas, MD, is the David and Joan Traitel Senior Fellow at Stanford Universitys Hoover Institution and the former chief of neuroradiology at Stanford University Medical Center.

Profit machine Booking.com raises its hand for state aid, wrote financial daily Het Financieele Dagblad. Evening paper NRC Handelsblad called the request the dark side of the business climate. Much of the criticism focused on its use of tax planning and past payouts to investors. Parent company Booking Holdings Inc. has bought back $16 billion worth of stock over the past three years, according to its financial statements.

Booking paid so much money to its shareholders in recent years that there arent any buffers, said Jaap Koelewijn, corporate finance professor at Nyenrode Business University, by phone. This is a classic example of privatizing the profits and socializing the losses, he said.
