BERLIN Gazprom, the Kremlin-controlled energy giant, announced that it would temporarily shut down its gas pipeline to Germany at the end of the month for repairs, a move likely to trigger more uncertainty in Europe as countries struggle to compensate for cuts in Russian fossil fuels.NYT

What exactly is a recession? Wikipedia doesnt allow edits on its recession page anymore. - MarketWatch
Investopedia: "A recession is a significant, widespread, and prolonged downturn in economic activity. Because recessions often last six months or more, one popular rule of thumb is that two consecutive quarters of decline in a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) constitute a recession." - as of 08/19/2022

EU Carbon Permits
Reply
European carbon prices broke above 98 a tonne for the first time ever, after gas prices returned to record levels encouraging more utilities to swap to carbon-heavy coal, resulting in higher emissions and demand for permits. Natural gas prices in Europe bounced back to unprecedented levels, as heatwaves across the continent are set to push demand to above-normal levels while the historic drought threatens to halt energy shipments along the Rhine River.
Earlier this year, the European Commission announced plans to sell more carbon emission permits to fund the EUs exit from Russian energy. The European Commission unveiled a 210 billion plan for Europe to end its reliance on Russian energy by 2027, and to use the pivot away from Moscow to speed up its transition to green energy. The commission has 2.6 billion certificates in reserves and plans to sell between 200-250 million ETS certificates from Market Stability Reserves by the end of the decade.

EU Natural Gas
Reply
Natural gas futures linked to TTF, Europe's wholesale gas price, were trading around 240 per megawatt hour after closing at an all-time high in the previous session and now heading for their fourth consecutive week of gains, supported by a combination of tight supplies and soaring demand amid persistent heatwaves across Europe. A historic drought triggered by an arid summer that set heat records across Europe threatens to halt energy shipments along the Rhine River while limiting hydroelectric and nuclear power production. Exacerbating concerns about supplies, Russia's Gazprom has dramatically reduced flows through the Nord Stream pipeline to roughly 20% of its capacity, citing issues with turbines.
What could be Europe's biggest energy crisis in a generation has already prompted German regulators to advise that the bloc's largest economy must cut its natural gas use by 20% to protect themselves against a natural gas shortage this winter.

The problems for the euro are just getting started. Inflation is nothing compared to the inability to access energy once the sanctions that prohibit Europe from buying Russian crude kick in in December and Russian gas in Feb 2023. But before that there are Italian elections Sep 25. Italy will increasingly demonstrate the will to go their own way. Watch and see what happens when the fabric that holds the EU together starts to shred.....

The ECB's primary objective is to maintain price stability, that is, to preserve the purchasing power of the euro. We do this by making sure that inflation the rate at which the overall prices for goods and services change over time remains low, stable, and predictable.

German Producer Inflation Hits Fresh Record Peak
Annual producer inflation in Germany rose to a new record high of 37.2% in July of 2022 from 32.7 a month earlier and above market forecasts of 32%. Energy prices remained the biggest upward contributor (105.0% vs 86.1% in June), namely the distribution of natural gas (163.8%), and electricity (125.4%).
Excluding energy, producer prices climbed 14.6% from a year earlier. Other significant price increases were seen for intermediate goods (19.1%), particularly metals (24.1%), fertilizers and nitrogen compounds (100.4 %), and cereal flour (48.9%); non-durable consumer goods (16.2%), such as food (21.1%); durable consumer goods (10.9%); and capital goods (8%), the biggest increase since at least September 1975. On a monthly basis, producer prices were up 5.3%, the most on record, after June's print and consensus of a 0.6% gain.
