(Reuters/IFR) - The dramatic shift to online shopping that has crushed U.S. department stores in recent years now threatens the investors who a decade ago funded the vast expanse of brick and mortar emporiums that many Americans no longer visit.

Weak September core retail sales, which strip out auto and gasoline sales, provide a window into the pain the holders of mall debt face in coming months as retailers with a physical presence keep discounting to stave off lagging sales.

Some $128 billion of commercial real estate loans - more than one-quarter of which went to finance malls a decade ago - are due to refinance between now and the end of 2017, according to Morningstar Credit Ratings.

US mall investors set to lose billions as retail gloom deepens

Trading Themes--
  • Today has a light data calendar with only key Canadian CPI and Retail Sales data slated.

  • As expected, the highlight of trade this week has been the Thursday ECB policy board meeting outcome. While the ECB statement included no surprises, markets took the Draghi comments to be dovish. The ECB used its standard rhetoric and said no decision on a "taper" would be announced until the December meeting. Markets reacted by taking out stops above and below the markets in EURUSD.

  • UK Retail Sales data Thursday were lacklustre, while Australian Employment data for September were weaker than expected.

  • U.S. Bond yields remain depressed following mixed September CPI data and recent Fed comments. Both the Fed and BOE have started to make it clear that they would ignore an inflation overshoot to get their economies growing again.

Trading Themes--
  • As expected, the highlight of trade Thursday was the ECB policy board meeting outcome. While the ECB was the source of no surprises. Nevertheless, markets reacted by taking out stops above and below the markets in EURUSD. Personally, I think this was primarily a stop-hunting exercise for built-up stops by algos as a result of the narrow ranges we have seen all week.

  • UK Retail Sales data were lacklustre, while Australian Employment data for September were weaker than expected. Friday sees key Canadian CPI and Retail Sales data.

  • The final U.S. Presidential debate in Las Vegas on Wednesday evening likely has not changed the course of the election. Hillary Clinton has an insurmountable lead. The Republican party leadership is now focused on trying to salvage what they can from the key House and Senate races.

  • U.S. Bond yields remain depressed following September CPI data and recent Fed comments. Both the Fed and BOE have started to make it clear that they would ignore an inflation overshoot to get their economies growing again.
