European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that with the inauguration of Joe Biden, Europe once again has “a friend in the White House”.
Speaking before the European Parliament on Wednesday morning, the EU Commission boss hailed the prospect of enacting globalist policies with the 77-year-old Democrat.
“This time-honoured ceremony on the steps of the U.S. Capitol will be a demonstration of the resilience of American democracy. And resounding proof that, once again, after four long years, Europe has a friend in the White House,” von der Leyen declared.
“From climate to health, from digitalisation to democracy – these are global challenges that need renewed and improved global cooperation. And the EU and U.S. must lead from the front and bring an alliance of like-minded partners with us,” she added.
“I am delighted that on day one of this new administration, the U.S. will rejoin the Paris Agreement. This is the starting point for our renewed cooperation. And way more is to come”

It's a relief to hear they have taken cognizance of the threats bitcoin and other micro payment systems are to the foundation of the world's economic structure.
When we pay for a product in cash we're tendering denominations issued and regulated by central banks. An example is a product costing 220. We tender 2x100 1x20 or 2x100 1x50, but naa... keep the change...
Bitcoin is not legal tender, but is more like throwing good money after bad so we skip that, however with the MPS, we are not tendering 2x100 1x20 but just tendering a banknote of 220, which has nothing to do with the issuing authority, and removes them and the commercial bankers from the markets. The mere fact that MPS are only used in B2C and not B2B makes the other side of money creation lopsided, there needs to be 1000 yards cash in the market at any given time and sufficent velocity for a round trip, but because of MPS only 725 yards or some such figure is being absorbed, the rest is not accounted for, and now that becomes a money market problem...

Former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King sees risk of another global financial crisis
Asset values on the balance sheet of many financial intermediaries may have to be written down, King says
Debt defaults by businesses and countries are rising, and these could cascade through the financial system and possibly trigger another financial crisis, the former head of the Bank of England said Monday.
In a talk at the American Economics Association annual meeting, Mervyn King, who was governor of the Bank of England during the last financial crisis, said significant debt restructuring may be a necessary precondition to restoring the global economy to health.
But this restructuring implies “writing down asset values on the balance sheet of many financial intermediaries to more realistic levels,” King said.
And that will require “the recapitalization of some financial intermediaries in some countries,” King said.
“To put it more bluntly, there is a risk of another financial crisis,” King said.
The former BOE governor noted that, relative to GDP, global debt levels are higher today than in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis.
“If the problem before the [2008] crisis was too much borrowing and too much spending, than the problem today is too much borrowing and too little spending,” King said.
An early task for the incoming Biden administration will be to restore international cooperation so a crisis can be averted, he said.
“The looming wave of debt restructuring, both corporate and sovereign, will be difficult to handle without greater cooperation between countries if we are to avoid another debt crisis,” King said.

The CDC:Update (1300ET): Canada just followed in the steps of the CDC, as its chief drug regulator warned that it's "too soon" to say wwhether the new mutation will impact Canada in a serious way, following a similar remark earlier in the day.
Now, despite the EU's practically non-stop warnings, anxiety about the new variation is growing intensely.
Update (1145ET): As the world continues to panic about the new COVID mutation discovered in southern England (while others wonder about the 'hard evidence', of which there appears to be none), the CDC has officially weighed in for the first time, with the agency stating that there's "no evidence" the variation causes more severe illness, or in any way increases the risk of death.
The variant, which is knownby the name "B.1.1.7." also has yet to be identified by scientists in the US, though former FDA chief Scott Gottlieb said during an interview earlier that the new strain has almost certainly already made its way here.
Here's the rest of the executive summary:
A new variant strain of SARS-CoV-2 that contains a series of mutations has been described in the United Kingdom (UK) and become highly prevalent in London and southeast England. Based on these mutations, this variant strain has been predicted to potentially be more rapidly transmissible than other circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2. Although a variant may predominate in a geographic area, that fact alone does not mean that the variant is more infectious. Scientists are working to learn more about this variant to better understand how easily it might be transmitted and whether currently authorized vaccines will protect people against it. At this time, there is no evidence that this variant causes more severe illness or increased risk of death. Information regarding the virologic, epidemiologic, and clinical characteristics of the variant are rapidly emerging. CDC, in collaboration with other public health agencies, is monitoring the situation closely. CDC will communicate new information as it becomes available.
The CDC also clarified some basic facts about the mutated variant discovered in South Africa, which has been reported to be the same as the strain found in southern England, was actually formed by a completely separate series of mutations, not migration from the UK to SA.

He called on governments around the world to investigate "all forms of gatherings that lead to people congregating are moving en masse and how they are going to de-risk those processes."

The NFL has bigger problems than the coronavirus. They have to contend with a loss of audience in both TV and stadium sales. Former viewers have dropped out, and not just because of a virus.
In other words...get woke, go broke. Simple as that.
this is good one ...
how to agonize the pesants:
-
The Broncos don’t have a quarterback. The 49ers don’t have a place to practice or play. The Ravens are about to pass the Marlins for the worst outbreak in sports. The coronavirus is raging through the NFL just like it’s raging through the rest of the country; it turns out a bunch of half-measures while plowing ahead with your plans won’t stop a pandemic.
Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel tested positive for the virus on Thursday; the NFL said the team could practice on Friday, but they chose not to. The team practiced on Saturday, then yanked quarterbacks Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles in the middle of a workout due to “contact tracing concerns,” according to multiple reports. All three quarterbacks are ineligible to play Sunday because they are “high risk contacts” with Driskel.
That leaves the team with no quarterbacks ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game against the Saints. It’s unclear what changed for the Broncos between the start and end of practice on Saturday, but the NFL is going ahead with the game. Denver can’t just sign anyone off the street, because they need six days to clear the league’s protocols. Practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton, who was Wake Forest’s starting QB in 2015, will likely be the Broncos’ first choice at QB, according to an NFL Network report. Hinton missed the entire 2018 college season and then converted to wide receiver in 2019. Running back Royce Freeman might take some snaps too.
It maybe shouldn’t be surprising coming from the Broncos, who only admitted that defensive coordinator Ed Donatell had been hospitalized with the virus after linebacker Alexander Johnson blurted it to the media last week.
Several Broncos players complained that the NFL was forcing them to play while other games had been postponed earlier this season. “Y’all can’t possibly send us into a game without a QB,” tight end Noah Fant tweeted.
[More Sports] 3 keys to a Giants victory over the Bengals and a third straight win »
The 49ers’ problem is less immediate, but arguably more severe. Santa Clara County rolled out a ban on all contact sports through December 21, and clarified that there would be no exception for the 49ers or Sharks. The Niners are at the Rams this week, but are scheduled to host the Bills and Washington Team the next two weeks, which both fall before Dec. 21. They also practice in Santa Clara, an activity that is clearly banned under the order. (Previously, Santa Clara having slightly tougher restrictions than the rest of the country was a jokey annoyance for Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth, who had to broadcast a Niners game behind masks.)
At least the Niners can play somewhere. The Ravens announced Saturday afternoon that six more players had been added to their Reserve/COVID list for a total of 18 this week. Three offensive linemen and five defensive linemen are on the list; starting quarterback Lamar Jackson and the team’s top two running backs have already tested positive this week. The Ravens-Steelers game, originally scheduled for Thanksgiving, was first moved to Sunday and now to Tuesday.
The Steelers had been complaining about the Thursday game getting moved, calling it “some BS” and “a joke.” On Saturday, Pittsburgh running back James Conner and QB coach Matt Canada tested positive. The team claims that Ben Roethlisberger was not a “close contact” of Canada’s — the standard that knocked out Denver’s quarterbacks — leaving him eligible to play in the Ravens game, whenever it happens.

There is a huge amount of important stuff still going on in the depths across geographies and geopolitics and markets. Massive global realignments and structural shifts are about to occur if Biden shifts policy, or if he continues on from what Trump was doing, or even if Trump somehow manages to prevail: that covers all bases.
Yet much of the media are opting to merely dip their toes in these deep, dark waters. For example, yesterday saw one US journalist tweet about Joe Biden’s socks

George H.W. Bush was known for his socks, maybe Biden will be too? Today he wore dark blue socks adorned with lighter blue dogs. (Yes, there are plenty of more substantive things to tweet about but we can have some fun sometimes too.)

Monica Lewinsky is a sideshow. The real story is that TPTB in banking, government and enterprise (but NOT small) business are going to do everything in their power to help Biden to succeed. This is similar to what was done for Obama, and for many of the same reasons.
Look for LOTS of loans...call it QE, call it repo, call it whatever you want. There will be lots of new government spending, and lots of made-up funding to catalyze it. Look for lots of volatility as the markets try to make up their minds about what is happening. Any detrimental effects will be minimized in public view, and only positive things will be said in the media.
It's easy to call this a political thing, but I'm viewing it as more a case of TPTB banding together in a big-a** CYA move. They protect each other or they will hang from lamp posts...simple as that.

NY Governor Cuomo is set to soon receive an International Emmy award for his once-daily televised briefings on the coronavirus pandemic that killed tens of thousands of New Yorkers this spring.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, whose members include media and entertainment figures from over 60 countries and 500 companies, announced Friday it plans to present the award to the Democratic governor in a live-streamed show Monday.
International Academy President & CEO Bruce L. Paisner said Cuomo is being honored with the academy’s Founders Award for using his briefings to inform and calm the public. Previous recipients include former Vice President Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey, and director Steven Spielberg.
“The governor’s 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure,” he said. “People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back.”

The state of Pennsylvania on Friday backtracked from a portion of tightened coronavirus protocols issued earlier in the week that would have required many of the state’s professional and college athletes to wear masks even during competition.
A state-issued FAQ that accompanied the mandate detailed the requirements for those participating in sports.
“Coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear face coverings if they cannot maintain sustained physical distance from persons outside of their household. This includes while actively engaged in workouts, competition, and on the sidelines, in the dugout, etc.,” the FAQ reads.
The NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers and NCAA’s Penn State Nittany Lions declared they were exempt from the mandate, causing confusion over the new requirements.

The problem for the MSM isn't Trump, but rather the ever-increasing portion of the US population that is tuning them out. Notice, if you will, that the legal battles are a sideshow to the real problem...that millions of people in the country think (rightly or wrongly) that Biden cheated, that the mainstream media helped him do it, and that increasing numbers of US citizens are ignoring the media as "fake news".
Any other Republican would be crying for their mommy, and doing the Nixon thing of "exiting the office with dignity". This is what the MSM wants most of all...for Trump to go out of office in shame, rejected by everybody and be replaced by Harris, Biden, and Obama pulling the strings. These are two totally different types of traders. There are very few Warren Buffetts in the world. There are millions of day traders. In Israel we call them "cab drivers."
Linda Raschke is a genius day short term trader. It takes a special state of mind, humility, and some luck
Markets move between trend periods and trading range periods. In a strong trend--day traders will lose (Unless, of course , they scalp ONLY in the direction of the trend and give up the profits on the short corrections or retracements). In ranges--long term traders just sit and hold. Short term traders, even up to the weekly swings level, can make good money.
Any grand classifications and statements are false essentially.

Res ipsa loquitur – The thing itself speaks
For years, many of us have criticized President Donald Trump for his attacks on the media when they asked him about controversies involving him or his family. The media however has been largely silent as Democratic leaders have ratcheted up attacks on any journalists who question their positions or the party lines. That was evident recently when Speaker Nancy Pelosi bizarrely attacked CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer as an apologist for the Trump Administration simply because he pressed her on blocking the stimulus package. Other liberals piled on Blitzer for daring to challenge the party line.
Now Joe Biden has attacked the first reporter from one of the networks who simply asked for a response to the unfolding scandal involving his son Hunter Biden. In emails found on the laptop, Joe Biden is named in communications with foreign figures seeking influence over U.S. policy. Biden refused to comment and then disparaged CBS News reporter Bo Erickson for even asking him the question.
Erickson simply asked “Mr. Biden, what is your response to the New York Post story about your son, sir?”
Bo Erickson CBS
@BoKnowsNews
I asked Joe Biden: What is your response to the NYPost story about your son, sir?
He called it a “smear campaign” and then went after me. “I know you’d ask it. I have no response, it’s another smear campaign, right up your alley, those are the questions you always ask.”
__________________________________________________
Now however the question is how other journalists will respond. ABC has yet to even air the allegations and failed to ask a single question to Biden on it during the recent town hall event. Whether these emails are fabricated or authentic, this story is major news. The question is whether there are major news organizations willing to report it.(ZH)

* CFIUS was first established by President Gerald Ford's Executive Order 11858 in 1975, initially to study foreign investment. But in the 1980s, fear of Japanese investment (and in particular a proposed purchase of Fairchild Semiconductor by Fujitsu) led Congress to pass the Exon–Florio Amendment in 1988, which empowered CFIUS to reject deals. From 2013–2015, 20% of CFIUS's cases have to do with investment from China. CFIUS does not acknowledge which deals are under review, does not require the involvement of any of the parties of a deal, and does not publicly announce its findings.

"Since the left is now in histrionics over President Trump's perfectly legal use of the US tax code to avoid paying taxes for 10 out of the last 15 years, perhaps they'll give as much attention to Joe Biden - who used another perfectly legal tax 'loophole' to avoid approximately $500,000 in payroll taxes on $15 million in income.
Of course, they ignored it in July when the Wall Street Journal reported that Joe and Jill Biden took advantage of the "S corporation" payroll tax loophole that the Obama-Biden administration unsuccessfully attempted to close.
According to the report, the Bidens routed income from book sales and speeches through S corporations - avoiding the 3.8% self-employment tax they would have paid if they had been compensated directly, and avoiding as much as $500,000 in taxes.
"There’s no reason for these to be in an S corp—none, other than to save on self-employment tax," accountant Tony Nitti told the WSJ at the time.

USDA’s Export Sales report showed 2.457 MMT of bean bookings for the week ending 9/10.
USDA mandatory announcements already covered 62% of the total with an additional 392,100k MT that were not previously announced. Bean export commitments are at 1.188 bbu through the first 10 days of data.
That is 56% of USDA’s MY(marketing year) total for bean exports, on near record forward bookings, compared to the 5-yr average of 34%

Realistically speaking, I suggest a Harris presidency would be tenuous at best, most likely resulting in chaos on the ground and in the markets. The problem with thinking of a Harris "presidency" is that one assumes a stable America. This is not the case with Trump, even though after several years he is a known quantity that is accepted (albeit begrudgingly) by at least half the country.
Harris was not accepted even in her own state of California. No matter what, she will be viewed as someone who was not elected, but rather "installed" as the result of dirty tricks. This is not a recipe for stability.
From a trading perspective, this will introduce an element that has been lacking in the US for some time...political and market instability. The political instability will result from her lack of genuine support from any significant branch of American society. Market instability will result from the lack of support from both domestic and world markets. The US under Harris would lack the ONE TRUE currency that makes the world go around: TRUST. Nobody believes in her, not even Willie Brown.
The interesting question is: In a Harris presidency, who would be behind the throne? Harris would be just another figurehead. All the usual suspects are aging, except for maybe Barack Obama and his former cabinet. Who else is there?

What reasons and incentives do they have to burn down a country which has sustained the world and still sustains them? What did the government in another US state do to them, which cannot be resolved via due legal procedure and arbritration or even mediation for that matter? The United States of America will do anything to help it's people and people in other countries too, look at what they did to those what do you call those criminals daesh/deash or whatever. Why do we discuss the US Government sending frigates to this side of the world so as to keep China's dominance in check?
With regards to Lentils, then No.... They serve what is consumed by the local population. In season Vegetables, Rice, Flatbreads, Custard, Fruits etc etc... meaning "A full meal", Yes, Lentil's are a staple so they do serve lentils soup too, but there is always an option for a person to skip on the lentils and get served the other food items.
We discuss All India, not only Hindu things, as India is a secular country, but this is blown out of proportion and is being manipulated by certain criminally vested interests inside and outside of India. I don't trust any of them, however in the Islamic parts of India*, and even applicable to all Muslims who have become unfortunate targets of Islamaphobia, by virtue of their religion. But, even Muslims offer such types of so called free meals.... We're talking about Chicken, Mutton, Rice, Flatbreads, Eggs, Dry Fruits (Imported Varieties) all kinds of stuff. This all is done in some places year round where allowed and feasible, and even outside of the duration of their Ramdan. They do the "Free mealing and dealing" all over Pakistan too, and in certain places on a good enough scale to feed a good amount of people. That's why I respect Pakistan, for that specific thing.
Now, in future matters of politics, I treat both India and Pakistan as 1. In matters of previous wars a cowardly adversary, on the basis of humanity a people with a rich heritage that must be preserved and safeguarded from the westernized version of the electronic age, Muslim women dreaming of the harsh realities of life and days when they will be able to walk around town wearing Mini Skirts etc, but... they might just reach home crawling.
*Where there are sizeable populations of Muslims, and even in places inside of the country where they are fewer in number, or even a handful of them.

George Floyd died from a drug overdose, probably caused by his self-admitted practice of "hooping". The cops restrained the guy, but his death was already coming by the time they got to him. You need not be bothered by this...his death was self-inflicted. The rioters who are burning America's cities have their own reasons and their own incentives, and they have nothing to do with that guy Floyd.
As for Indian philanthropy via "free meals", let's just say that lentils are real cheap...even in India. You can get so many free meals in India that you'll never want a bowl of lentil soup ever again.
Caribbean! Rafe... 21:49:46 GMT - 09/16/2020
This bothers me a lot and I can't stand everyone attacking the poor government and could not help but to examine just the initial floyd death clues, in that he went into a business place and paid for his food with counterfeit money, and the police caused his death by whatever means whether they knelt on his windpipe and snapped his neck or whatever else was said and done.
People don't go to homeless shelters due the stigma's etc. The humble alternative is simple, and is to visit a place of worship to pray, and then on the way out collect a meal, eat and then leave... That's it.
Too many religious places inside of India follow the above philantropic model, starting early in the morning and finishing late in the evening. There is absolutely no concern by them about their religion, or whether a person is rich, or whomsoever they think themsleves to be. And food is served right after worship, and on the way out one can stand in a fast moving queue, get food served to them, and then go inside the mess hall to eat. Second and third servings are given without questions asked even 3 times a day, as the people serving don't have even a second of time to look at another persons face. How they get financed? Financial Donations... from a dollar all the way up to millions and some even solely funded days. eg. One kind guy goes in asking for bank details and without a second thought calls his bank to donate more than enough money to feed 50, 000 people for 2 weeks. Why should he worry or even care?. Sometimes, I have in the past heard of people donating majority of their monthly income without a care in the world, do they starve? Nope... Do they even live near that place of worship? Nope... Do they worry about anything? oh! not a darned thing in the world! Anyhows....

The Federal Reserve is committed to using its full range of tools to support the U.S. economy in this challenging time, thereby promoting its maximum employment and price stability goals.
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing tremendous human and economic hardship across the United States and around the world. Economic activity and employment have picked up in recent months but remain well below their levels at the beginning of the year. Weaker demand and significantly lower oil prices are holding down consumer price inflation. Overall financial conditions have improved in recent months, in part reflecting policy measures to support the economy and the flow of credit to U.S. households and businesses.

After "rogue" Chinese scientist Dr. Li-Meng Yan was silenced by Twitter yesterday over her claims that the coronavirs was "created in a lab", Tucker Carlson had her on his show last night to try and give her message - which has been condemned as fraudulent by the press - a broader airing.
After telling Tucker and his audience that the CCP is trying to "disappear" her, Dr. Mong said SARS-CoV-2 was a "frankenvirus" designed to target humans, and that it was "intentionally released."
"It could never comes from nature," she said, at one point, referring to COVID-19.
After Tucker's social media managers shared a clip from Tuesday night's show, however, Facebook immediately jumped on the censorship bandwagon, blocking the clip and imposing a label reading "false info".
A similar post shared on the show's Facebook page, with more than 2.5 million followers, was also censored.

You basically have the 'medical consensus' that a vaccine*IF Developed*, will not work to prevent deaths. So, the economy can never fully open.
Scientists know that vaccines engineered to protect the public from influenza, hepatitis B, tetanus and rabies can be less effective in obese adults than in the general population, leaving them more vulnerable to infection and illness. There is little reason to believe, obesity researchers say, that COVID-19 vaccines will be any different.

(Bloomberg) Xi Makes a Political Gamble by Telling Chinese to Clean Their Plates
Xi Jinping wants 1.4 billion diners to clean their plates. But the Chinese president’s campaign against food waste risks touching a third rail in a country where meals are a cornerstone of private life.
This week, Xi rolled out a new push to curb the “shocking and distressing” problem of discarded leftovers, as he seeks to fortify a fragile food supply strained by floods, epidemics, locusts and trade wars. He cited a Tang Dynasty poem imploring people to “know that each grain on your plate comes from the labor of peasants.” .../.

Borrowing to Buy Stocks Pushes China’s Record Household Debt
(Bloomberg) -- After receiving dozens of phone calls and text messages from banks touting cheap, unsecured and easy-to-get consumer loans, Eric Zhang visited one of China’s largest lenders in June and borrowed 400,000 yuan ($57,600) at an interest rate of 4%.
But there was a catch -- he had to sign a letter promising the money wouldn’t be invested in property or stocks. That didn’t stop Zhang. A few days later, he’d found a merchant who helped him make a fake purchase and move the cash to his brokerage account. .../.

In other words, someone hacked a Twitter account with access to virtually every other Twitter account. For what it's worth...Microsoft has to write and test a "small" piece of hardware-specific code for each chipset combination before they release Windows 10 for a particular platform. That's literally hundreds of chipset combinations.
In other words, there is no such thing as a common code base for Windows 10 that is available for all platforms all at once. It doesn't work like that. In the interest of change control, Microsoft makes selective updates available for selected platforms a few at a time...for example all stuff made by Dell, HP, Lenovo one day...then maybe motherboards with xxx chipsets a few days later...and so on.
Windows Update should prevent the install from occurring at all if the hardware isn't qualified yet...but sometimes bugs happen.

Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott ran into to the same error message when upgrading a machine from Windows 10 version 1809. "Never seen this before," he said.
Making matters worse, the issue arises when Windows 10 2004, also known as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, is offered through Windows Update. According to Thurrott, the block message appears after the upgrade installs to 30%.

One week ago, when looking at the growing divergence between the number of new coronavirus cases in the US and shrinking number of fatalities, we referred to Nordea's strategist Andreas Steno Larsen, who observed that "we are entering “crunch time” on fatalities since they should start to rise in early July given the lead/lag structure versus new cases."
As Larsen further predicted, "if fatalities don’t spike early in July, then people will conclude that it’s probably spreading amongst a part of the population that is not as sensitive, or that it is a resulted of increased testing or that the virus has become less deadly as we move into the summer months. Governors in Texas, California and Florida seem to have concluded that the below correlation holds, but the jury is still out."
His conclusion was that "the next 6-10 days will be crucial."
Well, one week later, we decided to follow up on the current status and... there is still no spike in fatalities at either the federal level...

Tracked as CVE-2020-1425 & CVE-2020-1457, the two bugs only impact Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019 distributions.
In security advisories published today, Microsoft said the two security flaws can be exploited with the help of a specially crafted image file.
If the malformed images are opened inside apps that utilize the built-in Windows Codecs Library to handle multimedia content, then attackers would be allowed to run malicious code on a Windows computer and potentially take over the device.
The two bugs -- described as two remote code execution (RCE) vulnerabilities -- received patches earlier today.

The protesters called for Gov. Andrew M. They also called for the billionaires and the state to recognize Indigenous land rights, including the Shinnecock Indian Nation's claim to Shinnecock Hills and surrounding territory.
The group, which included Shinnecock Indian Nation members, New York Communities for Change, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, the Long Island Progressive Coalition and the Poor People’s Campaign LI, cited Forbes figures that estimate billionaires statewide have seen their collective net worth increase by $44.9 billion from March 18 to May 15.

June 30 (UPI) — Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious diseases expert, told a Senate committee Tuesday the United States could eventually see 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day.
Speaking at a hearing of the Senate health, education, labor and pensions committee with other members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Fauci said the country is “not in total control” of the pandemic and could see daily cases more than double from their current average.
“I can’t make an accurate prediction, but it’s going to be very disturbing,” he said in a response to a question from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. “I will guarantee you that, because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country, even though in other parts of the country they’re doing well, they are vulnerable.
“We are now having 40,000-plus new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around, and so I am very concerned,” he said.

Schools across the U.S. are coping with uncertainty for the year that begins in August or September as it’s largely unclear whether in-person courses will be offered given the rise in Covid-19 cases. Students at dozens of schools have already balked at the full price for last semester’s tuition with months of online classes, suing for billions of dollars in refunds. -Bloomberg
The richest liberal arts university in the country, Williams College, has slashed tuition by 15% "in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances and of this academic year and the uncertainty we face in the year ahead," according to Bloomberg.
"This reduction recognizes the fact that the pandemic and associated challenges are requiring us to cancel winter study as well as fall athletics competition and many student activities, among other opportunities that we usually encourage families to expect as part of their student’s education," said school President Maud Mandel.
Williams, which has a $2.9 billion endowment (as of June, 2019) will also be canceling sports competitions and travel for the season according to a Monday statement.
For the 2020-2021 academic year, Tuition, room and board will set back rich parents and lending institutions $63,200. Of note, four years at the university will set one back more than the average mortgage balance carried by millennials.

Trump’s jaw-dropping calls with foreign leaders threaten national security, CNN report claims - June 29 by Mike Murphy
Sarah Kaplan and Joel Achenbach, The Washington Post Published 3:37 pm CDT, Monday, June 29, 2020
Of the approximately 50,000 genomes of the new virus that researchers worldwide have uploaded to a shared database, about 70% carry the mutation, officially designated D614G but known more familiarly to scientists as "G."
"G" hasn't just dominated the outbreak in Chicago - it has taken over the world. Now scientists are racing to figure out what it means.
At least four laboratory experiments suggest that the mutation makes the virus more infectious, although none of that work has been peer-reviewed. Another unpublished study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory asserts that patients with the G variant actually have more virus in their bodies, making them more likely to spread it to others.
The mutation doesn't appear to make people sicker, but a growing number of scientists worry that it has made the virus more contagious.
Update (1837ET): In the most sweeping rollback of the economic reopening since the state first started a month ago, Arizona governor Doug Ducey has ordered bars, nightclubs, gyms, movie theaters and water parks to close for at least 30 days beginning at 8pm local time as the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations has continued to climb.
Reopening of schools has been delayed until Aug. 17, and gatherings of 50 or more are prohibited statewide. Some school districts were due to start classes in less than a month. Gov Ducey cited safety concerns and a need for "consistency" in the state's numbers.

Yelp makes a shocking claim: "Of all business closures on Yelp since March 1, 41% are permanent closures."
"Our data shows the largest spikes of permanent closures occurred in March, followed by May and June, indicating that the businesses that were already struggling had to permanently close right away and the businesses that were trying to hold on, but unable to weather the COVID-19 storm, were forced to shutter in recent months."
"Among those with the highest rate of business closures are shopping and retail (27,663 closed businesses), restaurants (23,981 closed businesses), beauty (15,348 closed businesses) and fitness (5,589 closed businesses).
"Retail was by far the hardest hit, experiencing the highest number of total closures, with the average daily rate continuing to increase since March. Of all closures on Yelp since March 1, 20% are for retail businesses and 35% of closed retail businesses are indicated as permanent on Yelp.
"In March, Restaurants had the highest number of business closures, compared to other industries, and have continued to close at high rates. Of the businesses that closed, 17% are restaurants, and 53% of those restaurant closures are indicated as permanent on Yelp. Restaurants run on thin margins and can sometimes take months or even years to break even, resulting in this higher rate of permanent closures."

This year, the dust is the most dense it has been in a half a century, several meteorologists told Reuters earlier this week as it crossed over the Caribbean.
The Saharan dust plume will hang over the region until the middle of next week, deteriorating the air quality in Texas, Florida and other states where the number of COVID-19 cases has recently spiked.
“There’s emerging evidence of potential interactions between air pollution and the risk of COVID, so at this stage we are concerned,” said Gregory Wellenius, an professor of environmental health at Boston University’s School of Public Health.

With various polls showing Joe Biden commanding a sizable lead over Donald Trump ahead of the November presidential election, and even online betting sites such as PredictIt representing Biden as a 14 point favorite, the stock market has clearly been surprisingly sanguine about a change in leadership to a Democratic president, even if it entails higher corporate taxes....
However, while stocks appear unfazed so far by political events, the same can not be said for FX traders who according to Bloomberg are "starting to contemplate the unthinkable": The possibility that the U.S. presidential election produces no clear winner, leading to protracted uncertainty.
According to yen implied volatility, there is a sharp jump in expected price moves around election day which is expected to persist into 2021. That is in contrast with the run-up to the 2016 election, when turmoil indicator in FX land reflected only a temporary minor uptick in volatility as investors broadly overlooked the likelihood of a Trump presidency - or any controversy surrounding the results - leaving them painfully exposed to those events.

Barring a landslide, what’s probably not coming on Nov. 3? A result in the race for the White House.
If voters remain reluctant to cast ballots in person, November is likely to bring an even more massive wave of voting by mail than what has swept across the country during primary season. That, in turn, means a close race between President Trump and former vice president Joe Biden in a pivotal state could take days, even weeks, to resolve, election officials across the country are warning.
Barring a landslide for either candidate, that scenario could invite an unprecedented test of the country’s faith in its elections: an extended period without a declared winner.

France: Public’s Trust in Science Suffers ‘Significant Decline’ over Coronavirus
“There’s a significant decline in confidence,” said Sylvain Brouard, research director of the National Political Science Foundation at Sciences Po and a member of the team tracking public reaction to the pandemic in France.
Thirty-six percent of respondents now say that scientists are hiding information about the coronavirus from the public.
According to Dr. Brouard, two controversies in particular have contributed to the change in the national mood.
The first involves the benefit of using face masks to mitigate contagion. The government said initially that there was no scientific evidence favoring the use of masks, a position that was echoed by official scientific advisory groups. Later on, however, the government position changed 180 degrees and now it mandates the wearing of face masks on public transportation.
“It’s a complete reversal of policy,” Brouard said.
The second controversy revolves around the figure of Professor Didier Raoult, director of the Mediterranean Infection Foundation in Marseilles and author of a study on the benefits of hydroxychloroquine as an effective treatment for COVID-19.
While France’s top public health council decided in late May to halt the use of hydroxychloroquine on patients, Professor Raoult has continued to defend the efficacy of the treatment in the French media.
That confusion was further aggravated by The Lancet medical journal’s retraction of a major study on hydroxychloroquine after revelations that the study was based on faulty data.
As a result, a survey shows the French public currently has greater confidence in Professor Raoult than in France’s minister of health.
The public see “one prominent medical professor saying he has a good answer to the disease and the government doesn’t want to use it,” Dr. Brouard said.

One plan is to strip social media giants of their Section 230 legal immunity if they fact check content on their platforms.
Twitter and Facebook enjoy a special liability protection under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This immunity shields them from lawsuits if they were to remove and host content.

Trump to sign executive order on social-media companies on Thursday
- May 27, 2020 By Jon Swartz
'The other question I get is about autocallables and clearinghouses. This trade was about to pay off in March, and the central banks bailed them out. Which is their prerogative. But I think the thing I take away from that is that Central Banks read Zerohedge too. If it's in Zerohedge, then they have already devised a plan to stop if from happening. The irony of life is that the existence of Zerohedge make Zerohedge's existence unnecessary, in some sort of strange financial existentialist conundrum.'

Francois-Philippe Champagne said the revised $14 billion agreement — which for years has been a political flashpoint because of the desert kingdom's dismal human rights record — will allow the Liberal government to speak more freely about its terms.

"Here we have at least one part of the Canadian intelligence community that was doing early reporting. The question is, where did this reporting go? How seriously was it taken?"
The unit's reports certainly made it to the desk of Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jonathan Vance, and likely were given to Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan as well.

they did it
"To facilitate lending to small businesses via the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), the Federal Reserve will establish a facility to provide term financing backed by PPP loans, the Fed said in a brief statement. “Additional details will be announced this week.”
Effectively, the Fed will establish a secondary market for loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration’s Payroll Protection Program, and where the end buyer will be the Fed itself.
And so, what was supposed to be a no string attached rescue of America's small business, the PPP program has now mutated in yet another massive handout to the big banks, who will collect servicing costs ranging from 5% for small loans to 1% for larger ones, using Treasury capital (no origination risk) and then immediately selling these loans to the Fed if they turn sour (no balance sheet risk).

I am thinking that IF they are going to be "buying" payroll loans, it hints at expectation of longer lockdown, no so-called recovery or at best a wishi-washi recovery if n when it comes at all.
There also is emerging a pattern of creativity by the fiat peddlers in greasing the wheels of perpetuating loans and indebtedness; I guess anything is open season at trying to protect the financial system from seizing to a halt

Singapore Retail Investors Use Cheap Cash to Load Up on Stocks - BBRG
(Bloomberg) -- Record low interest rates are tempting some retail investors in Singapore to load up on debt to buy shares, just as the coronavirus outbreak creates the most volatile markets since the global financial crisis.
Earlier this year, 31-year-old insurance agent Heng Kai Sheng got advances on three separate credit cards to the tune of S$150,000 ($105,000). With the money, he opened a share-financing account at a local bank and pledged the lot as collateral. He was granted leverage of around 3.5 times, a S$500,000 kitty Heng’s plowing into the stock market.
“As Asians, our parents always tell us ‘Don’t borrow money, repay your mortgage as soon as possible’,” said Heng, whose initial S$170,000 share portfolio now totals about S$135,000. “But money is so cheap.” .../..

Melodramatic, but poor article.
However, the main theme is correct, of course:
If you watch world history you see the most empires, large systems, greedy business people have collapsed when corruption, avarice, spoiledness have gone wild
Rome collapsed under corruption...
Malcolm McLean collapsed believing oil will go to 150...
Most children of very rich people--turned to zeroes ...
The great Prophets of the Bible (Isiah, Amos,Jeremiah...) pontificate against excess corruption of judges and wealthy people...
Hitler died from the overdose of drugs Theodor Morell injected him several times a day...
OVER INDULGENCE NEVER added to the strength and sturdiness of a nation or any society.
We have reached a stage where the LUXURY industry (cruises, restaurants, lavish cosmetics, grandiose homes, clothes, cars, parties....) has become the largest part of our economy. It is also the LEAST crucial part of life--and therefore most fragile! On Maslow's hierarchy of needs---greed and avarice rate very low. This is why the whole economy came to a halt just because cruise industry failed.
Most likely it is mother Nature (whom it is NOT NICE to fool) saw it fit to correct this imbalance. Maybe, after the Corona, humanity will realize that modesty, unselfishness, introspection, are not so bad. That the blue bird is actually in our own backyard and that a Maserati is NOT the raison d'etre of life.
Nahhhh.

Corporate America on lockdown now conducts business on the Internet using aps. Zoom stock has taken off
______________________________________________________
The latest findings landed earlier today when Citizen Lab researchers said that some calls made in North America were routed through China — as were the encryption keys used to secure those calls. But as was noted this week, Zoom isn’t end-to-end encrypted at all, despite the company’s earlier claims, meaning that Zoom controls the encryption keys and can therefore access the contents of its customers’ calls.
