Maryland’s death toll from the new coronavirus jumped by more than 100 Wednesday, as the state included probable deaths from the virus in its daily announcement of new cases and victims for the first time.
Another 47 victims who were confirmed to have the virus were added to the state’s count, with an additional 64 probable deaths announced. In all, 413 Marylanders are reported to have died from the virus.
“A death is classified as probable if the person’s death certificate lists COVID19 as the cause of death, but it has not yet been confirmed by a laboratory test,” tweeted Kata D. Hall, Gov. Larry Hogan’s deputy communications director.
In a decision that is angering virtually all of his political opponents and even many of his supporters, who are bristling at the notion of a White House deliberately delaying badly needed checks, the Washington Post dropped a bombshell report last night when it revealed that the Treasury Department has ordered President Trump's name to be printed on stimulus checks as the IRS scrambles to send checks to every American who doesn't have direct deposit already enabled.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that 80 million Americans will have their stimulus checks in-hand by next Wednesday.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said earlier that mass gatherings in NYC might not return until September, meaning no concerts, shows or anything for the entire summer as the world fights off the novel coronavirus.
De Blasio, who just one month ago dismissed the virus as a minor concern, said the city is going to "take this slow and carefully to make sure we get it right." It also means that NYC's famous beaches will likely remain shuttered.

reported earlier that NYC's death toll soared past 10k earlier amid the largest jump in newly reported deaths by far. Offering an explanation, the NYT reported Tuesday that the increase was driven by the inclusion of a bunch of posthumous confirmations.

In one shot, the more than 3,700 people added to the rolls of the dead increased the US nationwide death toll by 17% to more than 26k.
The decision follows a report in the NYT that said deaths were being dramatically undercounted in NYC - which is a global epicenter of the outbreak - and in other cities and towns across the US.
With the new deaths, far more New Yorkers have died per capita now than in Italy.
Mayor de Blasio decided over the weekend to release the presumptive cases, according to the NYT, which cited 'private' sources close to the mayor.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown joined neighbor Gavin Newsom in laying out her plan to reopen her state, promising that it was based on a "science-driven process" with only three prerequisites (compared to Newsom's six).
They include: Slowed growth of virus cases, adequate personal protective equipment for health-care workers and first responders and increased testing, contact tracing and isolation.
"It will not be easy," Brown wrote. "It will take longer than we want."

1st step is to Open Up for Bidness. That's one reason I posted that NYC Death Stats link. If what is needed for the 'Open the F^(ker Up' side is data on who is actually dying OF WHAT, then here is a start for the argument that Healthy people, aided by sufficent PPEs can safely go to work again with out an outsized fear of dying. So it's def Not worth tanking the econ for 12-18 months while we wait for the Vaccine that may never materialize.
