Boris trying to save his face. that is all he is aiming currently.
as long as brits do not understand that there are certain area where eu can not give exeptions, until that moment there will be no follow through.
basic concept for EU in those talks is a common agreement in EU that if brits wanted out of EU then EU need to respect it.
And if brits want to sign new trade agreement IT CAN NOT BE SAME OR BETTER for brits as it was in EU if they were part of it.
so EU dont give up this mutually agreed principel and brtis need to undertsand it as otherwide EU will fall apart. Then itialns may want to leave, maybe spain or someone else.
there is no way country who is leaving can same or better trade deal.
so Boris must to decide who to suck his pride.

It was widely reported that barnier would be more belligerent and play hard ball negotiations.
From UK's point what would be wrong with the EU eventually flying apart ?

CB, the uk hasn't got much to trade on, but it has 70 million customers on tap. uk and us will do a deal regardless of brexit. which will be done. in the us folks think it will pass. brexit has already happened, its just what comes next that is on the table - uk has already left the eu, its currently in a transition period in terms of rules, which ends 31st dec this year. after that its wto or whatever has been agreed. but certainly no going back now unless they were to officially ask to rejoin. which means taking on the euro. and that kills the slightest of chances that exists.
