According to Bloomberg, real-estate data analytics firm Green Street released a new report outlining how the office space market in San Francisco will be the worst-preforming market in the US for 2021. Even though office vacancies in Manhattan are at record highs, it appears San Francisco tops New York City as companies reevaluating their space thanks to the pandemic.

Green Street estimates that rent and occupancy may plunge 22% in San Francisco this year, the largest expected decline of any other city in the country. New York was number two with -17%, Los Angeles in third at -9%.

The Biden team, Bloomberg says, is "increasingly worried the coronavirus pandemic is spiraling out of control - imperiling his promise to contain the outbreak - as cases and deaths mount, vaccinations lag and a more-transmissible strain emerges in the US."

The way the editors framed the issue, they made it sound as if any potential surge in cases later in the year - for whatever reason, even something totally unforeseen like more viral mutations (the other day, brazilian media warned of a new hyper-infectious strain emerging in the Amazon) - would be President Trump's fault, not Biden's and the Democrats.

Update (2018ET): Portland's KATU News says Portland Police are arresting protesters at the "J-20 march."

A group of violent demonstrators gathered in Southeast Portland on Wednesday afternoon, hours after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in at the US Capitol. The leftist anti-government group appeared displeased with the new administration as they attacked the building of the Democratic Party of Oregon.

Local news KGW reports the group of at least 100 people, dressed in all black, marched through Portland.

KGW's Mike Benner posted a series of tweets showing the chaos unfolding in Portland as there was "significant damage at the Democratic Party of Oregon bldg at 9th & Everett."

“But right now, with interest rates at historic lows, the smartest thing we can do is act big,” Yellen said. “I believe the benefits will far outweigh the costs, especially if we care about helping people who have been struggling for a very long time.” ...

Biden’s team released the plan ahead of his speech that was due to take place at 7:15 p.m. Eastern in Wilmington, Del. The address comes less than a week before he’s slated to be inaugurated as president, and a day after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a historic second time.

The plan calls for increasing direct payments to $2,000 from the $600 already hitting bank accounts, meaning stimulus checks of $1,400 would go out.

Options driven melt-up this time not in Tech but in the energy Sector.
As noted this week by ZeroHedge:

'Earlier this week, we showed why the energy sector in general, and the largest energy company in particular - Exxon - were set for a major melt up: simply said, the gamma melt up that dominated the tech space had shifted to energy stocks.

For those who don't, on Tuesday we asked readers if they recalled the "gamma squeeze" in various tech names amid the unprecedented Robinhood/SoftBank call buying frenzy from the summer/late 2020? Well, while SoftBank's market manipulation unit may have been "incapacitated" for the time being after suffering major losses, the record call buying has continued into 2021 as retail daytraders have put their $600 (and soon $2000) "stimmy" checks to "good" use. In fact, just last week we saw that 4th and 5th highest call volume days in history!'

Well, it wasn't, and in fact today's 30Y auction was one of the strongest ultra auctions in recent history.

The Bid to Cover was also quite impressive, rising from 2.33 in Dec to 2.45, the highest since October and above the six-auction average of 2.41.

The internals were also solid, with Indirects taking down 62.2%, virtually unchanged from last month, and also above the 61.2 recent average. More notably, Directs took down 17.8%, the most since December 2019, leaving Dealers holding just 20% of the take down.

2-year/10-year Treasury yield curve steepest since mid-2017
Published: Jan. 12, 2021 at 8:53 a.m. ET
By Sunny Oh

The U.S. yield curve continued to steepen amid fears of more fiscal stimulus under a Democratic-controlled Congress and growing questions whether the Federal Reserve may ease off its accommodative policy stance earlier than forecast. The spread between the 2-year TMUBMUSD02Y, 0.152% and the 10-year note TMUBMUSD02Y, 0.152%, a gauge of the yield curve's slope, stood at 1.02 percentage points, the widest since around May 2017. A steeper yield curve can reflect heightened growth and inflation expectations among bond traders. Some of the weakness in longer-dated Treasurys also reflected broker-dealers making room for new issuance this week, with an auction of $38 billion of 10-year notes due in the afternoon

Freezing Weather in Asia Sends Energy Prices Soaring, Catching Markets Off Guard
-- China’s coldest winter in decades meant state-owned energy giant Sinopec was desperate to unload heating fuel from a vessel headed to a northern port, yet freezing temperatures that have swept parts of Asia froze a thick sheet of ice and blocked access.

With the help of an icebreaker ship and a cannon loaded with hot water, workers spent 20 hours clearing a pathway for the tanker to dock and discharge its cargo of liquefied natural gas in Tianjin.

to wit: Janet Yellen, the incoming Treasury Secretary has picked as her chief of staff at the Treasury Didem Nisanci, an executive at Bloomberg LP.

Nisanci has been offered the job and accepted, Bloomberg itself reported.
Nisanci is currently global head of public policy for Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg .

If Yellen is confirmed as Treasury secretary, Nisanci will be one of her closest aides; her appointment won't require Senate confirmation.

Nisanci, 47, was chief of staff at the SEC under Barack Obama, where she was the lead adviser to Chairman Mary Schapiro on all issues involving the SEC, including policy, legislative, strategy, and communication matters.

Prior to the SEC, she was the lead adviser to Treasury Secretary Nominee Timothy Geithner after having been staff director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs subcommittee on Securities, Insurance and Investment.

The @nycHealthy site for signing up for a COVID vaccination is complex, burdensome, and buggy.

It will present an obstacle for too many people—particularly seniors—trying to sign up. This is a major problem.

Treasury Yields at 1% Fail to Excite Japanese Bond Investors
(Bloomberg) -- Japanese money managers are biding their time on Treasuries, waiting for the 10-year yield to advance further after it breached the key 1% threshold this week.

“Japanese investors will likely be prompted to buy more Treasuries when the yield rises to 1.3%,” according to Masahiko Loo, fixed-income portfolio manager at AllianceBernstein Japan. “Funds may be tip-toeing back after 10-year U.S. yields rose above 1%, but they expect more fiscal measures” to push yields higher.

While Japan is the largest foreign holder of U.S. sovereign bonds, its funds were selling Treasuries and buying higher-yielding debt in Australia and China last year. Debate over how far Treasury yields could climb is also dividing Wall Street, with some expecting it to edge up by just a few basis points while others call for an aggressive advance to 2%. .../..

(Bloomberg) -- Grayscale Investments LLC’s new chief executive officer says the world’s largest manager of digital assets expects increased interest from institutional investors such as pension funds and endowments to continue to fuel its rapid growth.

The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust has become a bellwether for digital asset investors after accumulating more than 3% of the total supply of the largest cryptocurrency.

“We’ve started to see participation not just from the hedge fund segment, which we’ve long seen participation from, but now it’s recently from other institutions, pensions and endowments,” Michael Sonnenshein, who was named successor to founder Barry Silbert on Thursday, said in an interview. “The sizes of allocations they are making are growing rapidly as well.”

Grayscale has 10 funds and currently manages $25 billion in assets, up from $2 billion a year ago, Sonnenshein said. The Bitcoin trust has seen the majority of the inflows amid a rally that pushed Bitcoin to $40,000 on Thursday for the first time.

Grayscale is planning to double its current staff of 24 employees, to continue to invest in advertising and to introduce half a dozen new products this year, Sonnenshein said. .../..

I can't speak for all brokers obviously, but here in the US I have NEVER seen a reputable broker who didn't honor stops. In fact, I believe that's a fast path to losing regulatory (NFA) approval here in the US. In the eyes of the NFA, traders are expected to protect themselves using stops, and brokers are expected to protect themselves by observing capital reserve requirements and having sufficient liquidity from upstream counterparties. Break this and it's your a**.

That's not to say there won't be slippage. I've seen it happen (even to me) and it's annoying. Nothing is perfect. But that's a far cry from not honoring stops.

Preventing margin calls is your job, not the broker's. That's why you use stops. You call the broker to get price quotes, put in new orders and update existing orders.

Regarding the original subject of Apple Maps...either Apple's servers failed or someone decided to be an a**hole and turn off Apple Maps service for DC...who knows. The lesson to be learned is that paper maps, a compass and navigation skills are still useful...even in the modern age. Soldiers and sailors are still taught the old ways, even if they don't always use them.

You gonna teach them how to place a trade with a broker using a landline phone too? And by phone i mean no digital, analog one.

Minneapolis DRS2  00:22:16 GMT - 01/06/2021
There are a lot of "old-fashioned" skills that you'd be surprised are not being taught to the young. Don't believe me? Try asking a 10-15 year old how to do these things that were once commonplace:

...Using a compass to turn and face North

...Locating common landmarks using a paper map

...Writing their name in cursive handwriting

...Reading the current time off an analog clock (hour/minute hand)

...Basic arithmetic (add/subtract/multiply/divide) without a calculator

...Finding the Big Dipper

...Recognizing common plants in their backyard and knowing which are edible

...Lighting a fire using kindling and a match

...Preparing a meal without electric appliances

...Recognizing simple machines and how to use them (lever, pulley, wheel+axle, inclined plane, wedge, screw)

Now remember that the people who do not know these things are teaching future generations.

fed can throw usd under a bus with more stimulus at its the reserve currency so will always have folks forced to buy it. us bonds, crude anyone? result will be stimulus at home for us base and higher earnings for international big corps from us. its a win all round for us, not so much for everyone else. u can expect the euopeans to start moaning about it above 1.25. the us will let them speak but will do nothing more than that to arrest the situation. if my solution is another guys problem then so be it.

How that affects the USD is anyone's guess at this point.

Minneapolis DRS2  09:14:24 GMT - 01/05/2021
If only it were that simple. Both the Republican and Democrat parties are hopelessly corrupt, so a simple binary analysis (D vs R, Up vs Down) is not enlightening.

Realistically, we have four possible paths going forward:

1. Democrats "win", big business (Biden's preference) has dominance...the Democrats control government, but big business (corporations, stock markets, etc.) exert dominant influence. This means low corporate taxes, high personal income and property taxes, laissez faire economic policy but draconian social policy.

2. Democrats "win", but social justice warriors (AOC, Elizabeth Warren, etc.) dominate. This is a wildcard...lots of politically correct BS, but at the same time lots of clamps on big business. Look for corporations, stocks, etc. to get f***ed.

3. Republicans "win", big business interests remain dominant. This is the status quo for much of the Republican party...same story as path #1. Low corporate taxes, high personal income and property taxes, laissez faire economic policy, "midrange" social policy.

4. Republicans "win", but Donald Trump remains dominant. In this path, Trumpism reigns supreme, no matter what the "establishment GOP" wants. In this path, "MAGA" is dominant, no matter what happens to everything else.

When considering these paths, remember that in the US, the financial markets are pretty much separated from the real economy. This was so even before Covid19, but is even more so now because of the lockdowns. If you want a trading prediction, look for absolutely NOTHING substantial to occur, at least within the US. Up, down, up, down, oscillating around a gently moving average of some kind, with volatility ever so slowly decreasing due to lack of real economic activity.
